As a name of Vishnu, Krishna is listed as the 57th name in the Vishnu Sahasranama. Based on his name, Krishna is often depicted in idols as black- or blue-skinned. Krishna is also known by various other names, epithets, and titles that reflect his many associations and attributes. The Hare Krishna mantra, also referred to reverentially as the Maha-mantra ("Great Mantra"), is a 16 - word Vaishnava mantra mentioned in the Kali-Santarana Upanisad.In the 15th century, it rose to importance in the Bhakti movement following the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This mantra is composed of three Sanskrit names - "Krishna", "Rama", and "Hare".
When followers of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu teach and practice the Mahamantra, it is rendered with the name Krishna first. So the followers of International Society for Krishna Consciousness read it as
