Harry is what the Yiddish call a mensch, "A person of integrity, morality, dignity, with a sense of what is right and responsible."

53 years old and still makes me sad. Dad wasn’t there for me in my youth. Now I have a 4 year old and I work so hard to be part of his life and best parent I can

I pray God will bless you with peace. My dad wasn’t around t much but I love him. He was doing the best he could with what he had. I feel regrets about the kind of father I was/am to my sons (now grown) but I finally forgave myself and realize that I did the best with what I had at the time. I hope to be a better grandfather than I was a father.

I was lucky enough to have my dad home nights and weekends. Unfortunately, I was always gone. Up at 4:30am back home between 7-9 pm. 6 days a week. Had to put food o the table roof over their head. You all know the deal.

The man was a great poet, as a father of three sons when I get caught up in things I play this . It straightens out your priorities, life's to short. Thank you Harry.

A few years ago a friend of mine mentioned this song, and praised it, saying it was very rare to find a popular song about a healthy parent/child relationship. I asked her, "Are you thinking of the right song?" She said, "Yes, the boy wants so desperately to be like his dad and then his dad sees that he succeeded. What could be sweeter?" I told her to listen closely to the words next time and she might see what she was missing. I'm not sure she ever got it.

Indeed, the lyrics are heart wrenching. They remind me of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino.

I love this song, and I never knew what it was about. I was told recently "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", I was like "what does that mean", English is literally my second language, the person said "well, it's like that song, the cats in the cradle song", I said "what do you mean", the person said "listen to the lyrics". I have recently listened to them, and now I understand, I am just like my Dad, luckily for me my Dad was a good man, but I have taken after many of his bad traits too (the smoking and the drinking). The takaway is, that our fathers are the biggest influence's on us, and we should be careful what we expose our kids too. My Daughter is 7 years old, and I want her to inherent all my good traits, and I will always keep an open to what she might take after.

This is definitely a timelessly popular English song. I heard it for the first time in an English language class in China 10 years ago and now much has changed in China but I didn’t change and I still like the song and the bond of family.

Isn't just this the truth? We never have enough time for the people we truely care about because we always think that they'll be there forever. The older we get, the more we realise the error of that statement. One day, the people we care about aren't there anymore and we wish with all our hearts that they were

I read that his guitar was broken on the way into the Grammy’s by a young man who was trying to help Harry during a rainstorm. The guitar got caught in a door and was crushed. I’m guessing that’s why Harry is playing what looks to be a borrowed guitar for this performance.

I wish I were old enough to have attended one of his concerts. I’ve always said this about the singer/songwriters of the 70s; there were some great ones: Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, etc. But none of them could tell a story through song quite like Harry Chapin.

It's not the drummer, is the orchestra conductor. They didn't have earpieces or decent stage monitors back then and as always the orchestra is supposed to follow and rely on the maestro for timing and cues. Even the strings at the beginning were noticeably off beat. I've had gigs like this where I could barely hear the vocals and it's a nightmare for drums lol My bet is that they struggled with timing during rehearsal too so that's what Harry was referring to and hoping to soften the critiques with his Rolls Royce engine in a flat-bed truck comment.
