In the show, the outbreak began in 2003 when George W. Bush was President (as we saw in Episode 1), which means gay marriage wasn't legal nationwide yet. So, theoretically 1 additional reason why Bill & Frank chose to live on their own instead of in the Boston QZ was because they were a gay couple & they might have been discriminated against for that.

In the game Bill serves the purpose of showing Joel what he will become if he keeps on the path of shutting people out. In the show he does the opposite. He shows Joel what he can be if you lets someone in.

Bill and Frank won the apocalypse. They had a more beautiful life after the world ended than many people get to have today. As heart wrenching as their story is, what really gets me is Frank painting when Bill was watering the plants. His motor function has deteriorated and he was frustrated trying to paint. Then I realized the moment Frank decided he was ready to die was when he could no longer paint Bill.

Frank's line about "Older means we're still here" hits harder when you realize that, since the show sets the story 10 years earlier then the game does, Bill & Frank here were two gay men who came of age at the start of the AIDS pandemic. (No wonder '80s music meant "trouble" in their radio code.) Yet they survived, and met, and grew old together.

If you notice how they first show the table when Frank sits down for his first meal, it shows half the table because Bill is still closed off and the music is tense. They recreate that scene, but the music is peaceful and calm and they have both of them in the scene through the door to show that they’re now one unit. Beautifully done.

Sorry. I honestly believe that others who force the individual who is suffering to stay alive (at any cost) are wrong to impose their beliefs on others. We are at a point scientifically we can help people live longer but at what cost and what quality of life? Breaking 92 year old grandmas ribs and puncturing a lung to do CPR then hooking her up to life support is not happening for her and is torture. People with catastrophic injuries or illness should be given an option to go out on their own terms. Right now we have hospices allowed to “encourage” death through dehydration and starvation. But not allowed to peacefully take an OD. How cruel is that? It’s absurd refusing a dying person food and drink is legal.

"[Episode director] Peter Hoar did his director's cut with our editor, Tim Good, which was quite long," Mazin explained. "When they sent it to me, I think it was almost two hours or something like that. So, I was like, oh, that's probably not good. "And I sat down, but I'm like, 'OK, I'll watch the two-hour version of this episode.' And I cried so hard that at one point, I actually said out loud, 'Ow.' "I mean, it hurt. I cried so hard it hurt. And I thought, 'Well, if these guys can do this to me and I wrote this fucking thing, then I think it might work pretty well on other people'." Neil would always say, 'We can change anything, but we need to talk about why. And if there's not a good reason - if we can't do better - let's deliver what we have.'" I'm pretty sure they did better here in this episode with all the changes.

Thank you for sharing your experience with this episode. Between watching, rewatching, and reaction videos I don't know how many times I've seen it. Most of us know it beat by beat now, yet like a great song or master painting it never loses its power. We simply marvel at how perfect it is. It's a beautiful poem. It's a testament. It's a master class in writing, performance, direction, music, editing, and adaptation. THIS is how you adapt content between media. The Bill and Ellie dynamic between Earl and Ashley will always exist in the game. But Bill's town is largely an extension of the tutorial, still getting the player into the mechanics. The neighborhood, high school, and truck scene made for amazing gameplay. Story-wise, though, the most compelling part of Bill's Town was finding Frank and the implied backstory. The intent of the section is that Joel and Ellie need a car and provisions. The outcome in the episode is the same. Taking this detour into Bill and Frank's lives was a brilliant stroke of storytelling to get us there.

I mean, considering he was a closeted gay prepper in a tiny US town, I would assume he didn't talk much to anyone even before shit went down, except for maybe his mother until she died. In the game he stayed this way, despite Frank, which eventually drove Frank away and to his death, but Bill was still alive. In the show he learned to change and open up ever so slightly, which got him supplies to fix the fence, advice to reinforce the fence, which protected them against the raiders, he got meds to treat his wound and Frank's disease and a few luxuries, as well as the love of his life and so much joy until his old age that he didn't even want to go back to his old ways, because Frank basically taught him how to live and not just survive. It's also interesting how long Tess & Joel knew each other, as this was not really covered within the game either. And Joel also could not call her a girlfriend, even though he almost did. I'm also glad to just see her again, as I love Anna Torv, knowing her from Fringe, and Tess generally comes a bit short in the story. She originally was planned to have a little backstory too, where she kills her infected husband but can't do the same for her kid, which she ends up locking in a room, but it was cut for time & budget reasons. In the game Bill was kinda there to show Joel how he would possibly end up if he kept closing himself off, like a warning. In the show Bill showed Joel what he could be if he opened himself up again. It's a beautiful display of how opening up and love can be scary, but also how much we can benefit from it if we find someone who truly loves us back.

Yup. If both Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett aren't nominated for an Emmy Award (Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series), and if Offerman doesn't win it, there's something _seriously_ wrong with the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences voters. It's almost like this episode was produced in a way to guarantee that Nick FINALLY won an Emmy (long overdue, the man's a creative genius) - in a series that is marked by an insane attention to detail, this episode in particular really shines (I heard that Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin figured that if they grabbed people's attention by episode 3, they knew they had them for the rest of the show). And apparently it wasn't even Offerman, but his wife (actress Megan Mullally) who read the script and told him that he NEEDS to do "Long, Long Time." A lesson for us all - listen to your partner, they sometimes can see what we can't.

This episode is really special for so many reasons. The writing is so superb and yet there's zero fat on it. Every word exists for a reason to inform the viewer on some level. The reason Bill mentions leaving the window open explains why the front door closed just before Joel opened the bedroom door. Bill's letter saying (paraphrase) "God help anyone who stands in our way from protecting the ones we love" -- we know what that will eventually mean for Joel. Bills line of "I'm old. I'm satisfied. And you were my purpose." As an "empty nest" father of two, who are now adults writing the new chapters in their lives - one serving in the USAF, and the other graduating college. I felt that deeply.

The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous. Dolls, children, children with dolls, dolls that look like children, all manner of seemingly harmless and familiar things, all trying to kill you. We expect that any kindness will be answered with violence, that any trust met with betrayal. We as an audience have been primed to fear the most faithful of friends, the most reliable family members - especially in this particular genre of horror - and when we encounter a story about caring and commitment amongst the ruins of a dying world, we don't know how to process it and it hits hard. "I was not expecting this" seems to be the most common refrain, with good reason. This is ostensibly a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a kindred soul to a mortal threat in an instant and no one is to be trusted, especially other humans. Yet this particular tale is about trust, and love, both matrimonial and romantic. It's about allowing oneself to be vulnerable and in that vulnerability, finding those moments of existence that are both ephemeral and priceless. We expect a calamity, a personal buskin beyond the destruction of our civilization. We anticipate a type of misfortune that doesn't occur. During the worst catastrophe in the history of human kind, we bear witness the best thing to ever happen to these two humans, and it's profound; jarring. We await a devastation that never comes to pass; that expectation of tragedy is subverted by a story of love. We expect blood and destruction; what we get is a masterpiece about small, beautiful lives lived less ordinary. This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion, and it's based on a video game; we've come a long way from Pong.

while i'm glad that the show stayed mostly faithful to the story of the game i am really glad they made this one change. it's both deeper and more beautiful than what we got in the game. and i love how bill was somehow living his best life after everything with the rest of the world went to shit.

Been looking forward to your reaction as you are one of the few reactors I've seen who has actually played the game. I was stunned by this episode and the way they not only rewrote Bill's story, but turned it completely on its head as a warning to Joel. The Bill from the game was where Joel was heading: isolated, angry, and completely without human contact until he died alone. Instead, Bill lived a full, contented life and was able to pass on to Joel his wisdom: that being the protector was still well worth it, despite the loss. This was simply the best television I think I've ever seen. I was floored by its depth, poetry, and perfection. I'm curious what kind of awards it will win down the road.

The best television you have ever seen? Really? This episode was filled with plot contrivances. Bill and Franks relationship was incredibly forced. I mean you mean to tell me that after the outbreak Bill has been totally alone for years. He hasn't come across a single person, and the first person he meets after years of being alone just so happens to be another gay man? Like come on, that is silly. If Frank was a part of a large group that Bill encountered that would be a different story. Also Bill, the paranoid survivalist turns his back to this random guy he just met to play the piano? Not even considering the possibility that this guy could try to kill him and take over his town?

@@herpetolgyprodigy We didn't get to see the other refugees who blundered into Bill's traps over the years only to be sent packing without a meal before Frank who interested him enough to be allowed inside. He still held him at gunpoint, jumped when he came upon him suddenly when delivering his meal, and remained armed at all times. No, the piano scene didn't bother me. What bothered me was Bill getting shot while standing in the middle of the street for no reason, something he's way too smart to do without any visible sign of an imminent fence breakthrough, which might have justified it. Still, it's a minor error that was more than justified by the subsequent scene that further cemented the roles of the two men as Bill lay, supposedly dying - Frank who needs protecting and Bill, the protector, who always overplans everything. If you're determined not to like it, don't like it, man. If it makes you feel more manly, go review bomb it and throw away all your Bud Light. That's fine. You can literally find scores of reactors across KZbin who visibly sobbed at the beauty of this relationship and its conclusion including the soldier above. They were all emotionally unstunted enough to recognize beautiful television when they came across it. I'm genuinely sorry for anyone so blinded they can't see it.

@@watsonsd1Right, so what you're saying is you think Bill encountered other people before Frank and yet he sent them packing to die on the road because they weren't gay and wouldn't sleep with him? If that's the case that kind of makes Bill seem like a piece of shit right? Sending potentially innocent people to their deaths because they weren't gay or attractive enough for him. If that's the case that kind of makes this episode a lot less beautiful knowing that's what Bill was doing.

@@watsonsd1 Yeah that's why I'm so confused as to why you people find the episode to be so heartwarming and touching. Bill is a piece of shit in the show. Why the fuck are you so heartbroken about him dying? He is an asshole in the game but at least they don't try to pull off any forced melodramatic bullshit. In the game the most you get is one scene of him finding Frank's body, you can tell he is choked up but then the survivalist in him takes over and he withholds his emotion and says "fuck him", it felt so much more real in terms of how a guy like Bill in that world would actually act.

Great reaction. Both stories of Bill/Frank-the game and show versions-are great for different reasons. It's like the game's storyline takes the start of Bill and Frank's story from the show, but looks at what would happen if their fighting and differences grew progressively worse until they split. As for COVID- The signs of it being bad were already evident at the end of 2019 (around Thanksgiving), though mostly focused in China. But with international air travel being what it is, people in the US were already getting sick by Christmas. I was hit pretty hard by COVID at the end of January 2020... five to six weeks before everything started shutting down with the "shelter at home" notices. Even being a huge Last of Us game fan, and having COVID, I never once thought of the game in those terms. COVID is a virus related to the flu. An eventual vaccine was pretty much a forgone conclusion (No real vaccines for fungal infections-treatments, but no vaccines). Even though the virus was severe and the fatality level was higher than anything most of us have seen in our lifetimes, it wasn't transmitted THAT fast. Perhaps it was that, or maybe just the fact that I had already dealt with being infected, it never really reached the level of "Oh my God, it's the apocalypse!" in my mind. I even played the Last of Us a couple of times since the outbreak.

My worst march memory: Military exercise. We went out on a Wednesday, did a bunch of fieldcraft-stuff, shooting, rappelling off cliffs, checkpoint security and whatnot, marched everywhere, everyday. Late on saturday evening we get the orders to make it back to base by dawn, marched through the night, got to the rendezvous point, got to nap on our assembly yard for like an hour before we were made to stand at attention and watch the flag get raised at dawn. Then we got the new orders to march back out for another three days in the field.
