New for 2021, the Harley Pan America is an attempt by Harley Davidson to cut into the ever blossoming, but increasingly competitive Adventure Bike market. Can the Harley Davidson Pan America compete with the likes of the BMW R1250GS, KTM 1290 Super Adventure, Ducati Multistrada, Honda Africa Twin, or Triumph Tiger 1200?
A huge thanks to Guildford Harley Davidson for the loan of their demo for this vid.

Thanks for the review. A few things you may have missed. The seat is also a just able. You will get better milage in different modes. I thought the fairing did a great job blocking the wind. Stopped the helmet buffering really well. The price is less than the GS. Being here in America, BMW dealerships are few and far between. Harley Davidson dealers are a lot more plentiful over here. So service is a less worry. Don't get me wrong the GS is a amazing motorcycle. The Pan America has a good skid plate and crash bars are already on the bike. Like you I have a. Hard time with the kick stand, but I think I would get used to it. Also with the Harley tradition the motor will perform some better after it's broke in. Same with the breaks. The front forks have a different feel but again after getting used to the bike it should come to you. Just a few thing I found with the bike and just my thoughts about it. Anyway thanks for sharing your opinion. Till next time. Ride safe and have fun. Billy...

This was one of the best videos I’ve seen this year, loved LCR coming out for a pillion bimble. It’s never to be knocked as loads of bikes I’ve looked at immediately my pillion just says why?!? Before we’ve even left the dealer and Chops ain’t small, so it must have decent leg length. Something that stopped me buying the KTM (my pillion is 5”9 albeit I’m only 5”11) anyway I’m rambling - really enjoyed that watch!

Hey Piers, do you still have the Pan, and if so, how has it been, or what did you find you didn't like so much? I had a chain let go on me years ago, and went to a diff, haven't missed the chain up keep one bit. Thanks in advance for your reply.
@piersdenney
@piersdenney Ай бұрын
@@colinm1325 hi. My PanAm is going great. I’ve had no major issues. The fuel pump went at about 5k miles and I had the exhaust heat shield break off. So the most common issues, both fixed under warranty. I’m at 15k miles on mine now and I still love it. That engine is a peach. Suspension is amazing too, so comfortable on long rides. I’ve done a couple of 500 and 800+ mile days. Likes and dislikes wise, I wish I could add the quick shift to mine, but I can’t. Side stand is a bit odd, but has to be because of ARH, so it’s worth it. Chain maintenance isn’t a big deal, if you just don’t stress over it. Muc-off cleaner and PJ-1 or maxima wax make it super simple. The front lean angle headlight is pretty cool and effective too. I think it’s a great bike. And it’s different, ie not a GS. In the US the dealer network is so big it does make service while on a trip easy, which isn’t the case for any other brand,not a huge issue, but still a factor.

Had a go on one yesterday. Did not like it at all. Front wheel steering damper to stiff at low speed. Left leg getting hot due to radiator fan blowing freely on the leg. Only feel of some power in the higher revs. Seem to be always running at least around the 5000 rpm to get some response. Not a big fan of the tft layout either. I don’t see why this bike gets such raving reviews

I rode it on Wednesday and thought it was a great bike, loads of power, smooth, and a small feeling bike when you are on it.. I agree the indicator was a pain and sitting in a queue of traffic for a few minutes showed that the seat would get very hot from the rear cylinder. Also that front brake felt a bit soft, even though I never felt like there wasn't enough stopping power the lever was less positive than my Explorer XCA. Its going to be a contender though.

Fun fact best PanAm to get if you are tall and you gonna do 50/50 road/off road riding is the non special version with spoke wheels. The manual suspension gives you biggest ground clearance. Ps the big engine guard is also a must (your test bike had it on) because of the rectifier position right behind the front wheel. But all it all I think HD build a grate bike amd for the price it makes alot of sense. Look vise I like it it looks utilitarian like a pickup truck and I'm happy that HD didn't copied everyone else.

Love this bike, side on it’s a looker and okay the front end is a bit Marmite but again it looks as though it’ll offer good weather protection. V Twin power and it goes like stink, electronics and suspension are all there. If it can handle you and chops it must be pretty good. The unknown of course is it’s reliability and I know nothing about HD dealers, but a test ride could be on the cards - Great Review Bruce enjoyed it👍

I rode it too. I didn't ride the special though. I am 6'5, 34" inseam, 20 stone. I found the seat to peg distance tight for me and the windscreen way insufficient. I was getting way too much wind at speed. Yes the seat and the windscreen were in the high position. My ride is a 2009 RT and the PA is a bit lighter and in rain mode the PA reminds me of a torquey version of my RT. In sport mode it has the beans though and moves very well. I am an outlier ergonomically and I admit that. I didn't do the test ride through a dealer and I asked about lowering the pegs and the staff said not, only up. In the end, I didn't fall in love with it, didn't look back at it after the ride. About the telelever vs forks, yes. I prefer the telelever. My RT isn't as nimble, but tracks like on rails and no dive unless you have to panic stop real hard. If HD makes a sport tourer with this engine and it has better wind protection, I'll take another look.

I work at a HD dealership. I have to say that the plastics on the front fairing and the hand guards feel flimsy compared to the Triumph Tiger. The windshield could be more reinforced as well. I also do not like the ignition placement on the side. It should be up near the other controls for convenience.

For me, it still wouldn't win any style awards. I'm not keen on that Bender from Futurama front fairing and headlight. There are some really nice touches like the automatic height suspension etc and the price is pretty competitive (for a Harley, they're normally damned expensive). I'm sure they will sell quite a few to folks looking for something a bit different from the norm. You can only hope that HD listens to feedback and with a 22, or 23 version comes out with a quickshifter, uprated suspension and just attends to the little things that matter. As you say, not a bad effort for a first try! (Great, honest review as usual Bruce!)

Lovely job... I found the brakes a little sharper then the BMW and did not really notice the dive. Though I guess we are very different riders, I tend to get the braking done early so would not notice the issues of turning in as you found. But have to agree it's a great looking bike "in the flesh" it's very very close to my 2021 GS.... But lacks the icing on the cake, and indeed Harley missing the quick shifter/auto blipper is a mistake. But one hell of a bike and what a first attempt.... C U Tomorrow.

Thanks, I was searching my brain for some comparison, and you are spot on - the one with the headlight.

A very enjoyable adventure! I look forward to taking one for a ride. In my opinion it's a handsome enough bike from the right hand side but looks like an untidy jumble of wires and tubes from the left side. A mesh grill would tidy it up and keep mischeivous hands out.

A couple of reasons - hydraulic valves and ARH for height impaired riders.

@@robertsilva4501 the GS has two seat positions and a low chassis option so not sure how much the ride height thing is of value? No idea what hydraulic valves are … do they improve the bike somehow?

@@robertsilva4501 The GS is comfy, carries luggage perfectly, maintenance free shaft drive, sorted boxer twin, a million aftermarket parts, telelever suspension, quick shifter… oh and rock solid residuals with a vast dealer network and of course doesn’t have a front end that looks like a 1970’s Hoover 😳👍😁

Have you ridden the Moto Guzzi v85? Feels like a closer competitor to this as an adv with a 'rawer' feel than the GS's approach. Would like to see you give it a bash if you get the chance, it often gets overlooked when people list the category.

V85 is not in this class though … way way less powerful and much cheaper. Lovely bike mind.. had one myself but it’s underpowered in this company for sure 👍
