Another great video Pete. A mugged pheasant in the bag is worth 2 in the bush 😊. Thanks Pete for the time you put into these videos.

Once again a brilliant episode pal thank you. I agree with you that hh are very underestimated and if given the time and work they become excellent falconry birds. Also think I'm biased, having plenty of fun with my girl, she's 5 now and working really well.

I'd say an ounce higher is nothing to worry about, especially during the long cold nights when the temperature is cold. I can easily predict that you'd have little to no problem hunting with Woody the next day after he ate a good portion of that pheasant. And hopefully you aren't taking 2 days off, but rather you are just walking with Woody on the glove instead of flying him. This way you can keep his daily hunting routine going. Its always the thought that counts! It was so cool watching Woody fly right in front of your face at 14:35! I'd say his loyalty is there! It proves that flying a hawk daily really pays off!
@freebirdofreason1994Ай бұрын
Thanks Jeremy, Woody is out most days as you know, if we don’t fly he will still be out on the fist and in the garden. He is doing well and occasionally it’s probably good to have a chill out I guess. rest those muscles like an athlete.

I watch all your videos. Very professionally produced. This is the first time i have responded having only recently registered an account. You have inspired me as a beginner (starting last season with my 16 week old female Harris hawk Jessie) and we are now in our second season of hunting. Its great that i can relate my experiences to those of someone else and being retired too so in a similar position. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for commenting and great to hear you are doing well . Alway like to read encouraging comments especially this one as you have retired and enjoying your falconry. I wish you great success. Good luck 👍 Thanks for watching and commenting.

Personally I believe that the time of day that you are out with your Hawk, hunting, should be taken into consideration. My tiercel Redtail for instance will be slow to respond early in the day but comes alive later in the day especially getting close to dusk. Consequently if I know that I am going out hunting early the next day then I will drop his weight by 25/30gms, about an ounce in old money. His hunting weight is 980gms about 2lbs 2ozs however he is still reasonably disciplined at 1040gms about 2lbs 4.5ozs, which I refer to as his flying weight,.At these weights he gets thru 3 chicks or the equivalent a day which will keep him at the same weight for the following day. Also Pete my sincere condolences for your recent loss. All the best to your family and hunting team.

Pete's crew never let's us down for entertainment. A quick question for you Pete. What way do you attach your jesses to your Swivel, it seems nice and fast compered to my slow fumbling. Great video as usual Petr, thank you.
@freebirdofreason1994Ай бұрын
@@kilakila992kilakila2 Thanks appreciate the encouragement. I attach the swivel direct to the Jesse's no extender, not everyone's idea but works for me. If you mean whilst hunting that's different, a lobster claw direct to flying Jesse's👍

Enjoyed the vid, all the tips and knowledge, recently watched Dave's video on Hawks and the cold due to collect my first HH in dec , wondered if you've got any more advice for the colder months , preparing to keep her indoors overnight if temp is very cold especially during first couple of weeks as dont want her tethered low in the very cold .( until shes used to the perch etc)
@freebirdofreason1994Ай бұрын
Dave did cover that well, if you are able to keep in doors that’s good. I’d say freezing cold drafts if in the mews. Mine is fairly sealed during the cold, if weathering out as the daylight goes be aware of damp feathers. They can take the cold but need to be dry, and free from freezing drafts, and have a good mews. I hope you get on ok I’m sure you will enjoy it.

I’m tempted to say the Harris hawk is the opposite of a beginner’s bird cos let’s say you get a Harris as a first bird. You muddle through and have a great time for a year or two. You never really learn the fine tuning of weight management or manning or trading off etc because a Harris will forgive you for f’ing up. So you go a year or two THINKING you are doing everything perfectly and then you get a gos or a peregrine or whatever and suddenly you’re blinkers are ripped off as the bird disappears over the horizon or foots you all the time etc. I think if you get a gos or a peregrine as a first bird you’ll be FORCED to learn and do things properly and then when you get a Harris you can really get the best out of it
@freebirdofreason1994Ай бұрын
@@kevinduffield626 Great comment, that's well said. They will certainly give a false impression compared to some other species 👍
