I enjoy walking the stretch of the canal between Huncoat/altham to Church,Oswaldtwistle when I get chance. So much industrial history along the banks and also agricultural history with old farmhouses that are now long gone. Thanks for the videos Gary! History is always amazing to learn, especially the history of my hometown and surrounding areas

The John Hargreaves of Broadoak was also a coal owner. He was a partner in Ashworth Hargreaves and co, after 1870 George Hargreaves and co ltd, Accrington and Rossendale collieries. There was something about John Hargreaves family that Alice Through the looking Glass was based....Enjoying your vids. Clive

@@lancashirehyndburnrealhist4380 I have a court transcript for a case involving all the partners from 1869. The old partnership with John Hall was dissolved, John Hall and his son ran the Baxenden mines. In the 1840's when the previous lease was signed they wanted to split the lease, John Hall and John Hargreaves taking the Baxenden and Accy pits and George Hargreaves and Richard Ashworth taking the Rossendale pits. The Duke of Baccleugh wouldnt allow it and said it had to be done as one lot. there was a big fall out in 1860's over new lease and Hall Reckoning Hargreaves were taking all profits to invest in Rossendale. John Hargreaves gave evidence. There may well be a Thomas...I havent really followed them much as I have consentrated on George and his family.

I grew up in this are and played on that section of the canal in the 50s and 60s . Pity you cant see the archway and gate in all its glory. The self seeded tree is obstructing it. Of course, the canal was still a working cut back then and the wharf and warehouse still in use. I continue to play on canals to this day

This area is in dire need of clearing and restoring. Sadly the authorities have let it rot to the state its in and yet its a historic area of Lancashire industrial revolution. Maybe its because its out of sight out of mind.

@@lancashirehyndburnrealhist4380 I dont unfortunately. In those days you only took pictures on your holidays....the canal side of the street had one row of terraced houses for half it's length then a warehouse building . At the end was a mill building used by Emerson and Renwick fabrication engineers. The opposite side had a large but derelict cladding type steel building ( garage or vehicle workshop) and a large yard area. Further down there was another mill which was textiles based as they had cages full of healds , reeds and pirns for shuttles

The owners were broadoak works in Accrington Thomas Hargreaves and Adam Dugdale. Thomas Hargreaves built oakhill mansion near the factory.
