I live in the middle east, I can right now point at over a hundred objects in my house that are not native to the culture I'm from. my mom, for an instance, has all kinds of English tea, Turkish and French coffee. if I go to a grocery store I can grab a random item and be 80% sure it's not native to my country. these people are living in a bubble of their own delusion.

These people simply want characters to be good and bad depending on their skin shade: the darker, the gooder, the whiter the eviler. Which makes watching the stuff they do very boring and predictable. It's not deep at all, it's literally the Family Guy airport skin tone meme.

It‘s such a weird cognitive dissonance for me to see Asians specifically pretending they have no representations in media, when the Asian media industry is so goddamn huge and does easily compete in quality in various sectors with Western media (I like a bunch of South Korean film directors myself). The only good faith explanation for this to me is that these people are completely clueless and simply don‘t care about Asian media at all - which would be insanely funny.

20:03 You have no idea how many Hispanic friends I had growing up who looked nothing like their siblings. Knew a Puerto Rico girl who was almost white, her brother looked like he worked in the sun on his farm in Pakistan. Basically every Hispanic family I knew had shockingly white kids and inexplicably dark kids, and that's just the way it is. What am I even watching? Did these people grow up in the culture they say they grew up in? 80% of my elementary school classmates, and 90% of my professors were Hispanic, my textbooks were in Spanish. Bill Nye was in Spanish. I think I'm going to defer to the literal doctoral graduates from central and south America who were teaching us about Hispanic culture more than an HR pity hire who's whole experience with Hispanic culture consists of corn-based food, Abuela's chancla, and wondering which uncle is going to get too friendly at their quinceañera.

What’s interesting about this video is that they forget gaming is a worldwide thing. Same thing happens in the movie. Of course they would take into the account the american market where a huge part of the money is but they forget the whole world consumes their stories. So it’s not a matter of just putting the american POV onto things and that’s ok, because not everyone in the world either wants to see that or identifies with that. And it’s crazy being from outside of the first world because you ended up watching growing up shows from everywhere, and not a single moment passed through my head where I thought whoa I wish that character was from here.

I'm sorry, but such a niche community is not an authority on terms and has no right to impose their definitions on a wider community, especially when we know that the Latin American community actually hates terms like this.

the pattern seems to be a sliding scale from Asian to Dark-Skinned. The more Asian a character is, the more it is offensive to stereotype because Asian stereotypes aren't cool. Asian characters need to blend into the common culture as much as possible. Then, the more Dark-Skinned you are, the more you should stereotype because Dark-Skinned people need to be explicitly distinct from the regular American culture. In short: Asians should signify how not foreign they are, whereas Black and Brown people need to show how not American they are.

Shouldnt the correct take on this be "you do you, but don't involve yourself in my media" like you can make all the new concepts and media icons that you want but don't touch pre stablished ones. I think that's the best way to go about it. I doubt we would reach a point where we are all woke and diverse no?

“Because of their demented consumption of social media.” Are you saying that social media is demented, that it is at a certain critical mass, that a certain type is and will change your accent somehow, or was that some supposed to be some synonym for large size/amount?

WAIT! Not including a character's race/culture as an integral part of the story means things like Seven Samurai, Harakiri or Anthropoid could not exist. All films very heavily dependant on their cultures. (Intentionally chose films not focused on America because people like that do not understand that America has a culture.)

42:10 forty minutes in and Tim only now realises that this entire thing is just a display of american cultural ignorance. No, having your own country's flag everywhere is not normal. Usually only extremely proud nationalists do that in other countries, but its all over the US.
