I bought the Sweet Baby off of Amazon and A/B'd it against a Bogner LaGrange and a Friedman Brown Eye pedal. The Sweet Baby totally held its own when compared to these expensive top shelf pedals.

Hello- I purchased the JOYO Vintage Overdrive quite a few years ago and have never regretted it. It has amazing harmonic overtones at any level and has some interesting sweet spots on the Tone knob. I paid $27 then (Lol), and they haven't gone up much since then. I've had ALL (many) of the vintage and modified, Ibanez TS pedals and loved them, but this thing gives you all of those tones at a fraction of the cost. I was a full-time gigging professional for most of my life since the late 70's till 2015' (was). Cheers

No doubt about that. I make and play 3-string Cigar Box Guitar, mostly fretless. They're usually loaded with a mini-humbucker in the neck position. The Joyo Sweet Baby delivers the subtle, warm, swampy crunch I'm looking for. If you're a Blues player, I think you need this pedal. I've paired mine up with a modified Joyo Tremolo pedal. This combo, allows me to produce some really steamy tones from my CGBs.

I've owned the Sweet Drive. It's good. It is very responsive to your dynamics while playing ( I.E. softer playing, less breakup, harder playing more crunch ). I think I was playing it with a 335 style semi-hollow and it had great tone.

Thanks for this great video. I have been looking at some of these pedals on Amazon all of which get good reviews, but was really wanted to hear the difference between them. As I looked at demos here on youtube they were all from different players with different gear so it is hard to really tell the difference. Your video made it crystal clear and I really liked how they all sounded. Thanks again. Can't believe I had not heard of the pedals sooner.

My favourite are Ultimpate Drive and Hot Plexi. They got the mids just right. Others are little too muddy without the bite of a cranked amp which make them a little boring. Extreme Metal is too bright to my taste, but maybe it's just the settings.

The Crunch Distortion is based on an MI AUDIO crunchbox which has a fair amount of high mids and can get a bit fizzy and the V30 has a fair bit of high mids too so maybe it is the speaker but it is probably cheaper to try a different joyo or get a a joyo EQ pedal if you like the base tone with the V30

I have a few Joyo pedals. I love them all, but probably the one pedal that I was least impressed with both here and during my use was the Vintage Overdrive. It is marketed as a copy of the Tube Screamer. I don't think it even comes close to this mark. I have to say my favourites are the US Dream and the Ultimate Drive. Both are meaty with plenty of tone.

Hi Peter, I don't use a webcam... most of the older Joy videos were done with a Canon Powershot 100, the newer models cost between 250-500 dollars... GREAT camera... some were also done with a very expensive 5D Mark II and a 800 dollar lens... Now I use VIDEO cameras for all the new stuff...

Hi Henning. I just ran into your videos today and I´m enjoying a lot! I really liked this one as it gives us a clue of the differences among these overdrive and distortion pedals. I have the Ultimate Drive already and it´s the only pedal from Joyo I have so far. But I intend to buy more. I intend to play mainly Hard Rock and 80´s metal with occasional pop-rock, punk rock and maybe some blues. So I have a few questions for you if you could please answer: 1-What are you favorite of these pedals and which are the least favorite? 2-If I would only chose 2 and regarding that kind of music I´ll make, which ones would you suggest? 3-How do you like the Extreme Metal, is it a very good pedal for 80´s metal(Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron maiden...) and even some hard rock? 4-What are the best to play 80´s hard rock(Whitesnake, Hair Metal, Michael Schenker, early Def Leppard etc..?)? 5-I believe giving examples of the bands that the pedal best suits is one of the best ways to chose the pedal. So, to add to last 2 questions, I ask, which are the best pedal(you can answer individually for each) to play: -Metallica -Judas Priest -Iron maiden -Whitesnake -Michael Schenker There are also other pedals you didn´t mention here, maybe you wanna mention any of those like the Pocket pedal. If I buy the Extreme Metal will I have everything the Pocket Metal has and more or they´re different? Hey man, sorry for so many questions, when I go searching something, I go deeply in it! :) So maybe you can help! :) but feel free to answer only what you want. Thank you very much in advance. Marcos
@Marcoshary
@Marcoshary 10 жыл бұрын
Hi. By the way, before you post your answer I have some more words, I´d like to know if you agree with me. I didn´t try the Ultimate Drive that much yet but at first I thought it´s a great pedal for someone who wants to play Black Sabbath. Do you agree with that? By the way 2: I have 3 amps: a Blackstar HT-1R, Marshall AVT100 and a Fender Deluxe 90. By watching this video, the ones I liked the best at first and are considering more are: -Deluxe Distortion -Extreme Metal -Crunch Distortion -Us Distortion Those options I think are the most suitable for me but I also liked the Sweet Baby. Funily enough, I though about buying the Ibanez Tube Screamer, so the Vintage Overdrive should be the natural choice but the VO didn´t impress me that much in this video. And reagarding only this cideo, the plexi may have been the one I liked the least. By the question I left to you, I´ll try to guess pedal is more suitable to play that band´s genre. Later you tell me if I got it right(if you want of course. Thanks.): -Judas Priest - Extreme Metal, Deluxe Crunch, Crunch Overdrive and Us Dream should do it. -Metallica: Extreme Metal and Us Dream? -Iron Maiden: Extreme Metal and maybe Deluxe Crunch? -Whitesnake: Crunch Distortion, Deluxe Crunch, Us Dream and maybe Extreme Metal? -Michael Schenker - the same as Whitesnake? I brought a lot of stuff to you, please feel free what you want to answer(please, everything lol). Thanks once more. Best regards.
@EytschPi42
@EytschPi42 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Marcos.... holy crap, you wrote a lot... Let me give you the short answer... All the stuff you mentioned is 80s metal. In the 80s the guitar sounds were relatively thin and only played around in the mids. The bass is what gives them the low end. Today, a metal sound is THIN in the mids around 450 Hz and big below and above. So the modern metal sound is very different from the sounds you are looking for. The EXTREME METAL is too aggressive for me and I don't think it is very usable. Usually, for metal, you want a good amp that gives you the distortion you are looking for. If you have a transistor amp, the high end can get VERY annoying. So always aim for some kind of tube amp. There are many small watt amps around right now that sound just great. For the 80s sound you are looking for I would suggest the DELUXE CRUNCH or the US DREAM, they will give you those nice MIDS that the 80s metal sounds are known for.
@Marcoshary
@Marcoshary 10 жыл бұрын
EytschPi42 Hey Henning, thank you very much for replying! That's true, I'm looking for that 80's Metal sound and 80's Hard Rock (and maybe some 70's too). So, from what you said, something like the Joyo Pocket Metal is more suitable for modern metal? So I should go for the likes of Us Dream and Deluxe Crunch? Those will be good to play Metallica too, all eras, from 80's to modern day? If you say yes, than is more than settled, I will go for those 2, cause I guess that's more than enough to play everything I want. And you're right, a good Tube amp is a great idea, and my little Blackstar can do wonderful stuff! So I guess I'll have to rehearse with the amp, using probably the Marshall AVT100(while I don't buy a more powerful tube amp), which is an hybrid amp. Or my Fender amp, which is solidstate. So, some good pedals would be important. Oh, I also have the Vox Tonelab LE multi effects. The one that uses a tube. But I haven't had the time to try it that much, cause I hadn't been playing for quite a while. What do you think of those multieffects. It's said to have a very convincing overdrive and distortion, because of the tube. Oh, by the way, I saw your video of the Crunch Distortion and I loved it. It's probably the one I liked the best when you're using it with the bridge pickup. Great pedal! I'll try to buy that too(apart from the other 2)! Thank you very much once more and sorry again for another long message but hope you can answer it. :) I'll try not to make more questions to you. lol Regards

There are US retailers selling JOYO on there as well as Ebay if your put off by the Harley B thing.. I dont like the big pedals so the JOYO wins for me. Although they wont be on my board all the time, nice to have good sounding, inexpensive choices for gigs and home studio. Thanks for these quality demos. I think these get a bad rap by the pedal snobs, its just circuitboards for christs sake, get over it.

How clean can it get? You always test it out a bit cranked on your videos.

Henning, which joyo O.D. would you recommend for pushing a solidly crunchy amp into searing high gain?

The only Joyo pedal I own is the JF-33 Analog Delay. After using it a couple of times, the effects died on me. I bought it brand new. You can still send a signal through it along the chain, but no effects...too bad, asthetically, its a nice looking pedal, but that all. :(

I'm in the market for a "swiss army" distortion pedal that I can just keep inside my Peavey Royal 8 with a couple cable and take to jams without pulling apart or lugging around my full pedal board. I know there is no such thing as a one pedal fits all solution but which one do you think covers the most bases? We play everything from 70s classic rock to 90s grunge, light on the 80s stuff.

So happy I found this video! I just bought the High Gain distortion with the mid eq. Definitely going to get that plexi lead pedal next if I like this one! You're absolutely spot on! For 30 bucks, how can you not!

Hey Henning, just to confirm it: the Harley Benton Crunch Distortion is exactly the same as the Joyo Crunch Distortion right? Even if they have different designs? Thanks.

I use an Epiphone DOT, an Ibanez head TSA15H and V30 Palmer cabinet ... maybe I should change the speaker .... to lose overflow aggressive sounds. A Green Back maybe??
