Think it is pretty hard to answer these questions. Like you mentioned these are different at different universities and even in different countries to some degree but I like that you guys are helping others. For those in the US, we follow ABET accreditation which is a non-profit Engineer/government organization that sets out guidelines based on outcomes so theoretically any accredited Engineering university here in the US will produce a similarly capable Bachelor of Engineering student with the same capacities and outcomes (I think the real difference between universites is when it gets to "prestigious" universities like Ivy Leagues that want to weed people who aren't serious out in order to maintain their status quo, and/or have more industry connections so you're guaranteed a higher paying job when you graduate and a support network for those who make it through, etc). Typically after a Bachelors in Engineering it's required you are in your field working alongside/under Practicing Engineers for a couple of years before you are allowed to take the PE exam. This is like "the bar" for lawyers and is a very tough exam that many fail on several tries. Once this is passed, you are officially a "Practicing Engineer" and have signing abilities on documents among other things (but this depends of course). As far as hard classes though, I'm a Civil Engineering student and follow some of the same ME classes up to a point, I would say they are all tough with low class averages in some courses (one of my classes right now has a class average of 76% and that's out of 50 students). Some of the second year classes are very tough, classes we call Statics, and Dynamics, and Strength of Materials (or Material Science). In the 3rd year comes the CE courses and of those what you guys are calling Fluids I think is what we call Hydraulics and it's geared toward CEs and water management systems. Those along with others are very tough like you mentioned. Another I can think of in 3rd year is Pre-stressed Concrete, a very CE core class but you'd be amazed how difficult of a course that is when you start combining so many unknown factors into a problem. It seems to me from my experience that the 2nd year classes like Physics, Statics, Dynamics, Material Science really hit you hard and really push people, you either stick it out or people decide they hate Engineering lol. From there you get into the very focused and hard classes in 3rd year that are more about your discipline but also very indepth and very hard. One last thing I think is pretty cool, you both are ME Masters students. From the industries I've met and from friends and others who are MEs, that's a rare thing. Most MEs I have come across stop after a Bachelors degree, and many go behind a computer or work as a team with other Engineers. For example I know more than a few who build designs for companies based on their PhD Physicist, PhD Chemists, or work with factory floor workings maintaining part specs. And example of this would be working for Boeing or working for Intel. The Civil world is a bit different because you more often than not come out with a Bachelors degree which is just the background knowledge to follow up with a Masters in the focus area that interests you most. As an example there, it's difficult to design roads or bridges or buildings without having the Masters degree to understand earthquake design or design things that are used everyday in a city where people's lives are on the line. Thanks for the video!

I thought I did comparatively well GPA-wise but I think I benefited from smaller class sizes. Hardest class for me might’ve been Heat Transfer. As far as internships go, they are absolutely necessary, especially if you’re trying to find a job in the engineering field after graduation. As mentioned in the video, your GPA doesn’t mean nearly as much as your involvement, so please get as involved as you can.

From my experience from the Technical University of Delft in BSc ME, people would often most struggle in signals analysis. Some have to extend their bachelor's by an additional year to still complete that one subject. Funny related side story: When a friend and I were doing that subject in second year. He would be doing aerospace master subjects as: CFD 1, 2, 3, 4, viscous flows and a couple others for fun. Don't ask why, he just enjoyed numerical analysis. He would pass all his AE master courses, but fail one course, it was signals analysis. Also advanced dynamics is quite a tough one, but as easy as linear algebra 1 in comparison to signals analysis.

Hi, I just "discovered" these videos, and they are amazing, good work. Since you've done your Bachelor (Undergrad) in Canada where Universities have a curve-based grading system, how does ETH's grading system compare to that? and what are the exams at ETH like, I mean oral and written exams? I've never actually taken an oral exam, and would really like to know more about them and exams in general. Thank you.
@RiverTechJess6 жыл бұрын
Hey Tarabas! What do you mean by "curved-based" grading system? Because I would say that the grading system at ETH is way more curved based than in canada. I think it's way harder to get good grades at ETH, but it's not because the material is hard (although it is) it's because your grades depends on the class performance. There are both oral and written exams here. Maybe I should be a video about those
@unknown31586 жыл бұрын
I think you should make a video about it (Thanks in advance). And the curve-based system is basically your grades depend on the class performance (i.e. Top 10% - A, the next top 10% B and so on). I actually always found this system better than a catalog one (i.e. you get A only if you score 90+ overall or sth like that), and easier.

At my university Thermodynamics 2 is higher level than Thermodynamics 1. It´s because Thermo 2 (Applied Thermodynamics) you may have an exam with complex and large problems, example, you may have a Combine Power Plant (Rankine and Brayton Cicle) with overheating and regeneration, and be asked for the combustion process in the boiler too. Other example problem is the mixing of real several gases, and you have to apply chemical equilibrium in several processes in the mixture, and do several iterative calculus. Difficulty is for the large and iterative calculus you have to do, it takes you alot of time.

Kevin Pierre Hello Kevin, If you transfer from foreign countries to USA or Canada for engineering schools, you will be accepted and most of the case, start from fresh year, which means you need to begin with first year math. Because many engineering schools do not recognize previous credits from foreign universities. (as far as I know, some Canadian universities do not accept transfer students during undergrad studies. You may need to go the school’s website and make sure that the school you apply accept transfer student.) Hope this would help you.

Depends, the math in chemical IMO is actually a tad easier, other than the extension they have of thermo, but there’s no mechanical dynamics, and machine dynamics. But chemical you have the added chemistry, which can throw people off, and also takes extra time to remember. So overall I would say it’s a little harder, but personally remembering shit is my forte, so I find mechanical harder. But the General public will say Chem is a little harder.

Ahh everywhere I have been it is different. It doesn’t really matter what kind of engineering you have but mainly your specialization. But interesting to see how it is at your school. Where do you study?

Everyone has good grades today? Join mechanical engineering in Germany. You will be happy to pass somehow most classes.
@danielwinata7266 жыл бұрын
Fr Gr what do you mean??
@advocatusdiaboli32046 жыл бұрын
Daniel Winata The failure quota for every single class is around 80 %. That only included the students that have registered to write the exam. I can tell you an example when we started the first year we have been 600 students. We had to pass 6 classes the first semester. Many didn't even register to all 6 only to 2 or 3, because they couldn't keep up with all 6 classes. So for technical mechanics only 200 registered to take the exams. That are 33,33% of the whole freshmen. Only 20% of the 33.33% passes the class and that was only barely with a little more than 50% as a grade. So you can imagine only 6.6% passed the class on time at the first try. Writing passing exams at first try is not meant to be. At the second or third try it is possible.

At which University do you study?? I'm also planning to go to Germany this year.
@advocatusdiaboli32046 жыл бұрын
Daniel Winata RWTH Aachen. But you can trust me, it looks like this at every university in Germany, if you go into engineering, computer science or study any other STEM subject. What I expirienced is that foreign students have it even harder, because nobody cares about English as teaching language everything is in German.

Sorry, I should’ve said that good grades aren’t impressive. But yes, I agree it’s really difficult to get good grades here in Switzerland (I’m assuming the education is much similar to Germany than Canada)

Mechanical engineering is not so hard but some subject is very tough like thermodynamic and som. I want to know what was your final year project..
@RiverTechJess5 жыл бұрын
I think it’s hard in the sense that there’s a lot going on
@sciencefactbyrkali44085 жыл бұрын
What about your project.. I am asking because I am also in 3rd year .M.E.
@xxtravisxxify5 жыл бұрын
Well, I can easily tell that ME is one of the hardest studies at University but if you really into it and basically love it, it's a gift to you and you can make money with it and you have absolutely no limit of possible income and the working position, of course it depends how you work hard and have developed yourself. And most importantly you need discipline like for everything in life but just a little bit more.

my concepts are strong but I am not good with softwares like ansys, matlab what should I do?
@RiverTechJess6 жыл бұрын
I think the best thing to do is practice. There are definitely jobs out there where you don't need ansys and matlab, but becoming more comfortable with these softwares will only benefit you:)

If Thermo is hard, you're not making enough assumptions.
@RiverTechJess6 жыл бұрын
Very interesting viewpoint. But a very famous physicist once said that if you think you understand Thermo, then you actually don’t understand it at all;)
