Eddie Murphy wrote this because he wanted to work with his idols, Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor. Redd Foxx and Della Reese's on-screen chemistry was so good that they has a TV show for short while. Redd Foxx, ironically, died of a heart attack. Eddie and Charlie's uncle, Ray Murphy, was the guy with Robin Harris. Sunshine, Lela Rochon, is married to Anton Fuqua. He's directed quite a few Denzel Washington movies.

"So, where you wanna go, Pop?" "I don't know, Son. But we got a tank full of gas and a trunk full of money." "That sounds like a sweet combination." "Sweet as sugar." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Nona Gaye. One And Done Fact: Theatrical directorial movie debut of Eddie Murphy ...and his last. Count It Out Fact: "Fuck" and its various derivatives are spoken 133 times throughout the movie. Location Location Fact: Despite being set in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, the entire film is shot in Los Angeles. The Rest Of The Story Fact: Eddie Murphy once said that the jokes and camaraderie between him, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Robin Harris, and Della Reese behind the scenes were much funnier than anything that was in the film. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Quick (Eddie Murphy) drives a 1939 LaSalle Coupe. Phil Cantone (Danny Aiello) rides in a 1938 Packard Eight Formal Town Car with body by Rollston. At the end of the movie they leave in a 1938 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Limousine. Art Imitates Life Fact: The story of Irish mobster Bugsy Calhoune (Michael Lerner) trying to take over Sugar Ray's (Richard Pryor) night club in order to control black Harlem is loosely inspired by the real-life feud between Jewish gangster Dutch Schultz and black gangster Bumpy Johnson over control of Harlem's lucrative "numbers" gambling rackets in the mid 1930s.
