Ever since I traded my Iron 883 in for the new Harley Dyna Low Rider S, I"ve noticed a change to my right leg. That change? Well... it gets HOT! Which makes sense, seeing as a bigger engine produces more heat.

________
Erick mentioned a time or two that I should start paying attention to my temps, especially while in traffic, so I started keeping an eye on my head temps via the sensor readout on the FP3 app (link above.)
After noticing the temps did seem high, I went ahead and purchased the oil temperature dipstick as well. It's an awesome way to check the level of your oil without removing the dipstick, and it also monitors the temperature. Great addition to the bike!
Which leads up to some cool news! I reached out to a company called 'Love Jugs,' a Harley engine cooling solution, and they agreed to work with me! The temps that they're able to bring a Harley down to are impressive, so I figured it'd be good to have a comparison video of what my temps were before, vs what my temps will be after adding Love-Jugs to the bike. I'll have an install and comparison vid for you all soon for that, as well as a code to enter at their website!
As always, thanks for tuning in all! Be sure to Like / Comment / Subscribe!
Till next time, you all ride safe out there, & stay vigilant!
Deuces!

I have a 2016 Fatboy S, enable and disable EITMS with FP3. You can also roll the throttle forward for 3sec. ( ignition turned on, engine not running ) enable and disable EITMS. Your cruise control light indicates on or off ( green on amber off ). It does help, I also have been monitoring my engine temp via. FP3. EITMS activates at about 285-290. Engine will sound different and the exhaust fumes will smell funny.

Long-time Honda Shadow Sabre 1100 owner. After just one test-drive, I can't WAIT to get a H-D with a Twin-Cam engine! It rattled, vibrated, shook, roared and VROOMED! I figure with "Love Jugs", I can reduce temps. With the Screaming Eagle/Cam chain tensioner upgrade kit, I'll also add 25% more oil. Some day, some day. :)

Twin Cams run very hot, one needs a rear cylinder heat shield to protect against the heat output. This is primarily due to the stock oiling system and the stock, sticking oil pressure relief valve located in the cam support plate.

Love jugs really work! got the Mighty Mites for my 08 Street Bob. Riding in slow city traffic my oil temps never got over 239 farenheit. And this is on a hot 90 farenheit day. Without them, the engine runs to 284 while the bike is moving slowly. At a long stop the EITMS kicks in.

Totally different kind of heat. What works in the desert doesn't work in the southeaster United States. I've been to the desert and thought "Man this is nice!" aside from making sure to drink plenty of water, and keeping your skin protected from the sun it's not that big a deal. In MS when it's 98 better find a A/C or a shade tree and hope there is a breeze blowing because your body can't cool itself no matter how much water you drink. That said I wouldn't trade it for living in a giant cloud of sand whenever the wind blows.

Marvel's mystery oil in the gas will reduce head temps about 6 degree's. Not to mention do a bunch of other good stuff. I run it in everything from lawn mowers, to my bikes air cooled or not especially if they have a carb, and my truck. A old Harley guy who had been riding them all his life told me if you don't want to rebuild the top end 3 times before you have to do the bottom end, run Marvel's in the gas. I've never actually owned a Harley but I did grow up in a Harley family...guess me not riding a Harley makes me a rebel? lol I ran it in a old Honda XR650L I had and it made a big difference. I could tell because my oil lasted longer because the engine was running cooler. I also realized I wasn't having to clean the carb after it sat for a few months in winter. So now I put that stuff in everything I own that takes gas. I also run it in my trucks oil but anybody who has a 5.4L Ford will know what that's about.

Your engine has a function that disables one of the cylinders when your bike is running at idle just like the new Milwauke 8 engines have. You can access it with a Supertuner Pro. Not sure if you can do it with the FP3 though, you'd have to check.

If these bikes need an after market fan then it says the engineers did a poor job designing the engine. This is not the case as I have ridden hundreds of Harleys over the years and been around hundreds more and have never once seen one have problems with overheating. Harley guys by Nature tend to be tinkers they never seem to be content and I believe a lot of this cooling fan issue is someone overthinking and wanting to be busy fixing a problem that doesn't even exist. If you or anyone have had overheating issue feel free to tell me about it, I am interested

Heat Is Caused By 2 Things the First is when your in heavy traffic no air is moving over the motor The 2nd is the Factory is forced to tune the engine Very lean to conform with EPA rules a lean burn creates much more heat. On a bike with a Carb. this is an easy fix Just re jet EFI bikes need a tuner or a Flash. Add an oil Cooler (with a fan) and or an engine Fan kit. The oil cooler without a fan will only help when the bike is moving. With this you should have no problem maintaining 200 Deg oil temp

I just traded a 2007 ultra classic in because of head on rear getting over 400 degrees in summer. Shake and bake. This was measured with infrared temp gun at spark plugs. Front head was always about 100 degrees cooler, of course. So what did I do? Traded it for an Indian Roadmaster of course. We'll see how it does. I will know in about a year how good/bad Indian is.

Not a criticism but an observation okay? I notice, after watching your entire video, that you shift at about 2,500 rpm and generally lope around 2000-2100 rpm while riding around your area. You down shift at about 1800 when you want to get up a go a bit. I've always tried to keep the rpm up at about 2700 when riding around town so; I don't have to down shift, I don't build up carbon and fowl the plugs and I keep the oil pressure are high as I can in the very hot weather. I think you might do a bit of research and you may find you could do your bike a favour in the long run by upping your revs about 400-500 rpm. Your bike will love you for it. Nice bike btw!

@alessandrov-twin9755

That's what I was thinking....the other day we were monitoring temps on an Iron 883 via a pyrometer on the heads and it showed around the same temps you're mentioning here. Bottom line is, 45 degree air-cooled v-twins run hot, it's just the nature of the beast; bigger engines produce more heat but all 45 degree v-twins are designed on a similar basis, they're designed to tolerate heat within it's particular displacement range. So an 883 v-twin could run as hot as a 96 incher v-twin however both are designed to tolerate heat according to their specs. It's the design that get these engines into high temps not necessarily their displacement, they all will get to similar temps but they will tolerate the heat as long as they're within specs. As I stated early, all 45 degree v-twins are designed on a regular similar basis, obviously there are major details that differ from engine to engine depending on the displacement......you can't expect a 96 incher to last with exactly the same design as an 883 or a 1200 (I.E. the cylinder's and head's cooling fins size).....in the same way you can't expect an 883 or 1200 to last by having the same engine components from a big twin (I.E. using a big twin head on little 1200 sportster). It all comes down to the design.... but that's what we love about the 45 degree air cooled motors ain't we? the design!!!....Harley motors, at least the pure air cooled v-twins, are muscle car engine's version of motorcycles, with lots of torque and that hot-rod roaring that no other motorcycle can give you. So due to their design most v-twins run at similar operating temperatures, but as long as every particular v-twin run within its own specs, it will tolerate the heat, as that "heat toleration" is part of that very same design.

Good on you for sportin' safer gear while riding. Can't go wrong with protection from road rash, etc. Not always easy to wear in the heat and humidity. Amen. But I think wearing a helmet or not wearing a helmet should definitely be a choice left to the rider. A report years ago said every death in NASCAR during a certain ten-year stretch was due to basal skull fracture/hangman's noose analogy. This means the force of impact sustained to the front of the helmet directed that force through the rigid bar and through the chin strap which drove the lower jaw bone into the spinal cord severing or injuring enough nerves to cause all kinds of signals to vital organs to be disconnected. The report was done some years after Dale Earnhardt, Sr. died in a crash at Daytona in 2001 and a lot of misinformation surrounded his death like seat belt failure. No. It was basal skull fracture. Unfortunately Dale didn't like to use those early HAAS-type devices which limited the impact force to the head with a special shoulder device connected to the helmet. Another issue with helmets is they often limit one's peripheral vision to an angle less than what's needed to pass the vision test at the Dept. Motor Vehicle. And that's with a helmet in compliance DOT regulations. So if someone were to take the vision test wearing a DOT approved helmet one would probably fail the peripheral part of the vision test. As well, DOT reg has a requirement for certain impact ratings which amounts to collisions in parking lots about a combined force at 13mph. The majority of collisions happen on the road at much greater combined impact speeds. I think average impact speeds are somewhere around 35mph. And 80% of accidents between cars and motorcycles are the car driver's fault who was waiting to make a left turn and who didn't see a motorcyclist coming straight through the intersection and who had right of way. And not to mention the reduction in sound a full face helmet creates, and how a person's head warms up being fully enclosed. The extra heat causes more fatigue compared to not wearing a helmet. As well, statistics were misused creating a false sense of hospitalization costs to tax payers due to injuries sustained by those not wearing helmets. A report cites even if an unhelmeted motorcyclist who was involved in a crash and had most of their own hospitalization costs covered by private insurance ... even if 0.01% portion of their hospitalization cost was picked up by the "public"; the entire cost of that person's hospitalization was included in a false report swaying congress to pass mandatory helmet laws based on exhorbanent costs for tax payers to provide care to unhelmeted motorcyclists. The report was a lie. Bottom line: you give up something to get something. Not wearing a helmet you have increased chance for other kinds of non-lethal head injuries and abrasions compared to helmeted riders who risk a higher chance of a catastrophic impact to the face if they choose to wear a helmet with full rigid chin bar. Helmets without the rigid chin bar can be a safer choice in this respect. You might be surprised how much damage an unhelmeted person's head can sustain and who will live to see another day. The skull is designed to deform and break up allowing the brain to avoid catastrophic trauma. Just like modern cars have used this principal to allow people to walk away from seemingly catastrophic collisions. I say: Let those who ride decide. Peace of Lord Jesus upon you and yours.

just to let you know there is two different oil temps, one is at oil tank and other important temp is at rod and crank and other friction areas in the bike, what you read at oil tank you can add 40 to 60 degrees more at rod and crank including other friction area. Maximum oil temp is around 375 to 400 after you over heat the oil, maximum temp goes down to maybe 300 degree and each time you over heat the oil you lose maximum temp.

All the sales guys at harley advised me to stay away from the lowrider S because of how hot the engine gets... They all said the same thing about long rides, how the engine gets unbearably hot. :( Went with a street bob.

Yeah, sales guys at Harley are fucking super genius engineers. You definitely did well by listening to their advice. You dodged a bullet by not buying cruiser of the year. The FXDLS is such a piece of shit they discounted it after two years and then dumped the entire Dyna range. Don't listen to everyone that actually owns them and loves them. Listen to the dipshits that work at Harley for $12/hr.

I love watching people faces and reactions every time i suit up for a ride during summer in S.Florida. They look at me like I'm doing a suicide mission. LMAO. Never gets old. The squid thing never gets old, I almost made a pancake out of one learning how to wheely on Okeechobee Road before the Turnpike on a brand new R1-M while wearing a $600 replica helmet and Puma snickers, NO BOOTS, NO GLOVES, NO JACKET, no common sense. According to the rest of the country there's no such thing as cold weather or winter in S.Florida, regardless, i wear a perforated black leather jacket at ALL TIMES and mesh Icon Hooligan pants. When it gets " really fresh" I have multi layered gear just for that. I could use heated grips tho. If i were to ride on daily nasty traffic like that at the beginning of your video I would be riding a scooter, not an air cooled stove.

b warren I ride a street Bob and one of the mirrors has the blinker attached to the bottom. So I can't just flip it upside down. I thought the low rider was the same, so I thought it was some kind of kit
