The main problem is nowadays youtubers and high industry standards set an unrealistic expectation bar for young minds these days. Coding is a skill it takes years to master it. It's not like I went so and so months into coding and cracked 80lpa package. This is the main reason students don't focus on developing skills first rather focus on that "80 lpa".

I disagree.... Our country is behind not because there is mediocrity in CS field but there is not enough expertise in other field than CS. Not all jobs and startups are software based and that is why in India what everyone is trying and most are failing. Manufacturing, electronics are some of the industries that have made USA and China what they are today. Even today if we have factories here most of the high standard precision machines come from Germany.

Most people rich or poor use other rich people's money. Unless you are starting a shop, restaurant or small business you don't really take debt. To start a big ambitious venture you 99.9% of the times need to raise funding and even if you fail noone will ask that money back. The only risk people are afraid to take is leaving the comfy guaranteed paycheck for uncertainty of starting their own venture which might fail and they'd be living worse life for years than they did in their job.

Typically I do not comment on provocative videos (thumbnail in particular), but I had a few thoughts as a US-born Indian who has done startups in the past: 1. The core of every business is ability to generate money, so who is going to pay you for your startup products? Generic answers like "obviously the customer" or "everyone" just doesn't cut it if you plan on going into business. You cannot afford to not know the answer to this question when the default mindset of most people is to save as much money as possible for retirement. 2. You mentioned a risk averse mindset - I agree that this mentality is prevalent, but not necessarily because it's safer as an employee. If you don't have guaranteed clientele, it just doesn't make any sense to go into the startup business, regardless of how good you might think your product is. 3. "build something that people want and solves a problem" (the typical Elon Musk / entrepreneurial quote), except most people don't even know what they want. Not only that, but there's an insane amount of survivorship bias from successful company CEO's (yes, the FAANG type companies). 4. Do people genuinely enjoy holding the highest amount of responsibility in a company? Nobody will care about the company more than the C-suite executives because other employees simply have no skin in the game. In many cases, CEO's literally just people manage, not even build the products. 5. Blind confidence doesn't guarantee that you will succeed and it is brutal if you think by the 'graces of God' that your startup will succeed. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from pursuing a startup and willing to hear people out about counterpoints that aren't ad hominem.

I think the whole comment can be condenced into one line " no matter what you do, you can and most probably will fail ". One of the biggest points that the video fails to mention is that, it's much easier to take a risk in US/China than it is in India. You can be a waiter somewhere in those countries and still make a decent living, giving you the opportunity to take risks. It's just not true in India for now. The biggest problem for the country is not the risk averse mindset of people, but the corrupt politicians (from all parties) that have kept india in the disastrous stagnant state we're in. Most of our taxes get looted instead of being used to boost the living standards of the common people. But in the end, common people are blamed for mediocrity.

Anytime I try to learn a language or learn any new concept, my feed is full of people trying to sell me a course on how to get a job using that. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, people need jobs. But for us who wants to know the concepts in depth, who wants to enjoy the journey, it becomes a barrier. Well, I disagree with you because Zomato does not rely on drivers and restaurants, it relies on the infrastructure and volume of consumers. Thus, it's goal is to reward the people who are keeping both the verticles up. Beyond that, the lack of competition and opportunities for restaurants and riders, is what gets them to stick to Zomato anyhow. That is how a monopoly works, by understanding what to capitalize and what to reward! Thus, please stop having a nobility bias about everything in the world. In this world, people earn in proportion to the effort they put in and the value they create. Every amenity is within reach 24/7. And we are happy to see Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore etc. . Its the manufacturing of electronics , consumer goods, energy, agriculture , these are the core sectors which gonna transform India. Also, paths of economic mobilization are very few in India; even these paths have very limited success rates (JEE/NEET/GATE/UPSC). Also, the education system in India is not good enough to support manufacturing, as vocational training is shit and not given in schools that much. Also, in India, the infrastructure is not good enough to support a large-scale manufacturing boom. Red tape is extreme, and many businesses suffer from this. There are other problems also which I haven’t mentioned.

Current AI dug it's own grave. People have globally started using AI for programming and a good amount of code is AI generated. AI can't be trained with data that was created by itself, this leads to subpar and a steep fall in quality of the AI output. Everybody is using AI, and now there's a scarcity of good code. AI today has a hit a plateau it will never overcome unless an entirely new innovation comes in. We need skilled programmers. We will always need skilled programmers. The way programmers communicate with computers changes, but skilled programmers are always an asset that the market is short of. This is why product based companies have insane salaries and service based companies have peanut salaries.

Because what the companies make you do isn't really challenging work that would make you think and learn new skills. It's the reality of today. Sitting in India, I can do fancy courses from MIT Open courseware or Coursera, leetcode to eternity, and I don't even get an opportunity to apply in my actual job. In every company that I've worked with before, the skills tested in the interview have always been much higher than what I've had to apply in my actual job. It's both an employer as well as an employee problem.

Apart from that everyone is jumping on the LLM bandwagon but no one really knows or has experience in it but still they expect a lot in the interview. There is a market but the competition is high. So to have an edge over someone else you really need to have something that people don't have I.e. Strong fundamentals and knowing how to apply those fundamentals to solve problems.

1 very important point I want to add: * Reason there is so less successfull large scale start ups in India is access to Risk Capital. Silicon valley has the highest access to Risk Capital. I think you are slightly mistaken-it might be true for an older generation (21+), but the people I meet are overambitious. However, they aren’t ambitious to the extent of wanting to bring about a revolutionary change (I hope to meet someone like that someday). The overambitious ones I encounter aren’t ready to put in the effort required for their ambitions. They sign me up for a project (which is a short-term thing), and after I’ve invested my time, skills, and created a plan to follow, they fail to deliver-even though it’s their own initiative. Risk appetite is lower in India becoz opportunities are far less. Too many ppl chasing few jobs/resources/college seats. Eg competition for getting a good college in india is toughest in the world. Dont talk abt mindset and mislead the youth. Most ppl are mediocre and they simply wont be able to succeed - odds of a successful startup is less than 5%. Surely some get lucky, those are exceptions.

You can call me salty but the same engineers who got a job for basically just having a CS degree worked for 10-13 years gained real life experience and built projects for large companies and now are calling new graduates mediocre. I get that a lot of people graduate without any CS knowledge but there are also people who graduate with 10x more knowledge than a person 10-12 years ago in the same 4 years span. I need those senior devs to put themselves in a current graduates shoes and think how they would survive in the current situation. There are a lot of mediocre jobs 4-9lpa but the second you start aiming for better jobs, thats when the problem starts. Even a new graduate is expected to have senior dev experience when they graduate and lets say you can even that experience in 6-12 months of dedicated hardwork. But what are you supposed to do when there are 1-2 lakh more people doing the same stuff as you? Do even better? Ok but then where does the cycle end?

As a person in with 1cr+ income and top tech job, I agree with what is mentioned in this video. I have risen from 0 to 1cr+ in 10 years with no engineering degree. And I have been studying AI to get deeper into it. However, I still feel that I am not doing enough, wasting time on social media, being risk averse, postponing things. Younger folks have a golden opportunity to make it big if they play their cards right.

Thanks for the wakeup call. On a side note, if you wanna lose weight, one simple thing which can actually help is cardio. Be it running, swimming, cycling or skipping rope. I'd recommend jumping rope, since it doesn't need lot of space, is pretty cheap and is best to burn calories even better than other cardio exercises

Thanks for bringing the Leetcode part Harkirat, just came out of a leetcode contest and I couldn't solve ANY of them, I've solved 200+ questions on Leetcode but these contests are difficult af and most of the time pointless. I was, on the other hand, watching my team lead create a trading console application that runs as a background service and gives real time updates about when selected stocks drop in price. Now which one sounds more fascinating? Knight on Leetcode or the guy who made his life easier using the skills he had developed and actually BUILT something? I think I'm gonna stop doing this leetcode BS cuz i really want to build stuff and would love to read system desing on the other hand as it is actually something that comes in use and is very interesting as well. Leetcode just sucks and doesn't add any value after a certain point. I wanted to vent this out and consequently I found your video just in time. Guess that's a signal from the universe to start focusing on the right things.

I do understand a good knowledge of DSA is very much required to be a good software engineer and hence I've solved Blind75, Neetcode150 and currently doing Striver's SDE sheet. I have 201 problems on leetcode only, but that's that. I know the basics and my critical reasoning has improved sooo much. But these contests are 🥜's bro 😂. They're insanely difficult for no reason and very little companies actually ask questions that are THIS difficult cuz most of them are non-intuitive. I want to be a better engineer so I'll start doing things I love now, and that's making projects. I was forcing myself to grind contests but I'm done with it. I'll do the striver's sheet and build projects on weekends
