Chorus:
Have you ever watched a moonbeam
As it slid across your windowpane
Or struggled with a bit of rain
Or danced about the weather vane
Or sat along a moving train
And wondered where the train has been?

Many are NOT listening, but I have come to say to hell with them. WE have the memories and the beauty of the music of the 60s-70s... and ever shall. If they can't feel it, that's their problem--and their loss. This man's talent was far greater than any "TV contestant," and his voice and writing style were unsurpassed. If only music wasn't eventually clumped in with all the senseless drivel that constitutes modern-day culture (or lack thereof) and not fallen prey to one-dimensional thinking and a blatant, almost intentional disregard for heart and soul. Just the same, we still feel it, and it feels good. Really good.

I am 64 now..and this is one of those albums. I have worn thru several copies and bought others only to give them away to people who didnt understand... until they had the chance to listen... We lost so much when Harry passed.. in many ways the opposite yet the same person, Harry Chapin... Harry hated to perform, but Chapin loved it.. Chapin was very New York and Nilsson was seemingly California.. Both incredible songwriters/storytellers..

Klaus! He was (before the internet) a person that I would look for in the notes on the album cover when deciding on risking my money on a new artist to listen to. I may have known nothing else about the guy..just that he was smart enough to hire Mr Voorman. Others, too! Like the Tower of Power horn section or Bonnie Bramlett on background vocals. They all rarely let me down, if ever!

have a sleep disorder that gets me up at odd hours. Today is one of those days. I was thinking of growing up as a youth in the Northwest and discovering music. One of the most influential albums was Harry Nilsson - The Moonbeam Song. Every radio station was playing Without You. My older brother and his friends were jamming to Jump into the Fire or the Coconut song. But me as a shy 12 year old loved The Moonbeam Song. Great lyrics make a great song

There are many who think they can sing.......then there's Nilsson. Many, many examples to choose from in his illustrious career, but his pitch here is just a stunner. Not to mention the ethereal background vocals (all Harry). From '67 to '71 he was at the top of the male vocalist mountain and it wasn't close.

The most evocative lyric I've yet, in my life, to encounter: "Or on a fence with bits of crap Around its bottom Blown there by a wind beam" Instantly, I am transported to my youth in Denver - a brisk dusk obscuring a band of boys hopping, with playful abandon, from one neighbor's backyard to the next...
