It's kind of annoying that they brought back the whole "little armor guys are actually just points" thing from the original game. They replaced it with money bags for the entire rest of the series and that made way more sense, and you would confuse them for armor upgrades.

Notice how when he first started it seemed pretty easy for him to reach the red demon boss. Then something he was playing around with gradually got more difficult to the point where its almost unattainable and just getting to the boss again takes more initial skill.
