The reason why Harry's butler waited until 2007 to explain the truth behind Norman's death was because he didn't realize until now that Peter and Harry's friendship was being threatened, and he was also afraid to tell him the truth, because he was worried how he would react when he found out that his father was the Green Goblin.

i think Harry reacted so minimally because, on some level, he knew his father was a monster the whole time. Deep down, he likely believed Peter's story about his dad killing himself. He just didnt want to admit to himself that Norman was a self destructive maniac, because doing so meant he would have to confront Norman's neglect of him too, which was far too painful for Harry to admit to himself.

From the appearance, James is perfect sunbright handsome, nice and pride at the same time, and Tobey more shy and lowkey. This scene always made me both sad and happy. You can see the immense guilt both Peter and Harry feel for hurting each other and I think most people have felt this way before or have gone through something similar, obviously not this convoluted, but like done something to hurt a friend or sibling that they regret. It’s what makes this scene brilliant and very emotional and the part where Bernard tells Harry the truth you feel a sense of relief, that he can now see Peter was right

My headcanon is that Bernard tried several times to tell Harry, but Harry would either not believe him or stop him. Then, when Peter tried to kill Harry with the symbiote, Harry realized “this isn’t Peter, something is wrong, he wouldn’t kill me…he couldn’t have killed my father.” There is a deleted scene of him looking at a picture of himself, Peter and MJ, which is where I think this thought process would’ve played out. I reckoned that Osborn being green goblin was released sometime post... like in Harry's death, they explained that his father was green goblin and the reason harry showed up on the same glider to die fighting Sandman and Venom was because he was trying to make amends for his father's mistakes. I remember that line from the first movie. He told Peter with his last breath not to tell Harry. If Peter told Harry what happened, it would’ve made things worse. It is probably true Norman told the butler not to tell Harry until when the time was right. Harry knew his dad was the green goblin but he didn’t know what happened and how he died and why. He blamed it on Spider-Man/Peter Parker because he saw Spider-Man put his dad on the couch in the dark and pinned it on Spider-Man. Harry was driven by revenge and wanted Spider-Man to pay for something he never did. He learned the truth from the butler and after refusing to help Spider-Man/Peter Parker against Sandman and Venom, it has made Harry feel bad blaming his best friend for something he didn’t do and he did the right thing to go help save MJ. Sad to see he died as a hero.

I get the feeling that they were going for a sort of 'ascended extra' moment where Bernard, who has basically meant nothing in this trilogy...steps up and has 'a moment' that is very important and pivotal. I don't think the final result gives the desired impact. I think it ends up feeling a bit more random and weird that this character who doesn't really mean much to the viewer all of a sudden has to hold Harry's hand and walk him to redemption. I think the Editor's Cut which make it Harry's choice just might be the better interpretation. I also think THIS scene really telegraphs Harry's decision, really spelling it out that he is going to come to the rescue. I think the small moment of Harry just looking at the picture, leaves it a bit more up in the air. It shows that he is making the decision, but is brief and ambiguous enough that you don't automatically assume he will help.

Harry already knew the truth, he just couldn't accept it. He was fighting his inner demons the whole time, regardless of how his dad died. Everyone including the butler knew this, so he had no reason to intervene early on. Peter even told him during their first fight. The butler telling him was nothing new. It just hit Harry differently coming from him, because the butler would rarely say or do anything besides tend to him. Once he saw it threatened Harry's life, was the only time to intervene. Obviously in movies certain logic is stretched, but this actually makes sense from a psychological standpoint. Not just a "they did it for the plot" moment.

This butler came out of nowhere (never seen him before) then reveals his wound was self inflicted. I guess he knows how to come to an autopsy level conclusion because..... lazy writing.

If Harry’s butler waited years to tell him this wasn’t a big enough plot hole already, in No Way Home, Sandman said that Goblin’s death was all over the news, and that the glider was the cause of it. If this was the case, Harry should’ve known all along.

Are you forgetting that Sandman lived in Spiderman 3,so he had no death to be sent back to face. I'm guessing Sandman was transported to the MCU after the events of the third movie.Meaning that with Harrys death it probably finally became public knowledge that father and son was the Green goblin.With the Osborn lineage basically extinct the police probably raided Harrys mansion and found all the evidence they needed.Plus under questioning im sure Bernard the butler told them any details they wanted to know.

As an adult, this scene is awful. The line "she needs us" is super powerful, but the reason it is super powerful is because the girl in question slept around and cheated on them with each other. Also, and even worse, the fact that the wounds were made by the glider doesn't say anything. Like, what's more likely: you being mortally hit with your own weapon or your enemy taking your weapon and killing you with it...????

It had many things going on that weren't well developed, the guy behind Venom was a whinny, so, hard to look at him as an antagonist, Venom the less developed character, he died as the guy behind that, in a non-impressive way. The Dark Spiderman moments have sense, based on how the personality of Peter was, so when he was with Venom, instead of creating a very evil version of himself, it created at times a goofy version of himself, if someone doesn't understand that, they think the whole scene is out of place and that's also a reason why people don't like this movie, only when he pushed Mary Jane is when you realize that thing was making him become evil. Movie is entertaining, but, that's it, it's flawed in different parts. They tried to show a conflicted Mary Jane that her personal life and dreams weren't going well, but, the result felt more like she was only being egocentric and selfish.

because at that time he had no idea how Harry would react to hearing that his father practically killed himself, I mean it's bad enough harry already lost his father and thought spiderman killed him, if he was told that his father killed himself with his own glider it would have destroyed harry's psychological mental health and he would most likely deteriorate as a person becoming even more twisted than his father, timing is everything when telling someone about sensitive information otherwise you create more problems than you solved.

The dude was so bloodthirsty to kill Spiderman that if it wasn't Peter he would have stabbed the motherfucker to death without mercy. Harry wasn't ready to listen or hear reason while he drank himself nearly to death trying to find Spiderman. Peter tried telling him at the beginning of the movie and couldn't because he refused to want to hear it? but at that time when Bernard realized what was happening he realized that moment was a now-or-never situation. As I said timing is everything.

A proper butler wouldn't have felt it was their place to say something especially how shocking it would be to find out your father was a psychopathic murderer. Also, to keep in perspective, at the moment Peter places Norman's lifeless body on the bed, Harry doesn't know his father was the Goblin. All he knows his Spider-man killed his father without any context or knowledge of the situation. At first, the idea of avenging his father's murder didn't come easy. If you remember he resisted the voice of his father in his head. It wasn't until he found the secret room it became clear to him what happened. Presumably, once Harry started taking the formula, his mind was warped like his father. The very knowledge of his father's identity doesn't deter him from wanting revenge on Spider-man. As far as Harry's concerned Peter killed his father... not Spider-man killing the Goblin. So, yes, I agree with you that if Bernard had said something right up front, it most likely wouldn't have quelled Harry's rage.

@@Valaso-Osalav After rewatching this clip, I also got through thinking, on what level, if any, did Bernard assist Norman in his endeavors of being the Goblin. He apparently has knowledge of the glider and its blade. Obviously, with all of Norman's goblin tech around the house he had to, at the very least know, and possibly on some level helped him like Alfred helped Bruce Wayne. Especially, the "I've seen things in this house line" which implies he's had far more knowledge than he's spoken about. He quite have possibly pledged confidentiality to Norman to not even say anything to Harry. It was obvious, Norman didn't want Harry to know he was the Goblin. In fact, his dying words to Peter was "Don't tell Harry". Just some food for thought

Honestly I kinda like the retcon made in No Way Home that Goblin’s death was known citywide, it implies that Harry was simply in denial of the truth about his father for many years despite Peter trying to convince him, and finally when the butler gave him the speech about loving his friends his hatred subsided. It would explain why the butler never said anything.

Had the butler told the truth to Harry and everyone from the start: 1) Harry would be in denial, would never accept it and would still blame and hate Spider-Man (who he didn't know was Peter) anyway. Harry would also fire the butler. 2) Norman would be revealed to the public as the Green Gobelin, ruining his image, ruining the reputation of Oscorp (which made the Green Gobelin equipment), likely terminating the company. Harry would be even more in rage and denial, thinking that Spider-Man was using his father as a scapegoat. 3) Harry would maybe be a paria too, and without his father and the company he founded, both gone and their reputation in ruin. He would be broke and have nothing to lose, thus even more likely to dive headfirst into his revenge obsession against Spider-Man. There is no way Harry would have believed the butler. To Harry, it was better to believe his father was an innocent murdered by a masked man than his father was a crazy mass killer who got killed against the city's vigilent when trying to murder again. The truth was exposed to Harry when he discovered the Green Gobelin's arsenal behind Norman's living room = Norman was the Green Gobelin and was killed in a fight with Spider-Man during his attack on the bridge when he tried again to murder people (the Green Gobelin never reappeared again after Norman's death, which happened during the same night of Gobelin's attack on the bridge). Yet, Harry still went ahead with his vengeance because he was in denial.

Okay but one thing I never understood about this is how did Harry not know? I mean he found all the goblins equipment in his own house, most of the goblins targets were people who wronged or opposed his father, and when his dad died the goblin also died. Also, if spiderman actually murdered him, why would he bring his body home? The only answer I can think of is that maybe Harry actually did know, and was just so upset about everything that he didn't care that his dad was in the wrong. And maybe hearing Bernard say it all out loud enabled him to see it from a less vengeful perspective. However, that means that Harry would've also known that his dad almost killed he and MJ at the festival and probably should've seen it differently. Either way, the whole thing has some holes in it.
