I can’t say for sure, but I’d be willing to bet it had something to do with budgeting. In the film and television industry, it’s more cost effective to use cover versions in the soundtrack than the original versions.

Have listened to both versions & no offence to Harry Nilsson, but I prefer the Dresage and Slow Shiver version. Harry made a wonderful song, but D & SS just made it 5 times better with the [more pronounced] male/female vocal harmonies & its [more centered] sombre/nostalgic instrumental tones [imo] - but then again my take is likely biased since the BCS version was first one I was exposed to.
