You know, Tony. In the two years or more that I’ve been watching KZbin videos on electronics, yours and others, this is the fist time I can remember someone injecting a signal to troubleshoot a circuit. I’ve learned a lot from this (older) series. I like a lot of the aspects of the Harmon Kardon design, but the ‘build quality’ is killing my enthusiasm. I really admire your persistence; I’m sure a professional, for whom time is money, might refuse the work, or quit once the investment exceeded the unit’s value. I’m like you, I’ll follow a problem to the bitter end. I don’t much money for my effort, but I reap a great deal of satisfaction. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

One of the main reasons I love your KZbin channel Tony is because you include your mistakes (which we all fall victim to, including myself). Thank You for your candor in sharing your adventures with us. Now that I am on the topic of xraytonyb, you have become my favorite vintage audio gear restoration channel on KZbin. Thank You Tony for continuing to show us "real life" problems and your excellent troubleshooting skills, as we watch you work through them. I firmly believe that we learn the most from our errors. Awesome video and as always sir, Awesome work Tony! Fred

I learned to inspect re-flowed solder joints with a magnifying glass. It has saved me a lot of time on several occasions.

Learn stuff from your channel with every video you publish. Given the semi-lock down/working from home situation the last 13 months I found out that I got interested in vintage amplifiers and then that I wanted to take on the challenge of repairing and restoring broken ones. Can honestly say that your explanations and structured way of doing troubleshooting and telling about experiences has made me not to fear even when I know I don’t grasp everything about it when it comes to all this amplifier goodness.

Reminded of the old Danny Kaye Movie, The Court Jester: The chalice with the palace has the pellets that are poison, while the flagon with the dragon has the brew that is true.

I'm just a love machine ripoff. How does that not cause a hit? GREAT VIDEO! Yes, practical troubleshooting. It is funny because the whole time my gut was saying bad solder joint somewhere.

Great video series, but it is also provides a basic argument in favor of building a system from a collection of separates; each box dedicated to a single function.

Did you test that capacitive loading switch on the phono? Is it as simple as measuring the capacitance between the positive and negative of each channel?

I was thinking that in new DSP based integrated HIFI amplifiers everything is done through selecting which dual channel ADC is selected then through the DSP processing processors then dumping the processed signal to the PWM output stage

How do you know where you can safely inject a signal, and where you can't?

When you started injecting a signal you said " relatively low amplitude" about 300mV maybe please ?...cheers

Just goes to prove that the journey is always better than the destination... Unless you are referring to all the work that was put into getting that cute little blonde back in 1978!!!! Well that's a different story for another day LoL 😂... But generally the rule holds true..

looks like an amp to avoid. all these convoluted signal paths must severely effect sound quality.

Funny ...If you started to diagnose the circuit from the front-end (switch) instead of the back-end (riaa amp) you would have found the problem child sooner. I always suspect those those cheap tiny switches. In this case it wasn't even the switch but the hacked up solder-job that someone left there.
@xraytonyb

More likely, if I had started at the front-end, then the problem would have been somewhere else. Murphy's law ;)
