One of my biggest mistakes was buying items that are too similar. I'll just end up wearing the "better" one all the time while the other one gathers dust in the back of the closet. An example is jeans with a very similar wash and fit. Or a leather jacket in a similar material and fit. One of the two will fit and look better and I'll regret buying the other.

My best tip to avoid impulse buys you regret is browse when you don't have money. Give yourself a couple of days - a week to think about whatever you want before you can actually buy it. I guess it's kind of the same as making a wishlist, a wishlist just doesn't work as well for me because I'm rarely after specific items. I'm more like "I need a blue sweatshirt" and then I'll just browse for that until I find the one I like most and buy that. Leads in to, don't get too attached to specific pieces. You just gets sad when it's sold out or don't live up to the dreams of how great it would be you had. Figure out what you need for your wardrobe by category and not by specific pieces. For example a blue sweatshirt.. There's probably 100's of nice blue sweatshirts out there. No reason to get overly attached to one. The same with brands. There's a bunch of brands I'd like to own something from, but don't just buy whatever because it's that brand. Figure out what you really want from that brand. And if you don't get the item, it wasn't meant to be. It's just clothes.

I have similar problems-I find that (and this takes a ton of discipline), that as long as something isn’t final sale and you’ll find the time to return an item, it’s OK to purchase first and then make a long-term decision on whether to keep it.

Agree with your point about not getting sucked into buying more by social media. It can be really suffocating when you go on Instagram and see reels and posts from influencers with new clothes all the time. But I think it’s important to remember that a lot of these are clothes are gifted or sponsored ads. I’m in the middle of a big wardrobe clear out myself - change in style and size. Depop is becoming my saviour 😂

@@HarryHas I agree but it also adds to peoples feeling of having to get new clothes all the time, because they see influencers in new clothes all the time. Sitting on purchases really makes a lot of difference. I go for stuff I think I'll appreciate a year from now over stuff that's gonna activate a few more neurons immediately. It makes me buy way less but allows me to buy nicer stuff when I do, and waiting it out gives me time to consider if the purchase is filling a hole in the wardrobe or just an impulse.
@Yoyie42 жыл бұрын
Definitely felt that feeling many, many times. There's something so suffocating seeing so many unworn clothes piling up the wardrobe. I totally agree with what you said. For me one of the mistakes I make is buying clothes that don't fit me entirely. I'm supper skinny and most of the trousers are either too long or too wide. But when they're affordable, I end up buying them just because they're cheap. Also, whenever I go to a store I end up buying something I might not want due to pressure of staff or some other phenomenons. Shopping online is better, even though you cannot try everything on.

Great video Harry as always 👍 I screenshot items of clothing that I fancy at the time so I can come back to them at a later date to see if I still feel the same urge. It is a great tip for saving the penny's. The worst habit I have when buying clothing I love is not wearing them in fear of ruining the item, then eventually going off the piece or finding something els. Terrible habit I know but hard to break.

I've done tip #2 for a long time (even for stuff that is limited availability i.e. supreme drops) and it's always served me well. Usually, if I can agree to wait that long to buy something then I probably don't need/want it. Some solid points there! Personally, I’m lucky enough that I never really feel this way, and having a wardrobe that’s not too big is a huge part of that. I also feel like being picky about what you buy is important. Only buy something if you really like it and you can see yourself wearing it in many different outfits. Also, I really like buying clothing online, trying it on, and then sending it back if I’m not in love with it. In a store things can get rushed and stressful, and you can end up buying something just to not leave empty handed. Try things on in your home, when you have plenty of time, and try to style them with the clothes you already have. I think this is much better than going in and out of fitting rooms.

I learned the hard way not to buy the same thing in different colors. If you suddenly decide you hate the style you basically hate like three pairs of pants all of a sudden and despite the color change, the silhouette is exactly the same. It's basically the fashion equivalent of buying all your furniture from Ikea. I eventually bought three different trousers from three different brands all varying in texture and color and they feel much better than having three of the same thing.

I'm just getting into fashion generally, and i already fall into this category. The problem being ,i shop online since i'm not from the West. So,i always buy many pieces all at once to save shipping cost and i just can't see myself buying one or two pieces at a time it has to be many. But at the end of the day i only like very few of them and the others I just wear once in a while and they mostly in the wardrobe collecting dust. What would be your advice? Considering the shipping fee and the time I'll have to wait to get them here (probably months) do you still think it's affordable to buy one or two pieces at a time? Most of the things available to us locally aren't good quality and over priced and to buy better quality once you'll have to pay like x3 hence I shop online.
