I deconverted from Christianity at 38 years old. I’m now 45. I’ve been an “angry” atheist ever since. How anyone can see what Christianity does especially now in the US and not be angry is beyond me. From COVID (denial of the virus and the vaccine based on religious reasons) to transgender and homosexual bigotry, to denial of science and pushing their religion into schools and politics. Need I go on???

It might be dangerous to bifurcate everything. “If religious people don’t buy the government explanation of the virus therefore I will”, that type of thing.

So you went from believing religious "experts", to believing science "experts." Hopefully your next step is critical thinking and not believing what you're told as though it was gospel. Good luck.

@@capitalisa no I accept propositions that are backed by evidence and are verifiable. You’re confusing religion and science. Science is based on the scientific method not doctrine or dogma. Conflating science with religion is a desperate attempt to justify faith.

Another fascinating interview. Thank you both. I'm not sure why I'm drawn to your channel Tim - I came across it by accident, but have listened to most of the interviews on it now. I think the work you are doing is so important, most importantly for those who need support as they question long held beliefs and need to know they'll be ok when they come out the other side! But also because fundamentalist religious belief is a social problem as well as a personal problem. It shows a complete inability to think critically, to deal with ambiguity, to question authority, and to accept what can't be known or controlled about this world we all live in. The power Christian fundamentalists appear to have over political and social discourse in America is very frightening to me. Their tactics of brainwashing their children is no different to what Islamic and Jewish fundamentalists do. Sowing hatred of others in the young is truly wicked in my view. So thank you for what you are doing to bring attention to the damage fundamentalists cause.

After reading 'The God Delusion' I stepped right over the line I toed into atheism. This was one of my favorite interviews on your channel Tim. So much good stuff to check out! Kudos Will, you've got a very good, connected, but intellectual grasp that is extremely relatable and easy to listen to.

The God Delusion changed everything for me. I read it about 15 years ago when I was still Christian as a challenge to my faith. It took me ten more years to finally give up the ghost-but I finally did. I’m a happy atheist today- never looking back!

A real eye opener is a book called "The Devils Pulpit" by Rev. Robert Taylor. Another tool in your belt on the origins of christianity.

How can God (and you know the one I'm talking about) have a personality without ever being a real person with a known childhood ? Did god have no friends to talk him out of blowing his ass up in the big bang ? It makes sense to me that Gawwwwwd must've been a clumsy doofus.

Yes, and as Valerie Tarico explains that emotions are tools for people to motivate them into action. Love, anger, jealousy, disappointment, fear,, love etc motivates us to action so we survive. Why would a god have emotions? A god wouldn’t need to be motivated to action by emotions since he doesn’t need to be motivated and would be above emotions. Nonsense

1:10:00 ish : Sounds like the writers of the NTs were a bunch of Joseph Smiths, copying all other religious traditions & other literature... badly combined (in Greek) with visions & magic. A Catholic perspective of Protestants is on a spectrum range; probably perceive Anglicans (Episcopalians) & Lutherans as lighter & easier than Catholics, all others as harder with their Church & Bible bashing... to various burning degrees generally speaking, IMHO as a non believing Catholic background antipodian Melbournian.

Thank you; I never thought of it that way. Joseph Smith simply honed his creative skills by mimicking the authors of the NT.

Hell: No such word was in their vocabulary, and they knew of no such place. No word with the meaning that the English word Hell has now was used or known about unto long after the Bible. It is not in Greek literature in New Testament times or before, first-century writers did not use it, Josephus or any other historian of that time did not use it, it is not in the Septuagint. A place where God will torment the lost forever after the Judgment Day was not known about. the concept of the place called hell, or the name hell is not in the bible, and does not occur in any writing of either the Hebrews or the Greeks until long after the Bible. The Old Testament Hebrew, or the New Testament Greek, has no word that is even close to today’s English word “hell.” How do we know about this place called hell? Where did hell come from? It is not in the Bible. Neither is the name “hell” in the Bible. Where did it come from? Not by faith that comes by hearing God’s word. It is from the doctrines and precepts of men [Matthew 15:9]. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. It was not used in the first century because it was a word that was not in their vocabulary, and a place they know nothing about. (William Robert West, If the Soul or Spirit Is Immortal, There Can Be No Resurrection from the Dead, Third Edition, originally published as The Resurrection and Immortality [Bloomington, IN: Author House, September 2006] p. 138.)

I know what you mean but when he was talking about that I don't think he meant that this is what he believes but rather pointing it out as what was originally believed (i.e. that hell was not eternal/forever).
