Gotta commend these guys on their nerves of steel. Hitting water at that speed with improper entry position would be devastating. My main question would be, how do they safely practice complex spin and twist sequences like that and survive until they get it right?

@jeremybong7238 5 жыл бұрын
BrianM Grim Yup, same question on my mind.
@KetziaArcherion
@KetziaArcherion 5 жыл бұрын
BrianM Grim about 60% of a divers training is called dry diving. They practice their dives going into foam pits and on crash mats. Or they're hooked up to suspension cables and their coach helps them get the form going into the water until they feel confident enough to do themselves.

The big thing in diving is the preparation of the landing area. Notice in all diving event they have a water spray constantly hitting the water at entry. This is done to break up the surface tension and allow them to do these dives without it being like hitting concrete. That said, even though I know the physics behind it. I still could not do what these guys and girls do. Balls the size of coconuts on all of them.

I felt queasy just watching these men standing by the edge. Then I thought of Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo, explaining his fear and physical and mental/emotional reaction can be overcome by incrementally working his way up to the higher positions, desensitizing himself little by little. I'm sure these guys used a similar principle over many years. Adding 5 or 10 feet at a time is nothing; gradually reaching a couple hundred feet. Not saying I would/could do it myself, but I'm sure one can gradually increase one's high-diving capacity this way.

There is no doubt that these guys have practiced a lot before diving 80' down. I used to do some high-diving but not THAT high! We practiced our twists, somersaults, flips, etc. on a trampoline with spotters before going off a platform, which was only 10 meters. You can get hurt going off a 3 meter board or even one that is only 1 meter is you don't learn correctly. Belly flops from great heights always constitute a risk of a ruptured spleen, broken ribs that can puncture lungs, even a bruised heart and bruising of other organs such as the pancreas and liver. So it is paramount to learn low first and be very careful! And you cannot properly judge distance from water without a spray on it, which really helps a lot, plus it can break up the surface tension a bit.
