In a Tonight Show interview, Harry Chapin said that he originally wanted to attend the US Air Force Academy. That was where he was going to learn to fly. Harry was a great storyteller. Treat yourself by listening to any of the songs already suggested by others below. "A Better Place To Be" will make you cry. "Flowers Are Red" will touch you as a Mom. "I Wanna Learn A Love Song" is just a little naughty. "Tangled Up Puppet" is for those of us with daughters. I often sing "Mr. Tanner" in the shower or the car to exercise my voice because I feel like his alter ego.

Poor Harry - I met him in the same small venue (Stonehenge) in Massachusetts where I hung out at the bar (on different occasions) with an unknown Bonnie Raitt & Ry Cooder. Harry was kind, friendly & real..... Died in a traffic accident 10 years later (1981).

I've heard that a hundred times, at least, but I still can get lost in it. I was listening a few years ago, when he came to the line: "You know that waitress / she took her bar rag / and she wiped it across her eyes". I thought: "Waitress? Where'd she come from? Oh ... yeah ... right". I was so caught up in the story, I forgot the watchman was telling his story to the waitress!

Circles were a recurring theme in Harry’s music; he closed all of his shows with a song titled “Circle”; first verse: “I feel like I’ve been here before; Just can’t remember when. But I got this feeling That we’ll all be together again. There’s no straight lines Make up my life, And all the roads have bends; There’s no clear-cut beginning, And so far, no dead end.”

I saw HC play about 6 months before he died. There was a power outage before the show so his band sat around and played an "unplugged" set to the crowd of a few hundred. (Somebody brought in a bunch of cases of beer -- enough for everybody to have one.) Then the lights came on and they finished up with their mikes plugged in. After he did "Taxi" and then "Sequel," he joked he would probably write a third chapter in about 30 years which would end with them riding off to the retirement home -- or the funeral home.

The line "I thought about her as I sang that night and how the circle keeps rollin' around" is a reference to his other song "Circle" which he expresses his philosophy of life.

@ChrisB-xm3mg

In the first song, she had gone off to chase her dreams of being an actress. She had become an actress and married into wealth, but she wasn’t happy. He wanted to be a pilot but ended up settling for being a taxi driver. In the second song, he’s become a rockstar, and she’s giving up the wealth and fame of her acting career to go back to a life of much less means but she’s actually much happier with the way her life is going. So they initially were chasing dreams that turned out to be not what they really wanted, and in the end, they’ve achieved what they didn’t realize they truly wanted in the first place.

@india no, this is about trying to find what you had only to realize that it can never be again. Speaking from experience revisiting an old relationship is like read a book over again, you know how it ends. You can try to revisit, you can try to rewrite chapters, but in the end the story doesn't change. Too many times I've tried, every time the same results.

India, she was a kept woman on Park Lane. She was living the life as a rich mans woman. Finally he grew bored with her and he gave her the boot. She ends up aas a house keeper.. She finds herself because to her the life may not ful of riches, but it is an honest living. Remember she said she works at night. He wanted to give her money because he knew she could use it He knew she had pride so that is why he did not push her going to the concert. She as content with her life and She no longer could bare any more drama......................at least that is my take

** "TAXI" Original Manuscript. ** THE AUCTION ON THIS VERY-SPECIAL ITEM ENDS @ 7PM EST TONIGHT! (June 18th, 2020) - PRICELESS FOR ANY HARRY CHAPIN FAN. ---- It breaks my heart to have to part with it, but I am auctioning a special piece of history for any Harry Chapin fan -- a hand-annotated typed working draft of the lyrics for 'TAXI,' with Harry's changes written in ballpoint and pencil throughout the manuscript. It's also accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Sandy Chapin. As a huge fan of Harry and "Taxi" I've played the song hundreds of times during my live shows and purchased the manuscript from Harry's estate 5 years ago. The best part of the experience was getting to speak to Sandy Chapin. Priceless for any fan of the man himself. To see images and perhaps place a bid, click here: rrauction.com/preview_itemdetail.cfm?IN=9199 PS - This item was donated by Sandy Chapin solely to support Long Island Cares, a food bank that supplies 600 pantries and food kitchens with food and emergency relief. --- 100% of the proceeds from my winning bid of this item, when I originally obtained it, went to support Long Island Cares. rrauction.com/preview_itemdetail.cfm?IN=9199

I wish you had listened to part 1 before doing this reaction. Not only is there a continuation of the story, there are so many parallels between the two songs. One example, in Taxi, Sue says, "Harry, Keep the Change" In the Sequel, she says, "Harry, you're right" with the exact tone and emotion. Harry died tragically soon after Sequel, and had he not, he probably would have produced a third part. I learned about Taxi after I had first gotten to know Sequel, so I have a different reaction to those who think this song should never had been written.

I never knew that there was a sequel to Taxi. I do wish that there wasn't one. He did such a great job on the original he should have left it. As it was. Maybe he needed more money. I don't know but the quality is not what it was in the original. Sadly he died shortly thereafter another one in the prime of Life brought down. That was sad

Harry Chapin was a great humanitarian who gave 1/2 of all his earnings from 200 to 300 concerts a year to charity in an effort to eliminate hunger. ''Harry always said one concert for himself and one for the other guy. " He co-founded World Hunger Year, now called WhyHunger. After his death, Chapin's widow was quoted as saying, “Harry was supporting 17 relatives, 14 associations, seven foundations and 82 charities."
