Fantastic. That fingerboard is outstanding. All of it is. You've stopped doing your "hits" ie. drill a hole and fill it.😉

Hey Mark, thank you! That fingerboard is really sweet, the rest is coming together as well. I have had a run of pretty good luck lately. I haven't had the "two steps forward, one step back" issue lately. I'm getting my rest, eating right, paying attention to what I'm doing... A clean life really. LOL Sorry, It's late and I'm getting goofy. So far the biggest blunder was the applicator rag getting stuck to the fingerboard. That was an easy fix that didn't even break my stride. Thanks for watching, be safe and take care!

James, thanks for watching! I've enjoyed using CA on a number of fingerboard, and it doe a pretty good job of making the figure pop, agreed! I tried it on Rosewood once, didn't go well. Rosewood is waaaay too porous, never got a good look out of it. Some tests work, some don't. This one went really well. Take care!

Greetings from Florida US, thanks for watching. The fretboard is a really cool piece of Leopardwood. This was the first time I've used it, and it has some unique characteristics. It's a little splintery and doesn't cut the easiest with a fret saw. I think the CA will take the leopard in this wood. Take care!

Good day from Northwest Territory in Canada. I enjoyed spending Sunday morning watching you build this guitar. Originally I have been drooling over Fender's acoustasonic telecaster but can't really spend 3 thousand Canadian credits on another guitar. At least not while my wife is around. I thought "maybe I could build one". Anyway, other than buying guitars the other thing I do is start projects that require buying lots of new tools. Maybe $3000 isn't so bad for a guitar after all, ha ha. Anyway your videos are great.
@theNextProject
@theNextProject 2 жыл бұрын
Keith, thanks for watching, and watching! Glad the project kept you glued for a bit. I agree, the Fender Acoustisonic is a pretty cool idea, and I'm glad to see they haven't abandoned it already. My playing skill (or lack of skill) keeps me from buying "good" guitars, but my curiosity pushes me into attempting to mimic those guitars... Yep, I'm a bit off, ha. I hear ya, buying the guitar, or the tools... and materials, and ... ugh. Everything is expensive. I really should spend my time, and money, learning to play the guitar. Thanks for watching, and dropping the comments too. Take care!

Binding goes on the edges where the top/back and sides meet to protect it, purfling is a decorative inlay before the edge i.e. in violins. Guitars can get confusing because decorative purfling can be right after the binding or ornate binding material made to look like there's purfling.
@theNextProject
@theNextProject Жыл бұрын
Hey Rebecca, thanks for watching and the clarification on binding/purfling. I used abs/plastic binding material...as purfling I guess I should have noted. Good catch. Perhaps I called it binding, because that is what the product is sold as. My over simplified mistake. Oh well, the test went well. Hmm, I just realized I very rarely use the term purfling, but I'm always in a bind of some sort. ;) Hope all is well, take care!

Brian, good to hear from you! How did the excavation and gravel projects go? Smoothly I hope. The binding does look really good, and when the final finish goes on I hope the binding will visually pop a lot more. I used 0.040" black binding at the sound hole, and I'm thinking that 0.020" may have been a better choice. The 040 is pretty bold, but it works. Also, I didn't have a bit small enough for 020 binding at the time...I do now. Be safe, take care

Hey Reality, thanks for watching and the comment. There are a few other who use CA on fingerboards, I borrows the idea somewhere. It's a lot of 10-second work. A fingerboard could be ready to polish-sand or buff in about an hour, if everything went according to plan. It's not a finish for all fingerboards, an until now I'd only used CA on maple or roasted maple. Some woods don't need a finish such as rosewood, ebony... Bit this Leopardwood needed something. I had thought about using tru-oil, but wanted something a bit more durable. The worst of using CA are the fumes, very bad stuff. Take care!

paintboxpash, thanks for watching! I agree the big stack of templates seemed a bit out of hand, but the payoff is worth it. I often "try" to get away without a template, only to end up making one after struggling without. The electronics will be an issue. I expect the piezo under-saddle ribbon and an soundboard piezo won't output equally with the standard tele bridge pup. I don't want spend a bunch for an onboard preamp, and don't really have much room. More research needed. Greetings from Florida US. Be safe and take care!

Really great guitar build and such a good video series too! 👍 One tip; I cringed a bit when you did 35 coats of CA glue on the fretboard... I use a 2 part epoxy, made for surfboard topcoat use. It is quite thin when mixed and will soak into wood, but dries very hard and durable clear layer and obviously UV stable etc. You could have done that fretboard in 2 or 3 coats and got a better result for hardness toughness, durability etc. It can soo be used a grain filler and even a wood glue if you want something much stronger than PVA or other typical wood glues.

Wizrom, thanks for watching! I like the sound of the epoxy for fingerboard finish. I've used epoxy for grain filling before, I'm kinda on the fence for that. I know it's really popular, but I'm slow to commit, lol. As for the CA finish, I typically target 20-25 coats. That's about 1 hour of application time, pretty simple overall. I'm sure I'll try many other approaches I'm my future years. Thanks for the info, and I'll give options a shake. Be safe, and happy New Year!

@@theNextProject I just wanted to say the epoxy I see everyone using in guitar videos is very thick, personally I think that is a really poor choice. A good surfboard topcoat epoxy is very thin viscosity, flows like water and is self leveling at a top coat. It is similar to CA glue in a lot of ways without the toxic fumes and sticky problems of CA. Thanks for the reply dude. 👍🙂

@@theNextProject Sorry I cant say brand because I use it for work and not allowed to disclose. Also I'm in Australia so brands might not be available in the USA. But if you contact an industrial epoxy supplier and ask for a good quality 2 part epoxy for surfboard topcoat use it should have similar properties. Minimum quantity is normally 3kg and under a hundred bucks (maybe $65 USD), should do a great many guitars.

Furthermore, you have a very inspiring combination of three qualities - the talent of craftsmanship, the ability to simplify, and the intelligence to not use an insane amount of different machines and tools. After watching these 4 episodes, everybody could easily set up their own little working space and do amazing work, given the talent, of coarse. Thanks for sharing.

Nick, thanks for watching the videos! I appreciate the comment/compliment too. I try to simplify, but always feel like I'm making things more difficult. Strange how that works. I would like bigger and better tools, but work space and money typically don't allow, maybe someday. But honestly for a hobbyist like myself, using whatever you have, and figuring out how to make the wrong tool do the right job is kinda fun. I'm always attempting to learn new skills or improve the ones I have. I occasionally watch some woodworker videos and see things that are amazing and ideas I can fit to my needs. Thanks again for watching, stay tuned more on the way. Good luck with any projects you may have. Be safe and take care!

Al B, welcome and thanks for watching - from Florida! Good to hear you have a fun project going there! Hmm, adding CA to a fingerboard that has frets. That's a new one for me. I can only assume you are looking to apply a finish to a "maple" fingerboard - correct me if that's not the case. I'm thinking it may become a CA nightmare attempting to get over, or between all the frets. Clean up could also be a challenge, should something go wrong. I won't say it can't be done, I've just never tried it and honestly don't know the best approach without giving it a try. Have you considered using Tru-Oil since the frets are in place? Tru-Oil is pretty tough, and a lot more forgiving when applying. It won't be as quick of an application process, but you could probably get 2 "thin" coats on per day. I'd guess 10 thin coats total would be a good start. It would be reasonable easy to wipe off the frets while it is still wet... If you are interested in using Tru-Oil, look up "tru-oil and armor all". I haven't tried this approach, but it seems that tru-oil can be applied over a surface rubbed with armor all. Then the Tru-Oil is rubbed in until suddenly "hard". Repeated numerous times to reach the final build-thickness desired. Again, I haven't tried it - yet. It was in my mind for the body finish on this project, but I ended up using a tru-oil/naptha blend. Here are a few links if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iprRgpumacx7lZo www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=30377.0 castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?272676-armor-all-and-tru-oil www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331108&highlight=blond I appreciate the compliment too, a pint, or two also sounds good! @theNextProject 3 жыл бұрын
Wiretwanger3, greeting from Florida US. Thanks for watching, and that's a great question about the use of CA. I don't know all the science, but my limited experience with it on woods like maple have been very positive. The CA finish is very thin, very very hard, dries almost too quickly, easy to sand, polishes easily if you want a shine, and doesn't wear very fast for it's thickness build. I've only used this process on maple, and now this leopard wood. Maple takes CA really well, this leopard wood seems far more oily in nature and I wonder if the CA doesn't penetrate quite as well. I'm unsure about that, so this is a test, as is just about everything I do. I don't care for lacquer finished fingerboards, unless a road worn look is desired, but that's just me. I've never really liked lacquer. I sprayed cars with it decades ago and was glad to have other products to choose from - sorry, off topic. I'll be working on the next video soon, have a couple non-related repairs to tend to first. I hate it when life gets in the way of fun. Grr! Be safe and take care!

@theNextProject
@theNextProject 3 жыл бұрын
Joecarvin, thank you! That is a great question. On this particular fingerboard (Leopardwood) I think hammering in the frets would have been an issue. The CA at the fret slots would have probably chipped a bit, as this wood is a bit splintery. I also think the CA will help keep the frets in the slots as is. A bit off topic, but I really don't hammer in any frets now. Once I got the press, my fretting improved 100%, leveling became less needed... Just a better process. But I know that most people don't need, nor have a press, and hammering will do the job. I need to do a video of what a fret goes through when hammer in. It can be rather trumatic, lol. What radius do you sand into your boards? (I forgot to ask that on the Starcaster series -- I've since heard they came with a 12" radius standard, which I kinda suspected by eyeballing my back-bowed problem child.) Also, how long does the shine on the polished CA finish last? Seems it would be heck and a half to reapply after fretted!
@theNextProject
@theNextProject Жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, thanks for watching! Right now I'm either doing 12", or 14" radius boards, but I can make a fixture to hit just about any radius. Just haven't had the need yet. I can probably make a new radius fixture in 30-45 minutes now that I have the process figured out. I'm putting on 20+ thin fast coats of THIN CA. Very light sanding every 5th coat +/-. A final light sanding and polish to preferred shine at the end. I've got 2 guitars within arms reach. They both still have a shine, one at 2+ years, the other at 3+ years. No noticeable wear. CA works great on tight grain boards, maple and some exotic tight stuff. I don't suggest trying it in rosewood, or other open pore woods. As the sanding dust gets in the pores, not easy to clean out. Additionally, rosewood looks like plastic with the CA coating. Yes, I've tried ... struggled and failed. Rosewood just wasn't in the mood. Agreed, this is a "before fretting" process. I doubt it will need a refresh unless only a few initial costs are applied, but so far I've targeted 20+ coats and haven't seen or heard of any issues. I think I've done CA on 6 fingerboards at this time. I really do like CA on maple, and with some patience and practice it can look great!

What a great project. Been thinking about doing something like this myself for a while. Do I understand correctly that you use superglue as a fretboard finish? How did you prevent the fretslots from filling up?
@theNextProject
@theNextProject Жыл бұрын
Michiel, thanks for watching! This was a really fun project, I tried a lot of new ideas ( to me ), and overall the results were great. Yes, I used Superglue as the fingerboard finish. There isn't much that gets in the fret slots, and that that does either soaks into the end-grain of the fingerboard, or is cleaned out before fretting. I don't recall if I showed a "pre-fret" clearing of the fret slots. I do check all fret slots for debris, depth and such. If needed I'll either run a razor blade or fret saw through the slots. Since this fingerboard has no binding, it is easy to verify and clear the slots. Great question, and no worries about the Superglue causing a fretting issue, as long as we do clean the slots. I play this guitar (at my couch) nearly everyday. No sign of fingerboard finish wear. I have also done this to a handful of other fingerboards, and again no wear issues so far. In fact, I'm really surprised by how well it holds it's shine. Good luck with you projects, be safe and take care!

FastCap responded within hours and replaced the nippers I had purchased from Amazon. The replacement nipper from FastCap are not identical to the Amazon version. I don't know if there was a production correction made, or if there are some clones out there, but the new nippers I receive from FastCap are very good, just like my old original pair. Leepek, thanks for watching! The long extruded radius beam(s) I purchased from Philadelphia Luthiery Supply. I've had no issue with them, they seem to be very accurate in radius and straight. One word of caution would be the adhesive backed sandpaper you may use. Spend the extra little money and get good brand name paper, or you may have adhesive residue left behind on the radius beam. I typically remove the paper from the beam when done using it. Removing adhesive residue from the beam isn't the end of the world, but is a waste of time. This is no fault of the beam, but of some "affordable" adhesive papers. Hope this helps, take care!

Usually a rosewood fingerboard is unfinished wood that is oiled. Why did you use super glue as a fingerboard finish?

Hey grant, this is a Leopardwood fingerboard, not rosewood. This is also the first time I've tried Leopardwood, it's a bit different to work with. I think a finish is a must on this stuff as some people are allergic to it. Thanks for watching, take care!

Aaron, thank you! I've been concerned about video length and audience retention. But, as you stated, 15 minutes goes by fast. What to do... I just won't worry about it. I'm having fun and it seems most people feel the same way you do. Time flys, when you're _______. Thanks for watching and the kind comment. Take care!

Even though I don't know how to use any tools and not a guitar maker I really enjoyed watching your projects. Cheers from Philippines.

Jerome, I appreciate you taking the time to watch. No worries about not having the tools or being a guitar builder. I'm not a guitar builder either, I just find projects of interest and jump in, learn on the fly sometimes. Maybe the most important thing I've learned is to learn from everyone, good and bad practices alike. All the little tricks come in handy, often on a completely unrelated project down the line. That's when people say "oh, you've done this before" even if you haven't. I enjoy challenging my self, and modding a guitar is more educational to me than the scratch builds I've done. This is a perfect place to try things and test ideas. Some work, some don't, and the world keeps spinning. Thank you again for watching and the comment. Be safe and take care!

You could have build this from scratch. What did the kit bring you in this case, besides the wood, which is non-descript anyway? :)

Wilbert, thanks for watching and you are correct, I could have built this from scratch. But, I did get a nice box with the kit 😅. Really, there was no good reason to use this kit to make this guitar, and that may be part of the reason I'm doing it. Idk. One thing I've realized the last couple years while using kits for mod projects, is the mods are like repair work on steroids. I create so many "issues" working this way, that I'm always reinventing how I work. I think that is a good thing, takes me out of my comfort zone. Using a cheap kit also keeps me from worries of disaster. If I screw it up, I'm only out a few dollars,... and a ton of time. I have a scratch build of a different flavor starting in the next month or so. Totally different beast for me, but what I've learned from these cheap kits will likely come in handy. Thanks for watching, take care!

I guess doing it from scratch gives you a full liberty of choices for making your own guitar and make it totally different from any other in the world but modifying a kit is not the same, you have to do with what you have, with the base, modifying without changing the global look of the guitar making a new one totally different and almost the same from the box. But maybe I'm wrong... lol

@@robertruamps5680 I think you're on the money. Modifying a kit assumes the end guitar will somewhat resemble what the kit started as, unless the body were cut to a different shape... I'm not really altering the silhouette, or profile if the guitar mods, but otherwise there is little from the kit that is original. A scratch build can truly be anything, I guess. As long as I'm having a good time, and not getting injured, I like both ways of working. I'll have to try a collaboration build some day, maybe were each individual does a different part of the build/ mod. What could go wrong with that, hahahaha. yikes. take care!
