A bit of history for you. Confederate General A. P. Hill's Corps completed a "speed" march from Harper's Ferry, and at arriving at Sharpsburg (Antietam battlefield), pitched his corps into Burnside's troops which had just broken across the "Burnside" bridge and had a clear line of site to Lee's headquarters. You probably took the route his men took. If you ever want to do a wild and wonderful weekend of hitting the big Civil War battlefields, count me in...offer my limited tour guide skills. We rode up to Gettysburg from Tennessee last year and had a blast. It's awesome riding through the parks because you can ride up next to the roadside monuments...and parking is super easy :-)

Those are my stomping grounds. It was nice to see so many familiar places captured on video on such a gorgeous weather day. That side road that connects to Rt 340 is called Chestnut Hill Rd. Also across the Potomac River from Maryland Heights is Loudoun Heights. It’s an 8 mile hike from Harpers Ferry but not as crowded. Anyhow, thanks for the video!

Was down there 3 years ago around this time on my old Versys 1000. Harpers Ferry, Antietam moving north to Gettysburg then crossing back to Canada at Niagara Falls hopping the Chi-Cheemaun ferry across Lake Huron working my way back to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. I really loved the area and enjoyed American history on the Civil War. Also stayed in Rockville MD catching the train into DC checking out your capital for a few days. Thanks for posting, brought back great memories as I slave at work!!

The hike up to Maryland heights if I have the correct name is a mild workout but when I did some 15 years ago there were places to stop and rest. Make the effort as the view will take your breath away! Miss the area, I lived in Lovettsville,VA

People bash Smarts too hard. XD They are fun little cars, and surprisingly quick and nimble! I used to have one until I decided that I needed something a little bit more versatile for things like travelling and such. If I lived in a city though, I would definitely have kept it. They are the most spacious cars I have ever been in, and don't even feel small at all when you are driving one. I love them!

This is awesome! I live about 15 minutes from here, in Maryland. I come down and drive through here a lot when I just want to have a nice relaxing cruise. I desperately wish that I had a motorcycle though...I feel like all of these amazing back roads I have found would be so enjoyable on a motorcycle! Maybe some day haha. As of right now, the insurance is far too expensive for me, and I don't even know much of the process for getting one. XD Sucks, but yeah, hopefully I will get to experience riding a motorcycle around one day.

Great video as always Mario, love the drone shots for a broad perspective. Next time, do the hike, (bring some gear), as none of us are getting any younger & need all the exercise we can get! I know you get lots riding dirt bikes etc., but you may feel even more energized for the ride home!

Somewhere I have a photo of my Bonnie next to the "Welcome to West Virginia" sign along old Rt.9 on that mountain, I think it's from my first ride to Seneca Rocks. Alternating windscreens? (Noticed you had the stock one on for your preview video of the weekend route.) BTW, while John Denver may have popularized "Country Roads", I'm pretty sure he didn't write that one; I forget the name of the couple who did the song "Afternoon Delight" (before your time, mid-70's), I believe they wrote it (pretty sure they recorded it too), if I'm not mistaken they were from northern Virginia. I remember going across the bridge from Sharpsburg into WV on a Memorial Day weekend trip once, there's a cemetery near the bridge with a number of Confederate soldiers' graves (from Antietam), they were each decorated with miniature Confederate flags, which I thought quite appropriate. Since then some politically-correct asshole put a stop to that practice.

Filmed before I got the new one. Travel/ride videos don't necessarily come out in order.
@triumphrider97965 жыл бұрын
After I wrote that I figured that might be the case. The song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" was written by Bill and Taffy Danoff, but Denver's recording may be the original recording of it.

It was the lead singer from The Starland Vocal Band who wrote that song for the most part. I heard on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast that the dude had barely ever been in West Virginia, and he wrote it while he lived in San Francisco. Which is why there are geography problems in the lyrics. By the way, if you want to go down a click hole, the Starland Vocal Band had a network TV variety show for some reason...it's awful and co-stars a young David Letterman. And a lot of the episodes are on KZbin.
