I have an African Grey parrot named Waldo. I always loved this song and used to sing it often. He learned the song and would sing " Dayo Dayo daylight come and I wanna go" ,refusing to say HOME at the end. We would hear him sing and say 'home' Waldo HOME! This went on for about 3 months. One day, myself and my 3 daughters were in the room with him. He sang the song with a loud HOME and a HAHA at the end. One of my daughters said " he knew it all along!" Obviously he was having fun with us. He never sang it again! He is 32 years old now and continues to be our little lovable comedian.

A had an African grey once too. They are smart and have a sense of humor. Sam liked to teach me new whistling tunes, repeating them until I got it right. But was less interested in learning the tunes I whistled, Teased the dog when he was bored. Enjoy Waldo.

Rest in Peace Harry Belafonte. The world will miss everything about you, your music, charm, acting, activism and your charisma. Thank you for all the wonderful music we all grew up with and you never forgot your Jamaican roots. I met you once on one of your trips to Jamaica, I was a young boy then, I never forgot the few seconds when I was singing the banana song and you joined in. You will live forever in my heart and mind. God bless you Harry. Gone too soon. R.I.P. Harry Belafonte. ❤

From the small mountain district of Aboukir Harry Belafonte’s parents made their way to Harlem where he was born. But the cultural roots of his Jamaican ancestral homeland flowed rich and thick in his soul and he brought the music of the Caribbean islands to the world. His many talents equipped him well to do so. Rest In Peace Harry. You fulfilled your mission on earth.

I was born in Ecuador and my paternal family came from the province of Esmeraldas, in the northern part of the country, near the Colombian border, and, like a great majority of the province’s population, were Afro-Ecuadorian. My great grandma had the calypso album as one of her most prized possessions. I loved to listen to the haunting vocals of this beautiful song even though I had no idea what they said. Once I moved to the states and found out who the man in the cover of the album was, the entire extent of his work for all working people in America and the Caribbean, I understood why I loved his voice and his songs instinctively. What a great, brave, and courageous man. Go on home, brother! Daylight has come and your job is well done. Thank you for all you did!

His work as a Civil Rights Activist with Charlton Heston, Burt Lancaster, Sidney Poiner, Sammy Davies Jr and Marlon Brando to help Dr Martin Luther King (And the Late Rep. John Lewis) get the support for President Lyndon Johnson to pass the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of 1964 and 1965 respectively to end Racial Segregation and give the African American people full Citizenship ensured by the Right to Vote, there's problems caused by the refusal of the Republican Party to reaffirm the Voting Rights Act which could led to Voter Suppression Laws that would affect the Poorest Americans (President Biden wants to widen the protections afforded by the original Voting Rights Act to cover other Minority Groups that might be affected by Voter Suppression Legislation)....RIP Harry Belafonte and all of the Heroes of the Civil Rights Era

Yes, the song is great. The first time I remember having heard it was in the cabin of a cruise ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm in the autumn of 2006. There was this one channel in the ship's inner network (not a public radio station) which automatically played all sorts of different oldies 24 hours a day. This classic song was one of those. I had turned the lights off and lay down on the bed, listening to the music, half asleep, and fell immediately in love with the Latin rhythms and sounds. As well as the voice of Mr. Belafonte, of course. Thank you, Harry.

As today is a sad day for the passing of this great icon of culture and political militancy in the USA, R.I.P. Harry Belafonte, and with his entire life story, which ranges from dedication to activism in favor of the rights of people of African origin in the USA to his career in music and cinema. The reference of the song and the movie Beetlejuice is well known in several places outside the USA for the charisma of the character, here in Brazil the title of the film was translated into Portuguese as Os Fantasmas se Divertem , an iconic film of the culture of cinema, however, also here in Brazil, when I heard this song, I immediately remembered an advertising campaign for a brand of gum called bubbaloo when bubbaloo gum with banana flavor was launched, look it up on KZbin and you should find the version of this song for the advertising campaign for this gum , was very funny and was very successful in the 90s here in Brazil.

Harry Belafonte, Almanac, 18 February 1954. It is a call and response work song, from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. Maybe a bit weird but 23 year old kid here😁. I have known the song first before the artist, grandad used to play it on his record player and asked me to set it as his mobile phone ringtone, I only known Harry Belafonte sang this cause the majority of the artists in USA for Africa sang this song after they perfected the chorus (NETFLIX). I got to know him when I was 15 cause my class toggled the Racial Inequality and the start of the battle of Dr. King, Malcolm X among others for equal rights in the US. Thank you for the music and of course thank you for inspiring the world to help a country in need.
