Liberians claim that they were not colonized. Can someone from Liberia explain to me why then you use American names like Maryland instead of using your own African names.
@yomrap6931

The freed Africans who returned built those places they came from so some named their new towns after them like Maryland, Virginia.or Mississippi but it wasn't colonized. Groups formed in the States to return Africans home but they were private societies. Countries colonize other nations like France w/ Ivory coast. If Liberia was colonized by America they wouldn't have allowed France to take portions of Land in the south east for Ivory coast. Read up more on it if you're truly interested.

The names come from the history of Liberia, the first Country in Africa to receive free slaves from America. So many of the free slaves came with the names of the places they came from in the United States Liberia and America have so many names in common. Maryland, Mississippi, Greenville, Virginia, Caldwell, New Georgia, Louisiana, etc. All of the names represent where Free slaves came from to settle in Liberia.

@@emmanuelykortu well there are many British colonies that don’t name their towns after British names. Those slaves you are talking about originated from Africa. Abandon American names and use your indigenous or native names

Liberia was colonized by the white Americans, nobody should lie to that Liberia was not colonized. Those who say such thing lack knowledge about Liberia and their reasoning skills are very poor. Please read on the American Colonization society. 90 percent of Liberians don't know their history.
