That looks like a rebuild from when I was a kid! Almost 70 now, started with basket cases about 14, didn't make one actually run until 16/17 years old. Some great times being a kid, no knowledge just best guess, borrowed tools, gaskets made from cereal boxes, parts from wherever. 🤣 Thanks for the flash back.

I appreciate this! Do you still have bikes now Rusty?

84-93 that's how Harley installed the studs because the cases were milled thin enough that torquing with lip facing down would sometimes crack the case's.

84-91 are renown for cracking at the oil journal feed right above the cam chest - You cant comp those early engines up to much either, 92-99 are good to go!

I call those rebuilds "keggers"..as in how many kegs of beer were consumed during assembly.

Prior to '94 the studs were fitted that way from the factory - also they used a softer head bolt which would stretch somewhat, look for CP forged into the head of the bolt, and swap them for for the later part number revisions.

so thats why the gaskets leaked ...........................

What's your thoughts on the S&S reed valve breather?
@sfcustomcycles9 ай бұрын
Definitely the way to go - Ultima offer a breather also at a fraction of the cost of S&S

Ask Harley, they used to install them that direction in the early motors. 😂

Somebody should never be allowed inside motors again! I was turning wrenches as shovels went out and evo's came in, that issue with the cylinder studs was a factory error back in the nineties, when Harley was having all kinds of problems with such studs. I can't believe someone who "knew what they were doing" assembled that crank, probably the worst I've seen, rollers fitted too tight, no excuse for that at all.
@sfcustomcycles9 ай бұрын
I bet you’ve seen it all bud! That crank has its own story! If only you could feel how sharp lipped the brass shims were, very very bad. I’ll do an assembly video very soon 🤙🏼
