Andy, the use of chatGPT is a concern that has circulated among admission officers. One of the statements that applicants will need to check in the near future in their application is that they wrote their essays. While I agree with your proposed use to serve as another editor "friend" or "mentor", essays and openings need to sound as the applicant's journey. Perhaps, you could elaborate in a future video. Happy to chat or zoom at some point. Just got your $10 bundle yesterday. As NIH grant reviewer, it is hard to read a truly bad grant, but it will be harder to dissect out the style to the bone of the logic. I think that would make it more opinionated. Great job, mate! Now, we are going to have Bard and other tools...

Very good, I am getting a lot of ideas from your channel. I came across another interesting idea. I wrote a 10 page report with a one page single spaced executive summary. I’ll let chat GPT make a brief paragraph summary. It did a very good job. This occurred to me. If you put your executive summary or your introduction into chat GPT, to summarize, and chat GPT comes out as a garbled, confusing mess, it probably means that your human page of writing is not nearly as lucid as you hoped it was.

If I am going to recruit a student based on their personal persuasive statement, I will accept the one who had written less persuasive or even a factual one of their own effort and make rather than the one written by ChatGPT. If a person is masking their lack of motivation or ability to make efforts in persuading others, educators and them will have an issue along the way. Of course, unless they keep eating ChatGPT for breakfast, lunch and dinner to always show persuasive! I still value genuine thoughts and efforts, unless the aim is just ticking the admission boxes to enter a course, no matter what!

Well, I recommend the grant reviewers try something revolutionary such as look at the pure factual and leave the emotions on the side. As soon as someone appeals to emotions in a grant it should be put under extensive scrutiny before considered further.
@ni54392 жыл бұрын
Asking a human to be purely analytical and leave emotions aside is impossible. You can see plenty of scientific debates that, although based on science, still have some emotional thinking on both sides.
@sciencefliestothemoon23052 жыл бұрын
@@ni5439 Doubtful, and if one is so succeptible to such obvious manipulation than one should not be a grant application reviewer. Regarding scientific discussions, most are not very scientif but agenda driven and agendas are often not science but money driven.
@ni54392 жыл бұрын
@@sciencefliestothemoon2305 People are not robots. It's hard to ignore part of the brain mechanism, even if you think you are being objective, there's always some sort of bias involved. And the emotions can play a role in that small bias. You can try to rationalize and analyze those emotions to reduce their impact on your choices, but that will always come after you already felt them No. I'm talking about scientific debates involving the fundamentals of how the world works. For example, continental drift is a relatively new model that had a lot of debate. And still to this day some senior scientists haven't fully abandoned the old models they studied or researched when they were young. There's no secret agenda in that, just people who most likely got emotionally attached to an old paradigm.

Just yesterday I've used ChatGPT to edit an entire scientific article... English is not the first language for me or my colleagues, and the article they wrote was quite badly written... Like one of the reviewers said "It was very hard for me to read the manuscript as the grammar problem often changed the meaning conveyed in the sentences." I used a seed prompt that I think was good enough for this kind of editing... We went through the entire article paragraph by paragraph... It produced very well-written and grammatically correct text... There were a couple of funny moments... Like, it usually just gave me rewritten text, but one time it said that "the paragraph doesn't seem to have any grammatical errors"... Unexpected... Then in one case it decided to move one of the sentences to the end of the paragraph... I thought "hmmm, i wonder why it did that"... Then I thought "wait, I can just ask"... So I asked, and it explained how it was more logical that way and that it tied in the facts in the paragraph together... And that was correct... And when we were editing the Results section of the article, I entered the next paragraph, and it said that it seems that the paragraph doesn't present any results, but rather just gives background information on the topic, and that it should probably be moved somewhere else.

Thank you for demonstrating the re versing ability of ChatGPT. This is a function I could see it being a big help in trying to get one's writing style changed to where one was not thinking. I do think it will lead to generic sounding sentencing when in some situations the core idea is still not quite developed. I tried ChatGPT as a substitute for Google search with the trick question "What causes global warming?" It returned the United Nation's IPCC response. The correct answer was "The cause of global warming is not know." So much for AI for now, but maybe it can help a bit with some word smithing.

What an amazing potential this tech has. I love it, well apart from the PhD application. I know this flowery language is supposed to evoke positive emotions but it just wants to make me throw up. For something like that application I like to imagine the actual human having a conversation with me and saying these exact words. I'd feel so weirded out, because this is not how a normal person would speak, unless they're full of crap and trying to cover it by using fancy and persuasively distracting language. But I guess that's fitting since the AI was asked to write in the style of a politician. Their speeches are notorious for being 20 minutes long and not saying anything of substance.

Tbh I'm not convinced. The first revision is much lengthier than the original, and those grant abstracts have stringent word limits. The repetition of "necessary" and "need" leads to a logical fallacy and lost me. It makes so many unsupported claims that my bs detector went in the red. I find the original more convincing and the second one dangerously blabla-y and PR-y - the kind that doesn't have a place in science. It breaks the first rule of Strunk & White: omit needless words. I think really the best way to improve a text is to show it to your colleagues.
