From rare nesting harpy eagles to chittering white-faced capuchins, the sights and sounds of this remote jungle are like nothing you've ever seen. I've just returned from Canopy Camp, an eco-camp right at the heart of this remarkable rainforest.

Darien National Park
Located in the infamous Darién Gap, a jungle so dense it stopped the Pan-American Highway in its tracks, this region is one of the wildest places on the planet and one of the best places to watch the myriad, and colourful, species of both Central and South America.
Eco Camp paradise
The wealth of wildlife to enjoy here is something the owners of Canopy Camp understand all too well. This eco-camp, where wildlife is encouraged to wander past the lodges - bananas are left out for the Geoffroy's tamarins to scoff and guides are on hand to take you into the swampy lowlands to see eagles - was my base for a few days as I explored the wetlands and jungle to film the fauna. Soak up the sounds of the jungle as you watch this snapshot of the amazing bird and wildlife of panama. See whooping motmots, long-billed starthroats, collard aracari, slaty-tailed trogon, lineated woodpeckers, black vultures, king vultures, grey-cheeked nunlets, black-cheeked woodpeckers (they were hilarious to watch), a roadside hawk, rufous-tailed jacamar, and, something I really enjoyed seeing after my close studies of common kingfishers, American pygmy kingfishers.

Panama truly is the jewel of Central America, as well as the Hong Kong of Latinoamerica. (Both are nicknames far and wide used to describe Panama). I lived there for most of my life, from age 12 to 49. What a perfect place to grow up in, marry, and raise my family, nowhere better imho! And I have lived abroad in quite a few places including Shanghai, Hangzhou(China), plus travelled to Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela etc. Caribbean islands; the UK, Amsterdam, France, etc. Nada como mi 🇵🇦!

Holiday 😃 yes very much a working holiday we were up at 5am every day out filming and each evening sorting through footage so 18 hours a day was the standard and we took 9 bags of heavy equipment between 3 of us my body is broken knee back shoulders neck ankles I need a holiday to recover 🤣 Having said that I wouldn’t know what to do on a relaxing holiday I have tried it and find it very stressful I keep thinking what I could have done Like more filming 🦥🐸🦜🦅

Yes, Darien Rainforest is great, I too stayed at Canopy and had the pleasure in going around with the same bird guide! It seems as they (canopy) have found a new harpy eagle nest, because in Sept 2019 when I was there, we had to walk into the bush and the nest was pretty high up in the tree. Thanks for sharing!
