Harley-Davidson stalling after warming up? Might be the Engine Temperature Sensor. FIXED!

My 2012 Harley-Davidson Softail Heritage Classic kept stalling out when warmed up and when stopping at stop signs and stop lights. Engine light would come on then go off. My Power Vision would show the code of P0118.
Looked the cause up and most likely was the Engine Temp. Sensor. Went to Harley and picked one up for $50. It was a super easy fix and now the bike runs great!

I had the same problem and it was dangerous trying to ride the bike with constantly keeping the throttle high not to stall, what a pain in the A$$. Changed up the part and seems to be fixed, I never got a code for me to check, just went on KZbin to see if anyone else had the same problem. Thanks brother

Had the same problem on '13 Heritage Softail Classic. No codes thrown. Tried the throttle body cleaning method behind the air filter that is commonly found on KZbin, no difference. Found the engine temp sensor on Amazon for $15 and it fixed the problem. Need a 3/4" deep well socket to R&R sensor. Easy fix, thanks!

My 2006 would stall out when clutch is pulled in when hot. After chasing a few issues, ended up changing the temp sensor. The Chicagoland HD chain was out of stock with a 5 day lead time so I ordered one from the evil Amazon. Listing claimed made in Mexico, so I ordered it for $15. Bike would not read it and threw a code. Ordered another one, mfg in Brazil and that one works like a charm. Great video and in my case, just the answer to the issue I was experiencing.

I had exactly the same problem ! Anyway after watching your video I suddenly remembered I had changed the horn not too long ago and guess what ? I had upset the little plug a bit so I pushed it back in and that seems to be okay now...Cheers mate !

Yep! That was my solution too! Only my Electra Glide is a 1997, part at HD dealer was $110.00 and mine was located under gas tank and down on head in front. Need a deep socket to remove. Well worth money spent for part!👍

It happened to my 03 Heritage Softail Classic,same problems,mine didn’t throw any codes and that’s why I was baffled but I ordered it off Amazon for $15.00 or so and lo and behold,she runs amazing,after a list of things I put on her,Check Valve,plugs,Wires,air filter upgrade,and it was the sensor,so order one of your bike has these symptoms,V-Twin motors have it behind the horn coming off the front head

The engine temperature sensor is located at the rear of the front cylinder head on twin cams and the front of the rear cylinder head on M8. I had a cylinder head temperature sensor start to go bad on a ride from Alabama to south Florida bike would stall or want to stall when I was pulling into gas stations. I would check codes and here was none. As the temperature sensor starts to fail when bike is hot it sends a electrical signal to the ecm which controls fuel flow to the injectors and ignition timing. I was riding bike to my shop to replace the engine temperature sensor though not throwing code and on my way to shop engine sensor completely failed where the signal to the ecm way beyond the parameters of ecm corrections and my check engine lite came on made it to shop replaced the temperature sensors and cleared code. Bike is now operating fine. On the pre 2014 twin cam motors also remove electrical connector and inspect the wires as they were prone to fretting where pins join to wires inside the connector.

Was this an intermittent issue? Sometimes mine sounds like it want to die, and sometimes not. Always its when the engine is warm though. How easy is it to check codes with the PV? I have one, but never used it to check codes. Great video, thanks.

Temp sensor should never go bad unless made in China 🇨🇳 besides it should not cost half a hundred for brass piece that's worth 5 usa dollars in china

My engine light came on couple days ago at 47,000 miles. Bike same as always. Code read 117 and 118. Ordered new one but gonna double check wiring when installing. Hope this is it.

I have. 1997 Electra Glide been having same wanting to stall when engine is at operating temp. My sensor is located on front head on top under gas tank. Going to install today.

Did yours also knock around the lifters when it would warm up? I ask because mine does something similar, but she also has a concerningly audible knocking when shes warm. Shops keep telling me "huh, she seems fine" while other riders (one of which someone who builds monster Twins) tell me it's bad and NOT TO RIDE IT.

In the process of the season falling to its death, did you have weird spitting and sputtering issues? Irregular rpms when coming to stop? Been fighting those issues on my 2013 streetglide for about 2 months now. No check engine so it's whooping my ass.

Yes. Sputtering when when coming to a stop. Even sputtering when I hit the throttle.

@@crankysalt yes, it was the engine temperature sensor, it ran 100% better after I installed part. Mine would start fine, idle fine then when engine got hot after five miles or so it would want to stall out at first stop light. Idle in neutral would be all over the place, up down…..

I have a question if anyone still sees this. I have a 2015 Harley street glide special. My bike runs great. But when u start slowing down an coming to a stop. Thats when mine wants to.die. i have to continue giving fuel. Or it will die.. an its a real pain. It not throwing that code. I have it at a mechanic now. An he says he cant figure out why its doing this. If it was this sensor. Wouldnt a decent mechanic be able to figure that out? If it was a temp sensor?

My rocker is doing this, no check engine light. Starts up fine then dies I have 4 pending codes map IAC crank and spark dies every time you come to a stop. changed all sensors crank map and iac, I just purchased the ETSensor I really hope this is the problem bike's only got 12000 miles on it.

Yes. Check engine light came on when warmed up. Not when the engine was cold.

Just loosened it up a little with wrench or crescent wrench then unscrewed it rest of way by hand. Don’t over tighten.

Put a wrench or socket in that sucker and break it loose then until you can unscrew it by hand. Brass is soft though. Don’t round it off or ur screwed

Took off the horn bracket, tried a cpl different wrenches then finished it by hand.

I have a 2014 Trike in the morning my bike will start. I will ride about 5 miles, get off for two hours come back and my bike won’t start. What I have to do is put the bike in neutral then use my left hand to hit the start button and my right hand for the throttle. When the bike start up real loud and then I ride it. When I get to a stop sign or light, I have to keep revving the motor so it won’t stop. I take it to two dealers and they don’t know what it is. One dealer says it might be because you have digital gauges and you have dual exhaust. I am not a mechanic, yet I know my bike, and that is not the problem. Could somebody please help me, Biker in distress.
