Great, great song. Many people just know it because of "Lego Batman" and "Venom 2". Others knew the Aimee Mann version in the Oscar-winner film "Magnolia". But most of people, like me, knew the Three Dog Night version that became a rock classic. But this original recording by his creator, Harry Nilsson, is the best of them all. The telephone busy signal inspired Harry to compose the song, and the monotone keyboard part that opens the theme evocates it.

Harry Nilsson was such a prolific songwriter, so many songs in pop culture people have heard are written by him. The quality of his songwriting is insane.
@jessejohanni2 жыл бұрын
While I might generally agree, there are some things to consider: - You generally hear the songwriters version first, and that becomes the base version that imprints the first impression of the song in your mind. - If you know who the writer is, you might tend to think that his/her version is the "correct" one. So what we need is a blind test with, let's say 100 original versions + covers, and a few 100 people who don't know the songs (or at least don't know who the songwriters are that can listen and judge the different versions!). :)

Congratulations, I guess. Not becoming addicted to drugs is always good. But then so is experimenting and taking some risks in life. It really depends on who you are and what you want out of this short existence we humans have here on this planet. There is no "one size fits all" answer to what to do with one's life. Or what to do with the rest of the life you do have. Boredom can be good. Although, usually that's after an over excited youth spent taking risks and getting in and out of jams. I would also differentiate between risks worth taking and dangerous, life ending- pointless risks. There's a big difference between smoking pot and shooting heroin. The difference is in your personality.
@dionmcgee56105 жыл бұрын
Nilsson was a song writing phenomenon back in the late 60s'. I was a child and used to watch his musical cartoon 'The Point' once every year. Couldn't wait for it to come around again the next year for almost a decade, I think. Music still holds up today with it's catchy tunes and philosophical musings. Became good friends with the Beatles, especially john and Ringo. Partied hard. Partied too hard. Ringo got sober, Nilsson didn't make it. RIP.

So did I. Him and Lennon were good friends. Only heard this in the film Magnolia when Tom cruise plays himself.

This woud be the perfect theme for the upcoming stranger things season, probably focussing more on One's character development and experience in the upside down

One of the few standards that deserve to be. Lyrics are whimsical but emotive; the melody and setting not overdone. The delivery with a touch of Schmilsson schmaltz. Such a voice too - along with Phil Ochs, also lost far too young.

HARRY NILSSON WAS A GENIUS ..for his vocal range, his orchestration, his lyrics, his "soul"... This was acknowledged by the Beatles, among others... Elementary schools should simply teach a course called.... "Nilsson's Opera". < the word opera is, in Latin, the plural of opus,.. which means "works". I play his works daily. jack barry.

Harry thought this song up while listening to the busy signal on his girlfriends phone line back in the day. Anyone else remember those old land lines? Lol. And the party line with our neighbors. Seems like a million years ago.
