No one should be suggesting that overbore suppressors are better, or even as good, all other factors being equal. The case for them is that they're "good enough", and that's completely subjective. I have a video on my channel shooting 7.62 Nagant through an Osprey 45. Theoretically, a fixed-barrel .32 suppressor would have been ideal, but does such a thing even exist? What I can say for sure is the 45's performance more than justified the $50 fixed barrel spacer purchase.

I agree to an extent. You made a good point about the diameter of the tube vs diameter of the bullet. I had never noticed that before. A .45 suppressor on a 9mm is obviously louder than a 9mm can on a 9mm. However, A .45 can on a 9mm is a hell of a lot quieter than no can on a 9mm. As someone who owns multiple guns in .45 caliber and in 9x19 it makes sense to go .45 first, followed by a 9mm can as finances allow.
@RealHankShill Жыл бұрын
I think a big part is .45 is inherently more suppressable than a 9mm, large and slow vs small and fast, the slow being the key word for suppression. So .45 cans get all the press talk and in a way it makes 9mm cans more specialized, especially if they cant be used on rifles. I think a lot of this has to do more with 9mm vs .45 acp than silencers. Its just in an attribute not heavily brought up until now

Great video! I bought the Hybrid 46 specifically so I can suppress everything I own with 1 purchase. And while I agree with the science behind this video, I can tell you from experience that the report differences between the 46 and a dedicated 9mm can on a 9mm handgun are marginal. Plus, the fact that suppressors are so far out of reach for a lot of people, I think multi-cal cans have a strong and prominent place in the suppressor market and definitely shouldn't be looked down on 👍

Originally when suppressors became legal in Michigan, I used the "if it fits it ships" mentality, and bought a .45 can (Osprey 45). Mainly because at the time the only gun I had with a threaded barrel was .45ACP and due to the expensive nature of cans. I've used it on sub calibers, but have found much better performance (at least by my ears) with using dedicated caliber specific 9mm and .30 cal cans.
@spartan74043 жыл бұрын
In defense of the 45 can, or overbore cans in general (like a 30 cal on a 6.5 or 5.56), I like the fact that I don’t have as much blow back, it doesn’t run my AR-10 as hard, rate of fire doesn’t go up and it’s not as loud on the port side vs. muzzle end. Those are more important to me than down range sound signature reduction, the supersonic crack is already predetermined by the round anyway.

Great video. I'm a gun guy and own a Sig Sauer SRD45 can that I'm pretty pleased with. I disagree that there are two categories of .45 ACP Can Purchasers. There's also a third category, people who use .45 as their dedicated pistol cartridge. My carry gun is a MR1911 in .45 and my wife's HD gun is a suppressed G21. I bought a dedicated .45 can because I am a dedicated .45 shooter. I might throw it on other pistols, like my 9mm, but it's for my .45s. That said, I don't disagree that purchasing a .45 can is not a great idea because it will fit anything and/or it's an inherently subsonic round. Buy a .45 suppressor if you intend on shooting .45 out of it, otherwise, buy for what you will predominately shoot, i.e. if you shoot 9mm, get a 9mm can.

Silencerco Hybrid .46, 45acp, 45-70, 458socom, as well as magnum pressure cartridges out of bolt actions like 338LM, I can change the end cap for small diameter bullets from a .308 or 6.5CM and even 5.56, albeit with only a couple decibel reduction from the original sized endcap, but still not being as quiet as a correct size can for the round. It also came with both the booster(without the piston) as well as a direct thread mount which are easy to swap out. It does have a large diameter that would obscure regular pistol sights, but I have suppressor hight sights that are just barely over the can that work good enough, and a red dot works too. It depends on your goal and expectations though doesn't it, it will still obscure location, reduce hearing damage, reduce flash, and remove concussive blast from firing a gun, it won't be nearly as quiet as a dedicated suppressor for the specific cartridge you are firing, so if you are trying to be ninja quiet, then pay ninja prices for a dedicated 22lr with sub ammo and suppressor, 9mm sub ammo and supressor, or 300blk sub ammo and suppressor. Some of us still like 45acp for full sized handguns and PCC's, so obviously we have to deal with the fact that it will be louder than 9mm.

All jokes aside I purchased a slincerco hybrid 46. I got this one because it is multi caliber so I could have one and be done. I was WRONG! It’s a great can but even with suppressor sights you can’t see over the can. The performance is quite good but my experience with cans is limited. I can and have used it on 556 as well. Since I no longer own any .45 cal it’s pointless to need it. Something else I didn’t think to check is can I service it, the answer is no. Also if you can only afford one its probably worth the increased usability to get slightly decreased performance. Also suppressors arent really suppose to make the gun quit its more so to project the sound away from your ears. And the most practical use for a suppressor in a tactical environment its actually flash suppression more so than sound suppression and with the sound reduction its not so useful being quit but just making it harder to tell the location of the sound. Basically its about hiding your position more so than being quit

Whats sad, it's still regulated and heavy 400 day wait on something this loud. A 45acp suppressor brings levels down from 160db to 140db. Its still as loud as a pneumatic construction tool. The bore on a 45 acp or 458 hybrid is over half inch! Tighter baffle to bore, like 223 and 300blk suppressors are more efficient, but 45acp has a smaller amount of powder and pressure, and expands reliably at subsonic speeds. My AAC tirant with 1911 is quieter than my 300 blackout, and much quieter than 223 suppressed. The 9mm in a 45acp does well, but gives up a few decibels over a dedicated silencer. My friend has a SiCo Hybrid and swaps it between hosts, and leaves the mounts on the rifles. It is a Large suppressor for pistols. The actual ID of that 1.37" OD can is closer to 1.25" and the .45 can is also longer on those Rugged models. Also even when shooting subsonic ammo a portion of the gas pushing the bullet out the bore moves faster than the bullet itself prior to exiting end-cap of silencer, the bullet only acts as a cork for about 60% of the gas (i.e why wipes are so effective), the rest of the gas moves faster than the subsonic bullet or around the allowed .05" to .06" overbore. The result is the greater the aperture even when tolerance is small to the caliber in question say .03" it will result in a loud can due to the large bore allowing that supersonic stream to exit. And finally a large caliber bullet interacts with atmospheric air much more even subsonic, imparting a compressive wave far larger than that of a say a .355 cal round like 9mm. Thank you for the video as always !
@FirearmEnthusiast3 жыл бұрын
Then explain why some 7.62 suppressors are noticeably quieter when firing 5.56 than dedicated 5.56 variants albeit all the reasons you just described. Not to mention rifle cartridges impart a significantly higher FPS when compared to handgun calibers (with exceptions in some loadings obviously) which would make shooting something like 5.56 out of a 7.62 silencer NOT hearing safe according to your above statement, except it is AND does a better job than the dedicated 5.56 silencer in some models when compared side by side. If what you described were fact then the data proving otherwise would be an impossibility, but that’s just not the case.

Yes a 9mm sub is quieter than a .45 but I can take the suppressor on an off without any adjustments. Also selection of sub ammo is limiting for specialty home defense rounds. So if you want to run a suppressor on your bedside pistol for example. Yes you can run super home defense rounds but indoors it might be loud enough to disorientate you Not to mention the logistical issue of needing 9mm sub as another type of ammo you have to store and keep track of and buy. @FirearmEnthusiast3 жыл бұрын
That was some sound science, but in my case I’m going to have to disagree. I own both the Obsidian .45 and 9. In the short configuration for the .45 suppressor shooting 9x19, it is actually quieter than shooting 9x19 out of the 9mm suppressor in the short configuration and ONLY a couple decibels louder than the 9mm suppressor in its full length configuration. When comparing the silencers side by side in their full length configuration, the .45 suppressor is only 3dB louder than the 9mm. What does this tell us. I have an infinitely more applicable and tactical overall length in the .45 suppressor when shooting 9mm as opposed to either configuration in the 9 suppressor. What I give up in a very minuscule amount of decibels I gain in the ability to suppress both calibers extremely effectively with very little loss, if any. Shooting both side by side in all configurations, I found that nor I, or the 5 other gentleman present at the range could note any discernible difference in dB rating to the naked ear. Another plus, while a bit of a stretch but not an impossibility, is you have a much lower, I want to say near impossible chance to have a baffle or end-cap strike when shooting 9mm out of the .45 suppressor. All it takes is one careless magazine or botched direct threading to mess up your silencer. Not that I have that problem though, the Griffin CAM-LOK QD system made direct threading on handguns obsolete. Long story short, I have the ability to suppress both calibers extremely effectively in each’s given configuration, while having a myriad of other pluses that in my opinion definitely outweigh the loss of decibels that I can count with 1 hand. I keep my Obsidian .45 in short configuration on a CAM-LOK dedicated to a 1911 chambered in 9x19 and it is DEAD quiet, but I can put it on any of my .45’s if I wanted to. My Obsidian 9 is affixed to a barrel spacer and is currently mounted on an EVO S1 where I don’t plan on removing it from. Take from this long exposé what you will, but this is my experience.

Goofy aerospace engineer here; what would happen if the aperture ratio to front face were the same, and the volume of each can was proportional to the caliber? My guess is whichever has a net lower pressure would sound quieter in that case. Means a heavier .45 can, yeah, but you'd have a much quieter .45, right?
@RichardCranium3213 жыл бұрын
That's not always the case tho, sometimes it's about how efficiently the gas flow is redirected and cooled regardless of pressures (for the most part) Think of it like this: you can Use the same fuel amounts in similarly sized rocket motors on the same payload but the shape of the nozzle along with the specific flow rates and dimensions of the convergence area where the gases expand in the nozzle - but each different flow rate of the nozzles causes variations in thrust and overall energy output that's sometimes visually observable through the number of mach/shock diamonds produced vs fuel consumed
@ExpatriotSilencers3 жыл бұрын
Low pressure is very difficult to suppress because the baffles don't "work" the gas hard enough. The gas flow tends to run down the bore in a laminar flow manner and bore asymmetries are needed to drive gas jets across the bore in order to disrupt that laminar flow down the bore. Low pressure makes this very difficult to accomplish. Suppressor volume and ratio of OD to bore size are really not the most important factors in sound reduction.
@kairu_aname3 жыл бұрын
Here's a thought. Most suppressors aren't actually for sound suppression. They're for flash suppression, they just so happen to suppress some sound as well.
@RichardCranium3213 жыл бұрын
@@kairu_aname the original patent mentions sound. I'm not sure where that info came from, but that effect can be achieved without a traditional suppressor... I believe it was the XM177 back in the early 60s that first used a long flash hider to help with dwell time for cycling the action of the shortened 10 & 11.5 inch systems of the XM177E1 & E2's... Now they have things like the Witt SME which doesn't actually quiet the sound, it just redirects the blast down range away from the shooter. Does a pretty good job of hiding the flash, too...

.45 has a big hole in the front which allows lots of expanding gas to escape. Early suppressor prototypes sometimes used material to close off the bore for this reason. These "wipes" significantly increased the efficacy of the device. 9mm is just small enough for this not to be a big issue. "Wipes" will help 9mm as well, just to a lesser degree.
@ExpatriotSilencers3 жыл бұрын
Really, the reason wipes were used was because baffle technology at the time was very primitive. Today we have much more efficient baffle designs. The only place a wipe is really of any advantage is when a very small suppressor is needed. FWIW wiped cans are AWFUL to shoot. Like really nasty because they spit crap back at the shooter's face.

Unless you’re shooting subsonic rounds all day, you still should be using ear pro with suppressors so a few db doesn’t matter that much to me, but to each their own and running any suppressor is better than none and it doesn’t matter if I’m the shooter or the bystander, everyone loves suppressors and especially people just starting that are gun shy.

I have over 10 years w suppressors. With a Silencerco Octane 45 HD in 45, there is subjectively no difference between 9mm and 45. Standard 9 is supersonic and the crack makes it seem louder than a 45. Subsonic 9 is the same as 45. These cans usually handle all 45 and under pistol rounds very well, including HOT 357 Mag and HOT 44 Mag from a 16" carbine barrel. The real surprise is how quiet 22 LR is from a 45 can. I mean subjectively as quiet as a dedicated 22 can because of the huge volume in the 45 can. It is amazing and the Obsidian and Octane are both break down cans with click together baffles for easy cleaning of the 22LR carbon deposits. Trust me beginners, get a 45 Obsidian or Octane as your FIRST can. You may never have to buy another...Unless you just want to. For cleaning, use CLR in an ultrasonic for 2-3 30 minute cycles of JUST the stainless steel baffles and piston. Do NOT ultrasound Aluminum parts. They will shine like new. Enjoy.

I use the 45 osprey for everything and to be honest, it works great with everything short of rifle rounds. 45 cal cans do not suck-just the mere fact that you can shoot all common pistol calibers through a 45 is a great benefit. 9mm sub sonic is quieter, but it’s also weaker so that makes sense. 45 cal cans are usually bigger and have more volume-all of my 45 cans are bigger than the dedicated 9mm cans. I can understand why performance diminishes when comparing cans of equal vol and width, but again all my 45 cans are bigger than their 9mm counterparts, so practically I see no reason to conclude that 45 sucks.

While a basic silencer is fairly easy to make, such a design will never rival nor exceed a properly designed commercial (US made) silencer. I agree with your objection to the "if it fits, it ships" argument. But there's 2 problems I have with your objection to the argument about sound reduction and sub sonic ammunition. Objection 1: Basically, a 9mm suppressor won't fit a .45 caliber gun, obviously. So if you have a .45 caliber gun, then a .45 caliber suppressor will suit you best. I don't see how .45 caliber suppressors can "suck" if being used on a .45 caliber gun. What would do better? Objection 2: It's not just about pure sound reduction, nor cost of ammo. The fact that .45ACP ammo is inherently subsonic also means that whatever .45ACP caliber gun you shoot will be designed to run properly with that subsonic ammo. Some guns have issues running heavier, lower velocity ammo than what is standard for their caliber. With a .45ACP this is much less of a consideration since every .45ACP is designed to run a subsonic load. So, there's less potential reliability issues. That means that with a suppressed .45ACP, to maximize sound suppression, all you're changing is the decibels. So there's no real concern about trying to run ammo that may not feed well in your particular firearm. Basically, suppressing .45ACP reduces the number of changed variables in order to maximize sound suppression, therefore better ensuring both maximal sound suppression and reliability.

9mm loses its Ballistic appeal when subsonic with exception to very few ammo choices. Subsonic Bullet effectiveness favors the bigger bullet. Sure a 9mm suppressed may be quieter but terminal performance just isn’t on par with the 45. As with most things in life…there is a trade off

It's amazing that you jumped through through all these hoops and yet you totally neglected to do the most basic test, a dB sound measurement test. FAcT is that a .45 supressor is quieter than a 9mm supressor. Also, shooting a 9mm in a .45 can is less than 3 dB louder than shooting a 9mm out of a 9mm can. I own the Obsidian 45 and I shoot my FNX 45 and M17 through it and both are pretty damn quiet.
