I had the distinct honor of sitting with Willie this weekend at the Doo Wop finale. I told him of my affection for this song. And how Raul Ceta had gifted them with timing and articulation that sets the song apart.. He seemed moved by my words, said I did not know how much they meant...Willie we all cherish you and the gift the Harptones weave in this and other spiritually centered lyrics ..Thank You Willie, we''ll all meet again

Yeah, but "don't" actually sounds better than "can't", so I'll give that to Willie. But the entire song doesn't make sense. Why would God allow the storm to destroy all the houses in the town but not the shrine? What message does that send? The heck with your house and belongings,, you can always come to church complain about your fate. Really makes sense, no?

Ha, yes--I fully agree with you, the lyrics do not stand up to a rational world view, that's for sure. You may know that the song was originally a Swedish song "Min Soldat" with different lyrics in Swedish (sung by woman in love with soldier stationed away from her in Sweden) unencumbered by religious symbolism and more about romance, ironically like most doo-wop.

The HARPTONES my favorite Doo Wop R&B group of all-time. Love this song ( done so close to original 1950's release). WILLIE AND RAUL names will be remembered in history like Fats (Domino) and Dave (barthow.).... Bobby (lester) and Harvey (Fugua) of Moonglows...
