Harrawala: A Second Model Ward for Waste Management in Dehradun!

Our second model ward is coming along really well in Dehradun! Our goal was to transform Ward 97, Harrawala, into a model for the effective adoption of best practices for solid waste management (SWM).
With an estimated 1700 households and around 300 commercial shops in Harrawala, a system needed to be put in place that helped educate the community on segregation of waste at source and proper processing of all recyclable waste. By engaging residents and focusing regular segregated collection and responsible disposal, we changed the way hundreds of individuals, families, and businesses in the ward think about their waste, recycling, and the environment.
After one year of these sustained efforts, we are proud to share that 94% households are giving their waste to our collection vehicles, reducing dumping/burning from 27% to 5%. The source segregation went from 57% to 84% and 38% homes are now trying to compost, reducing the burden on collection work and city landfill.
This initiative is supported by the Lal Family Foundation, and in collaboration with Dehradun Municipal Corporation.
We are grateful for the support of UNDP India in partnership with Coca-Cola India under their PRITHVI program, for the Material Recovery Facility seen in this video. This is Uttarakhand's first such facility for dry waste management, with a focus on plastic waste.

My father used to bring me to Dehradun every year during school vacations as Dehradun is my hometown. Everything around my house then was lush green and i could call Dehradun a "Pahadi Ilaka" but in 10 years everything has changed and my heart pains when i see "Nehar's" are now "nali", lush green forest areas are now residential plots. People overall are so ignorant and irresponsible towards to environment here, it just pains to see Dehradun change so much in just 10 years. Waste warriors in one of the organisations that we desperately need and want for sustain.

I have a humble request from waste warriors. Visit the area near Maharana Pratap Sports college and look at the condition there, people have let the sewage pipes flow in the government built waterways (nehars) and no one is talking or complaining about it. The same water is going to people's farms. Also, the are is full of waste spread all around the areas near the college, one can't walk past without smelling it. I don't know if you are the right organization to ask for help in this but if you can do anything please do.

Thank you for bringing this up, yes that area is very dirty, we have been there and seen the conditions, the area is in desperate need of solid waste management attention. We will try our best to bring this to the attention of the Nagar Nigam to find a collective solution.
