I have "resurrected" several "previously owned" kits and I find it a lot of fun. If I could build kits like you do it would be even better. I enjoy your builds, but I have to say I sometimes have difficulty converting your excellent advice into even close approximations of what you create. If I turn down the lights and squint really hard...maybe, but in the full light of day, nope. This Airfix build is absolutely amazing, well done Sir, well done indeed.

@@HarryHoudiniModels - Ah, yes! I recall that Heller did La Couronne in a smaller scale at one time.

Excellent video. I shall follow this project closely. I have this kit, also a 'rescue pup' but it is I think the 1973 issue (according to the box) and is flash free. The original builder used UHU plastic adhesive (the tube was still in the box) and likewise glued parts mostly separated cleanly with a little gentle persuasion. The wine and cheese lounger was, I think, a frame for repelling boarders. The similarities to the Airfix Wasa are obvious. They produced what turned out to be a reasonably accurate Wasa, a great achievement considering the finer points about the ship were not then known. The lantern turned out to be incorrect, or doesn't feature on the restored vessel in Stockholm, as were some of the decorations on the stern, but all credit to Airfix back then for producing a wonderful range of highly detailed sailing ship kits. I wish they would produce more of them again, but I understand there is probably a very limited market for them.

Repelling Boarders you say... to stop them eating their wine and cheese, right?

Hi Harry, we are both members of the same modelling group on Facebook so you might remember my build of Revell's 1965 kit of Golden Hind. Like you I did the deck planking with individual planks. and many modifications including cloth sails instead of vacformed ones. It would be interesting following your build in its various stages. She reminds me of similar 3rd rater named La Couronne. i look forward to seeing your excellent work. Perhaps as a future project consider Heller's 1/75 La Reale De France.

You may be interested in my Revell Bounty build then. I scratched a lot of it to make it more accurate and made cloth sails as well. Did a ton of rigging on it too. Link on the end of the St Louis video.

I think I made my Saint Louis in 1994, I still have it displayed on top of my bookshelf, and I still have some things that bother me (like the ochre color on the deck). I got me my first airbrush about a month ago and I was considering in painting it again. I think it was the first edition and the moulding was very good, yet I had to make some adjustments.
@HarryHoudiniModels Жыл бұрын
I’ve since made a lot of scratch changes and added a wood veneer deck, plus painted the hull to match the box art. Overall the St Louis a good kit for its age and with some patience can become a great model.

@HarryHoudiniModels3 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear that... but with some patience you might make a go of it. Just joking. Your kit is a rebox of the old 1967 Pyro kit, which wasn’t bad for the day. 1:160 scale, so not as big as my Airfix 1:144, but at least larger than the Heller 1:200 Saint Louis.
@captaincruise87963 жыл бұрын
@@HarryHoudiniModels It’ll suffice. I’d like to ask some of the experts on 17th century Dutch shipbuilding if they think it’s reasonably correct with the lay of the wales and overall lines. Interesting period!
@HarryHoudiniModels3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is a major difference with the moulding on the Pyro/Lindberg kit. If you look at the well known line drawing of the St Louis, and as you say, general Dutch designs of the period, then the Airfix and Heller kits look more accurate. In my opinion.

The grating which goes over the waist of the ship is called a "spar deck". It's a deck made out out of spars, and its function was to protect the gun crews from enemy boarding parties. This feature disappeared by the mid-17th century.

@HarryHoudiniModels9 ай бұрын
The Heller 1:200 Royal Louis is a large late 18th century 100 gun Ship of the line, as I reviewed in my “Fake Ships” video, although the Royal Louis is not fake, however it is not the same as the early 17th century Airfix 1:144 St Louis 70 gun Galleon. Very different shape and size ships from different eras.
