As a newbie to cold hardy citrus I appreciate the tasting notes. Actually, I'd love a broad breakdown, like a 101 about all the hardy citrus. I have to be more selective with what i grow and there are sooo many options out there but not a ton of info. Can't wait for the next tasting vid!

A careful viewing of this channel will reveal the creator has an extensive collection, that must have been sourced creatively over many years. He's got many cultivars that you cannot get as budwood or from nurseries...at least not anymore!

@@zacharyestep4556 sorry I missed this comment months ago. Yes, collecting all the different varieties of hardy citrus was a real challenge. Lots of investigating, emailing and networking to convince people to trade or sell scions. Thanks for acknowledging this challenge. Along the way I made lots of citrus buddies though!😁🤙

This was interesting. I would like them just for the flowers. But man..If you can get a decent flavor profile thats always a bonus

Earlier this year I purchased a foot tall citrumelo tree and also a citremon. I'm familiar with trifoliate orange because one grew wild near an apartment I lived in but this is my first time trying to grow any citrus trees. Do you know how long a citrumelo takes to mature and bear fruit?
@romeo97974 жыл бұрын
From seed, it will take about 10 years...

Hi Octavia! Sorry I totally missed your comment 4 months ago😟. It's weird how I get notified about some comments but not for others. In my experience it takes about 4-8 years for first flowers to appear. It all depends on growing conditions, length of growing season, winter lows etc. In a pot that could take longer. Pruning the tree would delay the trees maturation process too.

Have you tried hand-pollination and making crosses yourself? After all you have a large collection of different hardy citrus
@VirginiaFruitGrower4 жыл бұрын
I have but in the midst of caring for all the other trees I managed to kill off potential hybrid seedlings. Also when everything is blooming at the same time it's very hard no to get cross pollination and keep certain flowers isolated. I'll have to rethink this and try harder this spring. Thanks!
@XoroksComment4 жыл бұрын
@@VirginiaFruitGrower Ok, when you cross pollinate you can use flowers that are just about to open and remove the petals manually. Then put pollen on them, put a tag on the branch and bag the flower with a mesh to avoid accidental cross-pollination.

These cold hardy citrus are so cool! Are the hybrids of the Trifolate Orange evergreen or deciduous?
@VirginiaFruitGrower4 жыл бұрын
Hey DrArmSleeves! The majority of the trifoliate hybrids are decidious. Taitri is usually the first to loose its leaves. Thomasville however remains evergreen unless hit with an extremely cold winter then it will defoliate. Thanks for your comment!

@@VirginiaFruitGrower I've always wondered how these hybrids would grow. I'm new to world of cold hardy citrus and not sure where to find information yet. I love the citrus breakdown videos! They give me hope for trying to grow my own citrus in on zone 7b! They may be more bitter and sour then store bought varieties, but I can find ways to use them when I get some!

Thanks for another great video. I have a request: when you describe a complex hybrid, could you please use parentheses? (Yuzu x Orange) x Trifoliate is different from Yuzy x (Orange x Trifoliate). The first would be 50% trifoliate and the second would be 25% trifoliate. Without parentheses I don’t know which it is.
@VirginiaFruitGrower3 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa 👋. Thanks for noting that detail that I'm forgetting to include. It does make a difference! I'll try to make sure I specify the cross order with parentheses 🤠👍. Great to see you stop by!

I bought 3 changsha mandarin, I'm curious to know if you have one or tried them before. I got them from McKenzie farm in SC, so I dont know what type of changsha. Love your videos, thanks for sharing man.
@VirginiaFruitGrower4 жыл бұрын
Yes changshas can be good if you have a decent selection. Most are insipid without much flavor but are at least not sour, bitter or have weird skunky flavors like trifoliate crosses. Some years they are great although almost always very seedy. I'm not sure how good Stan's 'mother' changsha tree is that he is using for grafting. I have a selection that I call 'Honey Changsha' that pretty consistently produced flavorful fruit until it got almost wiped out in our 3-4 degree freeze a few years ago. It's come back and I've propagated it to make sure I don't loose it. In any case best of luck with your trees! It'd be best to protect them the first couple winters on the harshest days to get them established.

Hey do you have any seeds available and do you sell internationally to Europe?
@VirginiaFruitGrower3 жыл бұрын
Hi Badboyifier! I do not have any seeds currently. I have just a few fruits ripening on the trees this year. I don't normally ship overseas but sometimes make exceptions. I'll have to see what I have this fall as far as seeds. Thanks so much for watching :)
