I had a stapedectomy done on my right ear more than 40 years ago. I remember the surgeon waking me up in the middle of the procedure and asking me if I could hear and I could. After the surgery I couldn't hear in my right ear again and the surgeon told me it would be some time before I could. Several weeks went by and one day I was driving, with the radio turned up loud and like a bolt from the blue, all of the sudden, I could hear again in my right ear. Glad I had the surgery for sure.

A testimonial from years ago (I'm sure the surgical technique has improved greatly since then). I had the surgery done on my left ear, which was my best ear at the time It was great for a few months, then it failed after I had a fall and my left ear was then worse than my right. I'm now 51 and my hearing has gradually gotten worse. I don't think I would ever have the surgery again, because I would be afraid of losing what little hearing I have left. Hearing aids have their downsides, but they've worked great for me, and I've worn them since I was 15.

I had it done. It was suppose to be 98% effective, however the doctor dropped the prosthetic and damaged the rest of my hearing. Please know that there is always a risk. I am now deaf in one ear and have severe tinnitus.

I began noticing hearing loss in my 30s - 2004. By 2013 my hearing got so bad that I just couldn't hear people talking right at me me. So, in 2014 I finally got tested. I was diagnosed with otosclerosis. I was actually really worried I had something far worse - meniere's disease. But, it was just otosclerosis. They wanted to do surgery immediately - but, I didn't want that. I'm a musician. I need my ears. I just didn't trust surgery. Instead, I got hearing aids (I paid $7200 for them in 2014). Side note, only some hearing aids work for music.

I also wear hearing aids as well and have a mild to moderate hearing loss.. ive had a lot done with my ears, Ive had tubes and a tympanoplasty done and its soo worth it.. Didn't love the feeling of the anesthesia and I also had a bit difficult recovery but once it healed it was really worth it

Honestly my stap surgery in both ears was absolutely life changing, my whole entire life changed after getting my full ability hear back again. To me it was worth the risks, because I researched surgeons for weeks prior to scheduling

I have bilateral otosclerosis, so I underwent surgery on my right ear due to a 55% hearing loss. Unfortunately, the outcome was unsuccessful; I lost all hearing in my right ear and got tinnitus. Despite ongoing hospital visits, the cause remains unidentified.

I had a stapedectomy about 6 years ago in one ear and it didn’t work and made my tinnitus worse. That ear had since gone from mild to moderate loss and the other is almost caught up. I’m just now starting to work on getting my first set of hearing aids but there’s so many questions about them

Hi April 💗 congratulations about being over 6mths pregnant, have the doctors said what the chances are your baby will have a hearing loss? I have worn hearing aids for over 30 yrs & I am now on the profoundly deaf spectrum,as for the operation you said about I don't think I would have it,I am used to my hearing aids & as you said I could end up in a totally silent world or still need hearing aids..I am thinking about cochlear implants but here in the UK we would get one ear implanted for free & have a hearing aid in the other ear! But if I was young like you April with a baby on the way & if your hearing was as bad as mine then you may consider having the operation to hear your baby's voice or crying, but all the while hearing aids help then leave well alone incase you lose what hearing you have, for the past 4 yrs I have come to terms with wearing hearing aids & have pimped them up with coloured earmoulds etc! I want people to see them! I do think full shell coloured earmoulds like mine would suit you! Let people see your deaf! It's brilliant you have merchandise for sale! I have bought a journal of yours off Amazon! There is no right or wrong! Here in the UK hearing aids & batteries are free I don't know what you pay in Canada? You have I think you said had hearing aids for 8yrs so why would you change now? We all have days when we hate our hearing aids! I follow you on Instagram & we chat a fair bit,I find you easy to talk too so being selfish I would hate it if you got your hearing back as I think you can be more help to those that are thinking about getting hearing aids but are too scared to get them! So I would say in my humble opinion it's not worth the risk of losing what hearing you got or still may need hearing aids & having worse tinnitus is a big no no 💗💗

Thanks Barry, I always appreciate your comments and insights. There are lots of things to weigh out for sure. Right now the focus on the baby. They haven't said the likelihood of the baby having hearing loss but I do know my condition is genetic so you never know.

It will help with conductive hearing loss but not sensineural hearing loss. You should talk to an experienced Otologist surgeon ...NOT a regular ENT.
