An absolutely brilliant podcast. Dylan was so honest, inspiring, courageous, and humble. I cried with sadness during the low moments and cried with joy at how he overcame them to finish the almighty task. A huge gratitude to Bill for his words of wisdom. This old sage knows best. Dylan congratulations to you and well done to your brother for such thoughtful questions and words.

The course literally goes right in front of my house here in Ouray. I went outside to cheer Dylan on and it was entirely evident that he was having a seriously rough time. His face said everything. This gives some context…. Thanks for being open and candid about your experience.

I think that probably was the biggest and best podcast question of all time! This was a great conversation and I took a lot from it. Thank you for being vulnerable and open. Congratulations on your epic finish; for what it's worth - and as a mid/back of the pack ultra runner - I respect this finish the most

As a passionate of our sport getting emotional listening to your words about your hardest racing experience. This year I quit at my first 100 mile attempt and I kind of better understand what it can take to make it to the finish line. Thanks for sharing and congrats to your brother who did such a great job hosting you. Poetic, mindful & kindful way of drawing the picture of this immense accomplishment of yours! Wish you all the best for your current mountain climb. Keep inspiring us and impacting our sport as you do! Cheers from 🇫🇷

I am not an ultra runner, but love long backpacking journeys, and doing hard things in the wilderness. So I find ultra running fascinating from a distance because it is a metaphor for life. Pushing mental and physical boundaries builds grit, and perseverance which preps you for the inevitable hardships in life. Jason was a treat. Loved learning about the myth of Sisyphus. Never in a million was that in my post-hardrock media bingo card. Thank you!

Bill is the man, spent all week hanging with him. He loves this race as much if not more than anyone I have talked to. He made super detailed break downs of eta's for his friends at every aid station, fingers crossed he gets his qualifier this year as he fights cutoffs at most he qualifiers and has not ran the race yet. People like him are why I will do everything I can to never miss a hardrock. Also, we can always use help at Cunningham on the even years Dylan!

Thanks for sharing your story. Your authenticity and deep love of the sport make you an easy guy to root for. I hope as you become more removed from the trauma and the emotional and physical slog of the event, you’ll feel more of your bro’s perspective that this was your best race. To finish (in 9th!) through such misery is really incredible, and is a sign not of your ‘decline’ but of your potential

Dylan has inspired me time and time again to keep the struggle going and the ultra-world owes a mountain of gratitude to him and everything he's done for us. Once again, you've proven why you're one of the world best.

Dylan, God bless you for continuing on after Chapmen, I remember being in a spot at the Whiskey Row 60 K ultra where I sat down on a rock and contemplated dropping at the nearby aid station. A wonderful fellow runner came up to me and She said, “ you look good and we’ve got this right.” This encounter with her saved my run and I had a wonderful finish.

What a great Listen Guys! I was a first time volunteer at Hardrock this year, at Animas fork aid station. Saw you come through there. Certainly could'nt tell you were struggling.yet. Those fucking climbs are so soul crushing, what an immense undertaking! I too saw our aid station captain and volunteers coaxing each runner to continue, really something to see. They come in with that 1000 yard stare, convinced they are done. To see them rest, hydrate and continue up that shit is quite moving.Way to tough it out Dylan! One of the best podcasts I've listened too! Thanks for sharing

Dylan, congratulations on another finish, you found some amazing spirit to get through it. This is what ultra running is all about. I have run 73 ultras myself and can share in your experience of it being an unusually hot day. My wife and I were in Ouray and I went out for a run on the course up to Grizzly Mine from the Ouray aid station. I remember thinking, wow, I’ve had to soak my hat in bear creek twice and our dog had to lay under a couple of trees and cool of in bear creek. It was very warm and beautiful at the same time. Once again, congratulations.

A few comments. I loved this episode because we saw and learned so much about DBo and ultras in general. I run because the problems i work through running are more visceral and are not the usual issues i face at work or at home. Watching DBo's emotions and discuss his moments connecting with the ultra community is why most of us probably do this. Lastly, i want to thank DBo for everything he has done for this community. I plan on getting some GS Tams because of this and then will look to try to give back in other ways.

This was a great episode however my allergies kept acting up during it so I may have to watch it again. I have this theory on why we ultra run....it's because deep down we enjoy being humbled. If you look at the greater scope of ultra runners they tend to be fairly successful people. One thing is 100% certain about ultra running and it's that you will be humbled at some point. Even if you win a race or beat your goal etc. during that race you got your ass handed to you. There seem to be no cocky people in trail running and that's for a reason. I'm a very confident person but those mountains tear me a new one......and I kind of love it:)

@jocelynbriggs We were very happy you made it to Chapman even though it was after the cut-off. EVERY runner commented on how brutal that section was from Telluride. They were all shocked at how long it took. You were definitely not alone and we would have come up to Oscar's to get you if necessary.

Great recap. You have a awesome family. I very rarely have family at ultras so don't consider it a given. Your business doesn't matter much about location. I suggest move to Leadville , Silverton, Ouray, Durango etc or an area which is a better match than bay area then start training for the next opportunity to win Hardrock. You are very young for the masters level ultras. Keep pushing for it. I think you can win it.
