LYRICS:
I got turned around in some little town
I’d never been to before
Working my way through a middle of June
Midnight thunderstorm
There was something in the headlights
That stopped me on a dime
Well she was scared to death
So I said climb in and in she climbed
Oh Yeah
Well she was bruised and broke from head to toe
With a tear in her blood stained shirt
She didn’t tell the whole truth
But she didn’t have to I knew what had happened to her
I didn’t load her down with questions
That girl had been through enough
I just threw it in drive
Looked in those eyes
And asked her where he was
I don’t know if he’s angel
Cause angels don’t do what he did
He was hell bent to find the man behind
All the whiskey scars I hid
I never thought my day of justice
Would come from a judge under his seat
But I knew right then I’d never get hit again when he said to me
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Well I knocked and knocked and no one came
So I kicked in his double wide door
I let the hammer drop before he got to that twelve he was reaching for
I didn’t try to hide my pistol
I didn’t even try to run
I just sat on the porch smoking one of his cigarettes
And waited for the cops to come
I don’t know if he’s angel
Cause angels don’t do what he did
He was hell bent to find the man behind
All the whiskey scars I hid
I never thought my day of justice
Would come from a judge under his seat
But I knew right then I’d never get hit again when he said to me
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Whoa
Have mercy on me Lord
Have mercy on me
Have mercy on me Lord
It’s been sixty months
And she still comes to to see me from time to time
It was worth the price to see a brighter side of the girl I picked up that night
And I might be here forever
It ain’t paradise that’s true
But it’s a whole hell of a lot better
Than the place I sent him to
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Have mercy on me lord
Have mercy on me
Have mercy on me
Have mercy on me
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck

Hardy, I want you to know that as a 60 year old woman, what you expressed in this song resonates with a lot of women and men. From the perspective of a woman, you hit the nail on the head with the 2 lyrical lines, "I just asked her where he was" and "wait in the truck". Those 2 phrases are so powerful when a woman has been beaten and hunted down by someone. From a man's perspective, there are men out there that have NO patients for someone who beats a woman and want to do what you portrayed in this song. It is lyrical GOLD and touches both men and women deeply.

A few years ago, I got a call from my sister about 03:00 crying and asking me to pick her up. Her husband was drunk and trashing their home, I am sure I was halfway out the door before I even hung up. I arrived at the place and my sister was waiting outside, I got her into my car and first thing I asked was if he hit her. She told me no, so I took her to my house to rest. I couldn't sleep, so had one of my brothers look over her while I went out. That night I drove to a random farmers field and dug a hole, about six feet deep. Took a picture of it and then drove to my sisters home to chat with her husband. He was all "sorry, I was drunk..." I cut him off immediately. I showed him the picture and asked if he knew where that was, "No." Then I informed him if the event repeated he will know where the hole is and walked away. We never discussed it after, I never mentioned it to my sister and she never mentioned the threat to me. But, from then on when their was alcohol involved at an event and I was going to be there he magically had other plans her had to attend to.

Two sides to every story. My sister was very abusive to her kids dad. Bragged about it to our family, but with other people, she made herself to be a victim. I disagree with what he did because he wasn't man enough to go talk to find out what happened. If that was my son and some punk ass stranger who didn't know my son killed him. He wouldn't have made out of jail, because I would have put a hit on his head.

@@ginohunter3198 No doubt there are folks who lie. I was talking about if this was my daughters. If someone put hands on them, they would be on the buisiness end of me. No "hit" put on them. Just me. The way I was trained. Then I get to see the lights go out right before I go. World of difference though. I know how to clean up.

I am a survivor of a horribly physically abusive relationship. When I got wheeled into the ER after days of being beaten with 2 broken bones, basically no hair and a busted up face, the doctor said I looked like a war veteran. It was a war. This song to me is amazing. All of us in DV at one point or another prayed or wished for a savior. This song got me. So strong. So powerful. So. It's real life, folks. So amazing.

My sister and I said the exact same thing when this song came out! We were both married to abusive men, in our 20’s. It was almost the unspoken norm in small town, Okla. Fortunately, we had each other for support and recognizing not only our self worth, but the emotional damage it would cause our children, growing up in that environment. We were lucky, we got out, went to therapy, and learned what a healthy relationship is! Not everyone is that lucky. More importantly, not every battered woman is the stereotypical, uneducated girl living in a trailer, married to a whiskey fueled abuser. My hell was a 3,800 sq. ft. home that looked like heaven from the outside.

This song touched my SOUL. Coming from a woman who was nearly taken from this world by the hands of a man who said " he loved me" this brought me to tears and I NEVER cry. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this song. It's so comforting knowing that there are still men in this world who stand up for those of us who have had our voices ripped away from us. I lost 11 years to torment but gained the ability to see abuse from a mile away. Keep writing these because the world needs to hear it!! 👏👏👏

And felt such a relief to know that someone actually had enough heart and soul to put into words that we as women need a voice of reason to speak up for us especially when when we're not able to. At least I made it through it 14 stab wounds and I'm still here today. A stronger and better person with an eye for danger.

This song gives me chills! I want part 2, the prequel where his mom tells him as a kid to “stay in the truck” while she runs into their house to grab what she can while his dad is out of the house. Unfortunately dad shows up and puts a stop to mom leaving. 😢Next scene is the police officer saying “stay in the truck” while two bodies are being rolled out of the house on stretchers. He couldn’t save his momma, so he vowed if he could ever save anyone else from that fate, he would do it at any cost.

@SaltyZera

Lainey's 'thank you' at the end of the third verse hits so damn hard. It's like she's not only thanking him for rescuing her; she's thanking him for restoring her faith in both herself and in people. Even as she loads up in his truck, you can see her struggling with her own self-doubts. But as she raises her eyes and sees the Cross, she puts it in drive and rolls on. That's the most tragic thing about those in the throes of domestic abuse. Regardless of how it ends, the victims are left with no other choice but to pray, lean on Calvary for strength and move on as best they can. Thank you, Hardy. Be blessed friend.

When I first heard this song I sat there with tears streaming down my face, as a DV Survivor I realized I am her. It took years to get out but I did and never looked back, the system can fail us, the hotlines can fail us. My angel came in the form of an Apartment manager, the night before it escalated, I fled to a friends with my 4 year old son. I walked in and asked for an apt. She took one look at me and asked my story. I told her, and she gave me the keys right then and there, everything else just feel into place. Thank you for this song.

@mattr1554

That's about the only justice that works in DV situations. Courts don't do crap. Restraining orders don't work. And the police are minutes away when seconds count. I worked with a lady who's daughter was murdered by her husband. She was divorcing him due to DV. She had a restraining order, and it did not good. He beat her to death. He beat her so badly she wasn't even recognizable. Then he dumped her over an overpass bridge like she was trash. The messed up part is, he somehow hid his past, and was in prison before for attempted murder on his previous girlfriend. He should have never been let out of prison. Our justice system fails the innocent at every turn. And it's even worse for guys who are victims because police and judges don't believe a man when he is saying that he is being abused and beaten. Not bad mouthing women at all on that. Just saying. My cousin's ex-wife beat him to a bloody pulp all of the time. Luckily he was able to finally get away from her, but the law did nothing to help because they didn't believe him. They kept telling him that he was doing it to himself to try to play the victim. And I remember specifically one time, he called the cops on her, and they arrested him instead of her. In situations like that, if you want to have a life, you have to take a life, because a good person is more important than a monster. This song should serve as a warning to any person that thinks it's okay to use violence on another person like this. Because I can guarantee you, that if I was in the situation described in this song, I'd be saying, "Wait in the Truck".

Because alot of women fall trap to Genes + Alpha Male... AKA liking the Tough Bad boy.... AKA the Alpha Lion... Well... hopefully people grow out of that and realize that security and showing some vulnerable qualities isn't too bad... But that mostly doesnt happen... Its about the genes/Alphamale... Sigh... I gave up at 25 lmao... I got a cat... Im good with her... Everytime I was outgoing and loving Id get women, but as soon as I started realling loving the woman... I apparently scared them away by being to vulnerable. What a crazy world...

We love this song. I am a Black female. I have never been in a DV situation but I now far too many women who have. I was never so proud of my husband as I was that Christmas morning when he beat our neighbor's arse. The guy first beat his wife bloody. When their son (on his 18th Christmas birthday no less) tried to intervene, he started chasing the boy with a tire iron. I shouted for my AF vet husband, but did not expect the beatdown he gave the guy, who was white. Thankfully our neighbors stood in solidarity with my husband. We lived in a very diverse neighborhood. All the races came together and said no to DV. The police took the abuser away. She and her son moved back to her home state.

He has a scar on his hand from trying to get to him. He would have killed him if I hadn't stopped him. Young man, that is the same exact spot I was in a whole bunch of years ago. I'd lay in bed crying, yes I'll admit it, at 15yo asking God to just take me and end all the suffering caused by the hands of my mom's choice in men. It may not feel like it right now, but guess what? You hold all the power. My greatest achievement in life wasn't finally kicking his ass, how much money I made, the size of my house, or the car that I drove. It was ending a multi-generational cycle of domestic violence. You have that power right now. Sounds like you've found your man stripes. Wear them proudly. Strength, honor, duty, loyalty.

Literally…a perfect written song! My dad was a morning drive jock and program director of a chain of stations. He decided what got airplay. He’d listen to a song for maybe 15 seconds and either took it off or continued to listen! I’d cry over the ‘tossed pile’ and say ‘Daddy you didn’t even give a chance’” And he would say “Baby, Daddy knows what he’s listening for”. Took me years, but I honed my ear, and I get it! And TRUST….THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN STRAIGHT SMOOTH IN ROTATION ON EVERY STATION! It’s a perfectly made song. Entirely!

@Hardy He went to prison and she got out of prison. In a real life story we might learn he grew up watching his mom endure this as that would explain his resolve to react. He had no angry emotions, just resolve to protect her. It did not have to be someone he knew to protect her. In a movie I would hope he would get released for good behavior and they get married and they both live their love for each other as it was meant to be experienced by God on earth.

So happy you got away! People fail to realize that when people are oppressed, their will is no longer free. We see this on a large scale with people who are enslaved as in Communist countries-the power lies with the bullies and violence is a pretty good deterrent. In families, it is just as complex, with the dependency that we have on each other, children can be involved, and you have to have help and a plan or you will never find the chance to find the will and the strength. May bless you with a wonderful New Year!❤

Because, I start balling like a baby. My Daddy abused my mother violently and was never punished for it. God punished him with a double stroke paralyzing his body and kept him with bed sores in a nursing home for 7 years. You and Lainey have created a classic unforgettable classic. I love the fact that it's been 60 months. And she's still driving the truck that picked her up and saved her. Knife, change and cigarette lighter still left in the same place. Trucks, next to a dog, the second best friend ever!

I relate to this song so much. MANY TIMES I prayed for help. Many times I wished someone would save me. It's not always simple to get out of these situations. I used to believe no one would love me, that I couldn't do any better. I still struggle with myself. But I could never let another man beat me. This is absolutely my favorite song! I cry Everytime I hear it. But I love it!
