I usually prefer piano to harpsichord for Bach, but this is a terrific recording. The playing is lively and vibrant, and the sound of this particular harpischord is beautiful.

I agree! It's really wonderful. This recording is for me much better than every recording on the modern piano. I can tell that Bach wrote exactly for this instrument

Amazing performance. I wonder why Bach especially named the English Suites by this name? is it according to a specific style?
@mattshum13503 жыл бұрын
I think this wasn't Bach title, the first publisher used this name to distinguish them from the French suites. Musically these pieces are more extensive than the French suites, and all of them feature an introductory overture.

Bach didn't call them "English Suites." He called them "Suites with Preludes." Stylistically, they are French and Italian. The prelude in the F-major suite is reminiscent of the North German style. The preludes in the other suites follow the Italian concerto grosso style. Bach never published these suites in print. They were distributed in hand copies made by his students and members of the Bach circle. However, it seems that the suites might have been referred to as "English" by Bach's family, friends and inner circle, for reasons that are not clear. Johann Christian Bach, the so-called London Bach and Bach's youngest son, wrote on a manuscript in his possession, “Fait pour les Anglois” ("Made for the English"). Forkel claimed the suites were called "English" because "an Englishman of high rank" commissioned them. Such a commission is unlikely for several reasons: (1) there's no dedication as would have been customary at the time, (2) Bach composed the suites over a period of years, and (3) during the years he composed them, he was fully employed by the co-reigning dukes of Saxe-Weimar, who, by law, would have owned everything Bach composed during his employment. It may have been that these suites were inspired by Bach’s study of the six harpsichord suites by Charles Dieupart, a French composer who worked in London at the time. Bach copied out those six suites sometime between 1709 and 1714, and he used one of Dieupart’s gigues as the model for the Prelude of the first "English" Suite.
