hard2hurt it’s not complete paranoia to think that your home could be invaded. A few years ago my brother had his (ex) wife and friends break into his house and steal everything, cut the phone wires, his his cellphone and stole everything, he didn’t have dishes to feed his kids in the morning. Needless to say that they got a divorce. And again after that when I was living with him a woman just randomly walked into his house and didn’t see me and when I confronted her she ran for the door, she parked around the corner and there were some more guys in the car. So it’s not all paranoia. I like this video however in Canada our laws protect the criminals more than the victims. If they were hurt we would have been charged

Best thing about body armor, you don't need to put it in a safe or have a lock on it. Nobody's ging to accidentally kill anybody with it when drunk or posting instagram badassery. That might actually make it better for home defense. Plus one or two of those bucklers. Boom! You're Iron Man.

I live in a small rural town of less than 100 people scattered around out in the country in the second most rural county in eastern Oregon (think high desert rural ranchers and cowboys). Last December a neighbor called me, she heard over her scanner radio that the Sheriff's deputies was chasing two guys who had stolen a rancher's pickup full of tools in the next county over and had come our way and crashed out in the snow about a mile up the road from our houses. This was about 11pm at night, snow on the ground, pitch black and as cold as can be. One perp was caught and the other was armed and on the run. All the deputies and State troopers who could get up our way locked down the area pretty much and went door to door telling people to lock up and stay armed because no one locks their doors out here. I remember grabbing my old antique 1911 I had from the 1940s which was missing the front sight, a shitty flashlight and a knife. (I really felt undergunned) but that's all I had for a defensive firearm besides my scoped 243 at the time. I turned on all my outside lights and was waiting just in case. The deputies setup around our homes and used FLIR to catch the guy who had taken off his coat and had hypothermia just 50 yards from my back door. He also had a pistol on him. That was the second time something crazy like that has happened in our small town since I have lived there all my life (25 years) and that's only two legged threats not counting dangerous animals. After that night I have wanted to get a kit setup just for bump in the night threats like that because I sure wished I was better armed and had better gear. That is why I'm currently watching videos and setting something up.

One saying I live by is (Never say Never) and (don't always say always) meaning never say that will never happen to me, like bad guys busting through your door, and don't always think you will always be ready, because one day you might drop your guard and that will be the day someone targets you. So always stay vigilant and always stay ready. I personally drill one or twice a week in my home just to keep my skills sharp and practice drawing my weapon unloaded of course. I live in a nice neighborhood, but I don't let that cross my mind that just because I live in a nice neighborhood now that something can't happen like a home invasion. I think having body armor is part of your battle ready gear. I rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it. Stay safe, stay vigilant, stay alert and always scan your surroundings, and try not to be sitting in a place where there is no exit. Try and keep a 6ft distance from people you don't know and don't drop your guard.

When my best friend (may he rest in peace) got back from Kandahar after serving there in the 75th, he told me about one of the NCOs (forget what grade) who was a SAW gunner but insisted on having 1-2 rifle mag pouches front and center on his plate carrier. When one of the Tac-Spec-Fours finally worked up the courage to ask him why, the NCO grinned and lifted the velcro, reaching into one of the pouches. "Extra snacks, bro!" he said while pulling out a Slim Jim and an Almond Joy or some shit before marching off happily.

Nah it's just a different kind of force, knives cut single strands and because of that penetrate a lot deeper. Higher end (and usually thicker) soft armours are usually resistant to both but it's better to check it in advance. Fun fact: broadhead arrows work great too. Oh, plastic cutting boards are amazing against knives so if that's your main concern just turn your vest into a brigandine xD

I used a safelife defense vest for years doing security work and the panels held up great. I did go though 2-3 carriers that just wore out over time. These were the concealed carriers that were made of lighter material than the "tactical" carrier as presented in this video. They replaced it every time at no charge and no questions asked; just pictures of the wear and tear and good to go. This was also wearing it for anywhere from 36-70 hours a week for 4 years in varying degrees of physical activity.

Pistol rated vests stop bullets and not knives because they are made up of a fabric grid like a net. Pistol bullets are big blunt things that can't get through the net, but a knife is a pointy thing that will go through the hole of the net like a needle and thread. A comparison is like a towel can stop a 50lb kettle bell falling from 3 feet from going through it, but a needle and thread can punch right through it with little compared energy.

Working security I had a budy who was a big ass body builder he walked over to an unruly drunk guy who also happened to be tweaking, paranoid and already wanted by the law. My friend is hw sized 250 plus unruly drunk guy was prob 5’6 145 lbs. drunk guy produced a small pocket knife stabbed my friend once in the chest the one more time in the lower abdominal and pulled up slicing his stomach open to the point you could see entrails. My friend went feint in less then a min drunk guy ran has not been caught to this day. My friend got immediate first aid and the paramedics arrived in less then 10 mins. His heart stoped 5 times but he went into emergency surgery and lived. But need a colophymy bag to use the restroom for months. I have another friend who I actually coached Gracie jiujitsu to when he was a youth who then became a nationally ranked elite judoka. He sold a young man 40 dollars worth of pot the young man wanted more drugs and more money so he stabbed my friend an elite judoka and jiujitsu black belt by surprise to take what he had this friend did not receive the same immediate treatment and died before help came. In one case a small untrained unfit criminal almost killed a security professional 6 inches taller and 100lb heavier with some martial arts training. Second case an average unfit younger man with bad intent was able to kill an elite martial artist. Both with mans most basic tool a common house hold knife and not a huge buthcher knife either like a Walmart or gas station knife. In both cases they could have faught unarmed 1000x and there would be no way the criminal to win but with a knife it’s over. How could you think a knife is not a good defense weapon. I would rather have a gun but my county does not give ccw licenses period. Maybe some exceptions have been made but you would need to be like a high value politician with death threats maybe. Our only legal form of protection that could end a fight against someone armed with a weapon or a fight you can’t win is a knife. We have oc spray but I have seen it be pretty ineffective in certain people especially when those people are on certain drugs same with the tazer I have seen them have no effect I’ve seen them malfunction I’ve seen them miss I’ve seen people fall on the floor and stop drop and roll kind of motion get the prongs outs then produce a real weapon. I myself let my gf pepper spray me with oc spray in the mouth nose eyes and ears and I was totally unmotivated not angry totally sober and I was able to take 4 quick steps forward and deliver 12 stabs with a practice knife before I even really noticed my eyes burning not something I’m willing to risk my life with. Even after that it was hard to keep my eyes open and alert at all times put I was just pretty much uncomfortable for the rest of the night. I am a pro hw mma fighter and a security professional I have been training for 16 years and I have a hand to hand advantage over most people on this planet I refuse to engage with anyone who has a knife period unless I have a gun or a knife 3x as long haha in interest to hear a better alternative and why you don’t think they are good for self defense.

Man, call me paranoid. Really, it's okay, I kinda am. I want a vest like that and a .45 or nine. I have been robbed in my own home in the past and been through violence a few times too many, so in my home, I'd like to have a vest like that and a good pistol. Unfortunately I live in a country where this is hard to obtain, especially with minor crimes on record. I think that if I had violent crimes on record I would understand why it's a no-go, but otherwise, I wish I was able to protect my own home. Our laws in Norway are confusing about self defence when it comes to firearms. From what I get, you are allowed to answer with firepower if the person who breaks in or what ever is a life threatening danger, but you are not allowed to have guns and ammo stored in the same cabinets. So if it comes down to it, you will be labelled a criminal even if it was to protect your own life. However, that is a pill worth swallowing if it comes down it it. Sorry if my facts are off, but I do believe this is how it is in Norway.

As far as home defense I’ve always taught unexperienced people do use something as simple as the title rolled up newspaper or magazine we can always be found throughout the house or a cut off straw broomWhere are you put screws and washers to add weight and sharp edges to the end. This way you can use a straw part of this broom to to distract or even harm the eyes of your attacker and the other end do actually damage him or her. A tightly rolled up newspaper or magazine with a few short lessons can be found anywhere in the house and just as strong as a small stick used properly will give you a fighting chance. I would never tell anybody to use a knife as it can be taken away from you. I would never suggest anybody in not experience to use a firearmAs we all know if you’ve never pulled the trigger before there may be a whole lot of hesitation may be hard to get to in time.

9:52 - I'm actually getting emotional over how well you are doing at the impossible task of letting people know they may be more likely to have to defend themselves without engendering fear and paranoia. I'm only seeing this video now, but I was living in Portland at the time you put this out. We had had 100 straight nights of riots at this point, and rioters had gone from governmental buildings into the neighborhoods attacking people in their homes, blinding with lasers and so on. The Mayor had gone out to stand in solidarity with the rioters, only to get attacked and later have his condo building barricaded and set on fire. The District Attorney was refusing to prosecute rioters. The State Police had pulled out and refused to support further because of the DA's refusal to prosecute. The Governor refused federal law enforcement support and condemned the LEOs protecting federal government locations like the Courthouse. It is wise to prepare to defend yourself and your community because there have been recent examples of no one coming to help and the government supporting the people coming to hurt you.

@@_db612 My first issued vest in the army was two sizes too big for me, the plate went all the way down to my belt line. Any time I sat down or went to the kneeling position, my legs would hit the bottom of the plate and jab the top of the plate into my jaw. Any time I had to go prone I had to be really careful or the bottom of the plate would hit the ground first and the top would hit in me in the face with the full force of my dive. A vest is not meant to stop you from getting hurt, it's just meant to keep you from instantly dying so you can get medical help. There are only a couple of places below your belly button that will result in rapid death if shot. But that's why a vest isn't going to help you as much as you think unless you have some emergency medical training and equipment as well.

@@_db612 Body armor isn't made to protect you entirely, or make you untouchable. It's made to keep you fighting as long as possible. Which is why it covers your lungs and heart mainly. If you get shot in the stomach its going to suck and without medical you will eventually probably die. However, not as fast as taking a bullet to the lungs or heart. They do sell additional add ons such as shoulder and or groin/lower covers. Things like that. But you'd have to carry all that and move with it. Which is easier said than done. Unless you're swat then you'd probably never be rigged up like that. Even they have shields in addition to all that. That and the easiest part to hit is center mass, which is why cops are trained to shoot center mass. Less room for error. You cover that you not only protect vitals critical to continuing life, but also removing the largest target from being available. The ideal situation would be never to be shot at all really. I thought the same at first.

I called 911 and put them on speaker, tossed the dogs in the closet, racked the bolt, and readied myself to fight as I tracked the dude trying to break into my house as he set off exterior motion lights at each window. He gave up, I unloaded my ruger after the cops arrived and didn’t sleep at all the next few days.

I'm not sure if I would reccomend everyone have body armor, but if you do have body armor you should get at least level 3, if not 3+. If you're in a situation where you might need body armor, you have to assume you might be getting shot with a rifle, and not just a pistol. Additionally, I don't know what 3a+ is. Generally, my understanding is that it goes 3a, 3, 3+.

I bought a vest from the same company back when the lockdowns first started back in March. Seems to be high quality. I can only compare it to the 40 pound ceramic flak jackets they gave us in the middle east. It won't stop a rifle like that one can, but I'm hoping it never needs to, and it's much, much lighter. I figured there ratio of idiots to sane people was too low for the lockdowns to be effective, and that the virus would continue to spread, and thus the lockdowns would last intolerably long for most people, leading to a breakdown in society. I was sort of right. Fortunately, I never needed it, but it's nice to have. On a side note, I wonder why they never provide protection for the sides of the upper arms. I know of someone who was killed while wearing a bullet proof vest because he was shot from the side. The bullet went through his arm, then through the armhole in the side of the vest and into his torso.

Super late to the party, but David Guyton has actually made (and shows how he made) a modern ballistic spauldur for this very reason. I think most of the negative crticism comes from people who seem to think its meant to be used by itself. I think it works quite well in conjunction with other armor systems, and would compliment other ballistic items such as a shield quite well. You and mike should check it out, would love to know your thoughts. Along this note, seems some HEMA folks have taken to strapping a small heater shield shaped pad to their bicep on their lead side which seems surprisingly effective, maybe in modern times could be integrated into something that looks like a backpack that maybe you could conceal your weapon or med kit in. Either way, Id love to hear mikes thoughts on the concept in a modern self defence scenario, i think theres wisdom to some of the best armor is armor people dont even realize you are wearing. Even a plate in a backpack is effective, flip it around, pull the straps tight, and now you have torso protection you can raise/move for cover if needed.
@NeutroniummAlchemist

The answer to everyone that lives a defensive lifestyle, to the people that is expected to go check out that "what was that?" noise, the person that's expected to go to the front door when multiple voices are banging on it, is YES. If you have offensive tools, you need defensive tools. Embrace the new "minute man". Stage your gear where you can get into MOST of what you need in 60 seconds. Embrace it. Insist upon it in your household. Armor up. Tool up. Gun up. Be harder to hurt and harder to kill. Armor up.

As a former EMT, I can say that yes, in some areas you might feel the need. We are not the wild west or anything, but... there are some rough areas in some parts of some towns and some people don't differentiate between police and EMT. Additionally, some EMT's are also cross trained and have to work in law enforcement capacities. If I had one of those jobs I would just wear a concealable vest or have a secondary carrier. I personally think this is a TERRIBLE idea (separation of duties and all) but again, the reality of the US 'market'.

The problem with body armor is it does have a shelf life. Kevlar, spectra, etc degrades over time. Ceramics don't really degrade but they are super brittle. Steel is good but heavy. The titanium I have seen for "body armor" way to thin to do actually be effective because titanium is very brittle. Mike I get it with how much better the body armor is. I was wearing 30 pounds in just armor for my vest back in Iraq 04.

But honestly who has time to put a vest on when your door has just been kicked down. It takes me a good 60 seconds to get it on, those 60 seconds could have lost you positioning time. So is it better to maintain optimal positioning or optimal armour. Because if they give me a lot of time, I can get bullet proof helmet on, vest, elbow pads, riot shin guards. metal filled cut resistant level 5 gloves, ball cup and riot shield in hand lol. But who has time to equip all of that. I don't sleep with body armour on.
