I don’t see any videos on leveling/grading the base layer. If the base layer isn’t leveled you will have more than 1 inch. Particularly if you are grading for a slope.

Hey you’re very welcome! No typically it is pretty dry from the supplier but there is a little bit of moisture, meaning it’s not bone dry.

Where do you get the one inch square tubing ?

Any metal supplier (our local one is called Metal Supermarkets) should have 1” square tubing and can cut to various lengths.

Why not compact the sand?
@HardscapeCanada
@HardscapeCanada 2 ай бұрын
It is best to leave the sand uncompacted so that your screed stays very flat, and then once you lay your pavers you compact the paver surface, which drives your jointing sand into the joints, but also sets the pavers into the bedding layer, which helps with what we call “lock up” creating a tension across the surface that is the true strength of paver installs.

Does anyone else ever consider that if you’re kneeling or walking on the soft bedding layer before you screed it that you’ll have areas that are more dense than the areas you haven’t compacted and the fact that those areas won’t compact as much as the other areas which will cause the pavers to be uneven or am I over thinking it? Also some installers will have dips in their base layer so they are actually laying a 3/4-1.5” bedding layer and if that compacts down 50% then it won’t compact down the same. Anyone follow that? I went to Techo-bloc seminar and they said 3/4” crushed stone doesn’t compact and basically you don’t have to run a compactor over it, yeah ok.

Thanks for the great video! I'm doing a small BBQ station and was wondering about your thoughts on using a tamper on the sand before the final leveling?
@HardscapeCanada
@HardscapeCanada Жыл бұрын
Hey awesome! I don’t recommend using a temper on the sand, as we want to use the tamper on the pavers that we lay on the sand after, it helps drive sand up into the joints of the pavers and create what we call ‘lock up’

And now any ideas on how to remove cement/concrete staining from around the red bricks because I was too lazy to wash/wipe them off before they dried?... :(

Try a pressure washer, maybe a few lite taps with a chisel to scrape as well any bigger chunks. Muriatic acid may be an option too!

Sorry to complicate this, but there is no one to ask. I’m putting down 24x24 porcelain pavers around two giant planters (32” tall x 6.5 feet long each). But I’m worried the water will not drain from the planters (esp if I use polymeric sand for the paver joints).. I hate to use gravel as a top layer because I don’t want to have to rake pine needles off gravel. Nobody seems to know exactly this kind of stuff, but an educated guess is appreciated. Whether the earthworms can get under the gravel is yet another unknown.

What kind of sand do you use for this?
@HardscapeCanada

Sand varies quite a bit depending on location, I use a coarse sand called concrete sand for screeding like this.

yu don't use a compactor on the sand?
@HardscapeCanada
@HardscapeCanada Жыл бұрын
Nope! Best to compact the pavers after setting them on the sand, it creates more of a ‘lockup’ effect driving sand up in between the joints.

@@HardscapeCanadaany risk of breaking the pavers with the compactor? Maybe not with bricks I guess, but what about flat tile-like pavers?

Is he working ACROSS the grade (upslope to one side, downslope to another). Or is he working WITH the grade from high to low (or vice versa)?

As long as you make sure the bars are at the correct height (to your slope) it doesn’t matter. Sometimes it’s easier to go downhill, other times it depends on where you have access from for the sand. In that case you’d start at the farthest point and work your way back to your sand pile/access point.
