This song to me is about self-acceptance and being free to be who you really are. “Lights up and they know who you are do you know who you are?” to me means that when you’re in the spotlight everyone thinks they know who you are but do YOU know who you are? Everyone thinks they know the real you but are you really that person? ''It'd be so sweet if things just stayed the same, la da da da dah''. That could mean that of course If everything stayed the same it wouldn’t be as complicated. But he needed to grow, he needed to take risks and fight for what he wants. For freedom, for happiness. ''All the lights couldn't put out the dark running through my heart'' is a very interesting lyric to me. It’s like no matter how famous and rich you are, there’s always this part that nothing can fulfill. Like despite all the great and positive aspects of life, he’ll always have that dark place/feelings inside. No matter how happy he looks on the outside there’s also sadness on the inside. Obviously there are lots of other lyrics to interpret and everyone can interpret them differently. I just love how thought-provoking both the lyrics and the music video are. Other than the lyrics there are also the scenes where he’s drenched and alone in a room, a scene were he’s on the back of a motorcycle not holding on to anything, a scene where he’s surrounded by semi-naked people touching him everywhere, and this scene where he’s in the water (I imagine it being the dark place he mentally goes to). So much to think about regarding every single one of those scenes.

5:37 I think some people interpreted it as the Harry in the water being his past self (the one from the self titled era), and the one hanging above being the new Harry. He kinda drowned his old self and is looking back? Idk Harry never explains stuff, we just come up with our own interpretations.

to me, this song is about searching for freedom and finding change regardless of the opinions of others. whether that specifically relates to sexuality or if it’s written from his perspective, is something we don't clearly know about (although it would make sense since this was released on the national coming out day and with the whole undertone of this mv) the scene you talked at is assumed to be him lookng at his past coonfused self, he's in the water (just like in his HS1 album cover) i think the person in the motorcycle represents someone that he's going through this with, someone who understands his struggles and is there for him. it'd be great if you can react to the Adore You mv next ( the extended edition) 💜x

The Fine Line album is about the highs, lows of his relationships. Relationships with whom? That's up for debate. IMHO, Lights Up could be about coming out but it could also be about the end of codependent relationships that did not allow him to shine the way he could. He begs the person to stay because he doesn't want things to change. One could interpret the verses as a convo between someone or himself. Step into the light! Do you know who you are without the shadow of this relationship(s)? Stand on your own, find out who you are. Much love 💚💛.

He's happy and it's all that matters.

@@gunjanagrawal2297 I totally agree with you! A lot of Harry's qualities are what made me fall in love with him and his personality. And some of his fans are so toxic and disrespectful towards him. They're selfish and don't care what makes him happy, only what makes them happy. He deserves a lot better from his fandom. People read way too much into what he says and doesn’t say. I think its as simple as him sincerely wanting all his fans to feel included and loved and free to be who they are when they listen to his music and go to his shows. It’s clear he is a true ally to the LBGTQIA+ community and appearing ambiguous and refusing to speak on his personal life is a way to show his support.

He was very vague about that, as usuall, when it comes to explaining his music. But in other context he said that the whole album is a way of self-reflection, trying to understand what success is about. The image at 5:09 is all about that imo. It's like the representation of the whole song (or even album). I don't take it as a coming out vid or even as a queebaiting thing (not that I'm in any right to say). For me it's about the downfalls of being an artist, that this comes with being in the spotlight, not having much privacy, being judged, harrassed and mobbed (cuz it's 1D's largest issue during the band activity and Harry suffered from that the most). That you don't get just to make music, you need to take the whole package and accept it or drop it once and for all.

So glad to see you reacting to Harry again. Love all your reactions. I think you were right on about the cinematography of this video. It’s really different from all of his others. I love the song and the vibe and I feel like it’s almost Harry wrestling with who he really is. Do you know who you are? Almost asking himself. This video includes him dressed in Larry blue in a room alone, staring at himself in the mirror and kind of moving around the room like he doesn’t know exactly what to do. Also when he’s hanging above the water and you see the reflection in the water I feel that’s another place where he’s questioning. In the scenes where he’s with all the men and women, I get to senses. One, he’s going back to what he always says which is gender is not important to him. And the other it kind of represents all of the different people who have pulled and tugged on him since the very beginning whether it be fans and crowd mobs or management? It’s as if he’s trying to break free. And I sense that total freedom with him on the motorcycle riding backwards with his arms to the side and his shirt blowing in the wind. Anyway so many things can be taken from this. Henry often says he never publicly talks about his feelings or his personal life, but he saves his real feelings to put in his songs. Everything he does definitely says some thing. 💚💚💚
@raghadhajomar86943 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of other things he did and still do to show how he really feels sense day 1 and believe me there is still people who think he is straight and attack anyone who say he is not. They say we are "labeling" him while we are literally just saying that he is not straight and they forget that saying he is straight is a label!! Good fact: one of his shows after the lyrics "do u know who u are" he said "I know now" and smiled!!
@Carolina_Girl_3 жыл бұрын
So happy you did this one. Lights up is underrated imo. It’s funny, what you said about the people in the video getting paid to be that close to him. At his Forum one night only show, before they did this song he goes “we’re going to be recreating the mv if anyone wants to volunteer,” ofc jokingly but that whole place came unglued when he said that. The girl standing next to me actually said “omg do you think he’s serious” I’m like yeah, sure he is 🙃. He’s really stayed true to being that person who believes he shouldn’t have to explain his sexuality to anyone, and he’s right, he shouldn’t, it’s no one’s business but he loves teasing us with this sort of thing. Like, he knows by now that we’re smart, we’re gonna figure things out and like you said, he drops these cryptic hints and messages bc he knows the right people will figure it out. That one image you were talking about is him looking at the old Harry or the past him. At one of his secret shows, at the end when everyone was singing/screaming the last lyrics “do you know who you are” he said, with the hugest smile on his face “I do now” and out of all the shows I’ve been to, witnessing that moment was the best and I’ll never forget it bc no matter what it meant technically, it was just nice to see he had found that after 10/11 years. Thanks so much for doing this and thanks to Barbara for suggesting it 💫

I don't get this closetting thing about 1D btw. It's all such a huge myth within the fandom imo, based on how they behave when they were literally kids. It's been many years since there's no band activity, they all changed management/labels, Louis's basically indie now. There is no management allegedly forcing them into closet, why wouldn't they come out? If this vid is Harry's way of "coming out" it doesn't make sense to not adressing the issue 2 months later in the interview. And almost 2 years later after this vid is out, when he literally had more than 3 chances to speak up. He's such a big LGBTQIA+ community ally, if he had anything to say, I guess he would have by now, overcoming personal struggle if he had any, cuz it's for a good deed. I read assumptions about each of the 1D guy sexuality but I just don't see any of it. Not that it mattered to me, though, I love these guys' music regardless of their sexual preferences :)
