Whoever put this music into Civilisation IV has probably done more for the cause of 'modern' music than anyone else in the last 30 years.

@@KeithOtisEdwards Thanks for sharing! Hearing John Adams conduct Oslo Philharmonic will allways be one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life. But Harmonilehre has a special place in my heart, maybe because I've heard it a thousand time while playing Civ.

I will never get bored of this piece and performance. It's just absolutely sublime. I first came across John Adams' work from the video game Civilization IV, where his compositions are used (to great effect) to underscore the modern era of the game. It's just hypnotic and unique and gives me so much pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the upload.

This is a gorgeous composition and the performance is exquisite. The octave leaps in the Third Movement beggar speech. The availability of so many wonderful performances on this platform throughout the Pandemic has figuratively been for those sheltering in place a form of medicine not requiring a prescription.

It would be useful to know what orchestra is performing this piece. All I see is a large number of east Asian faces. I recognize Edo de Waart having seen him conduct the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the Opera House in 1995 when I was visiting Australia. And, of course, he conducted the premiere recording of this piece with the San Francisco Symphony in the mid-1980's.

Edo deW was music director of the Hong Kong Phil from 2004 - 2012. My guess is that the orchestra is the HK Phil.

Which orchestra is this? At the very LEAST they should be mentioned! They’re better than the conductor who gets lost and forgets to give cues, has his head buried in the score and doesn’t even give the last note of the first movement! The players of this orchestra are so good that one might not even notice de Waart’s errors (unless one knows the music and is used to watching conductors)… The orchestra was unflustered and completely together, despite his vagaries and (the conductor’s) inability to keep track of the score…

Without associating myself to the criticism of the conductor (I can't really judge, but after all, he has premiered several works by Adams -including this very one in 1985 - who clearly trusts him) I agree that it is outrageous that the orchestra is not mentioned.
