The Porsche Taycan 4S is a pure EV I tested a few weeks ago but would many potential buyers be better served by buying the PHEV Panamera E-Hybrid instead? That's what I investigate in this video..

Is there any evidence that the number and/or severity of RTAs has increased since touch screens started to become commonplace? Same goes for smart motorways. These things often seem bad, but are they always so? I remember when the Lotus Carlton was widely believed to be the most dangerous thing yet devised by mankind. Nowadays, if you had just 380hp you'd keep quiet down at 'Ye Olde Carbe and Camshafte' and hope nobody noticed.

Great video again. As an engineer I often wonder how this sort of car is driven and the wear and tear on the engine before it's warmed up. Starting off in electric, driving from home, getting out of town, then the road opens up and "the beans" are used, thrashing a cold engine isn't good for it. I've not experience a hybrid, so don't know if the car protects itself. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts

@@hpman911 You really think Porsche hasn't thought about it??? My own Volvo XC60 PHEV when driven in pure electric mode circulates the oil in the engine at full pressure, heats up the oil using the auxilary heater, and the oil is 0W20 so it's practically water. I can absolutely guarantee that if Volvo could figure this out 5 years ago, Porsche also has this sorted out. Also if you're like most regular drivers in this country, the engine will very rarely run at all - so the longevity of the engine will be an order or two of magnitude longer than in a regular non-PHEV version.

I've been driving in some of these new Hybrids that have this full eletric mode which is great however theres one little thing that really tingles my mechanical sympathy. The combustion engine only helps when you really want to step on it, but if you do the engine suddenly starts completly cold from 0 rpm to a very high rpm and demanding regime, can't this be damaging to the engine overtime? Or what have they engineered so these engines are made to rev high from the start?

sure, like every other PHEV, same deal with a 2015 Golf GTE, thing is over the life time of the car the engine still has an easier life, no idling - minimal low output operation. Of course if you're going to gun it, then get the engine running a bit before and give it an easier time.

Exactly what I was about to type. As someone who used the oil temp gauge on my GTI Golf MK1 as a reference and not the water temp gauge. You can get in this, drive far enough to forget the ic engine is cold and suddenly decide to be a hooligan and light up the poor petrol engine to 6k plus. Just another way car manufacturers will reduce rage life of our cars...like 30k first oil change on my Transit Sport...Nooo changed the oil at 6,000 and every 10 since.

Porsche PHEVs would always start the engine if ambient temperature is below 0 C. In addition, when the engine first kicks in, it will keep running until it's in the normal operating window. In effect, unless you always start the engine with very hard acceleration, it's not that different to normal cold start.
@AdamDUrso
@AdamDUrso 3 жыл бұрын
@@davewilshere I imagine the engine is warmed through though when it's gunning it - there are heat exchangers between the batteries and the engine oil/coolant - so it's not going flat out from totally cold as it were. Plus I'm sure the engine has been engineered with the particular usage profile in mind!

Thought exact the same thing when Harry floored it. But I think is up to the driver to control the driving mode and put some heat to engine in the first few miles. Otherwise would be just too violent for a cold engine to be reved like that.

I have to say I think the lines of the Taycan are better both in standard and Sport Turismo. The build on both is astonishing. I chose the Taycan and I was doing around 400 miles a weeks and some long journeys and when you know where the charging point are it is never an issue. You soon forget about the engine. If you want amazing engine sound and you can afford one of these cars, you could also ways have a 911 GT3 or a Caymen/Boxter GTS for weekend. Most of these cars are bought through the company so the tax advantage is the key. Hence the Taycan is the bests selling Porsche today. Great Video though Harry and love your style and reviews. Total respect for all you do! Thanks!

Harry, you make some good points. However, I think the answer is highly dependent on use case. I personally use a Tesla as my daily driver. I can charge at home and have no issues doing days of close to 200 miles without recharging. I’m far more efficient than any hybrid. And I really worry in a hybrid with the engine constantly cutting into life and going to hard throttle when stone cold. We do have a diesel SUV with 600 miles plus range when we road trip though. And there are plenty of Superchargers where I love and road trip that it’s not a problem finding charging. I recognize that not everyone has this luxury. I would posit that the plug in hybrid is far less stressful to live with....until you get used to owning a true long range EV. Once you do, the anxiety subsides and you discover it’s not as bad as you think. Thanks for the great content and the thought provoking question.
@billandyeng

Most of the Taycan sold in the UK are company cars. You don’t get the same BIK tax relief with PHEV. As a personal car, PHEV no longer has any tax advantage over normal petrol cars. Both are taxed on value, both are liable for CC and exempt for ULEZ. For the price of a Panamera 4S E-Hybrid, I could buy a 718 GTS 4.0 and a Renault Zoe / Honda E / Nissan Leaf.

Toucan or Panama I really don't care because neither would fit the bill for me. However what I find interesting is that Harry has always been consistent on the whole EV/ICE thing and I can remember his excellent videos on both the Jaguar iPace and the electric mini, the technology may be undercooked for EVs currently but the supporting infrastructure most certainly is. The amusing thing about EVs is that apart from a handful of mainly city driving aimed models, the majority of them are way too expensive to such an extent that if you are paying the best part of £40k for something pretty bog standard, it is far less of a stretch to buy something "exotic" which is quite odd really.

Harry I have a BMW 330e and it’s taken me a while to get my head around the ‘MPG’. I think the reading on the dashboard ignores the impact of electricity consumption. Thus while your 50 mile trip might say 60mpg, that doesn’t take into account the 17kw or electricity used as well, and the electricity isn’t free. Therefore, I honestly haven’t been able to easily understand if the costs are that much lower than a diesel.

Once you've lived with an EV (I went from two C63s then an E63 to a Model S), I don't really want all the nonsense that comes with IC (starter motors, gearshifts, SLOW and noisy). Really not interested in going to petrol stations either. It's a very different motoring life with an EV (waking up to a full tank and a warm car!) but I have no interest in going back to ICE for my daily (still have ICE classic bikes and cars of course but not for the daily). I think all ICE cars seem like classics after EVs. Controversial opinion I realise but there you go. I agree with you Harry, that dailies will be EV and classics will remain ICE as per your classics/2030 video. I think that's spot on.

I wish they had kept the Panamera sized like the 1st gen; the Panamera used to be more of a 5-series sized machine competing in a 7-series class, which added to its sporty character; now it's just as big as an S-class or 7-series and that takes something away from the Panamera in the market IMO. He said he would not go back to the Panamera and he has two of them now (first one was a diesel). Also large wheels on the panamera make an awful noise when turning the wheels when stationary.

I agree. Pure electric re range and re charging still concerns me. From my home in Abergavenny I would drive to e.g. North Wales, or Lake District, or Scotland, or Northern France via tunnel or ferry. I still perceive full electric as an issue for long journeys. On times I have driven 500 miles per day in rural places. Don't really want to identify charging station, wait to charge. In the case of Taycan, it's a beautiful car, but I'd have one eye on the range and the range is only quoted as 253 miles. For brisk motorway driving the Taycan could be out of juice in 3 hours or less on motorway, not very good (for me)

What about warming the V6 up before instantly going to a wide open throttle having been only driving on electric for the start?

Nice summary. However you never mention that Taycan doesn't need any usual service including changing all kind of fluids and oils, all rubber hoses, brakes and so on. It would be more easy to own. 20 minutes charging time to 80% is impressive. And will actually be enough for most people. Don't you think so?

Very nice car, but my X5 45e is even more practical. On a 552 km trip in Norway this Christmas with average speed 87 km/hr, average consumption was 7,5 litre/100km. I drive fully electric on a daily basis.

No - I'm going to offer a contrary view. The big touchscreen was the thing I worried about most when buying a Tesla Model 3, but it's been no problem. All the stuff that's tricky to do, like the mirrors adjustment, you should be doing whilst stationary anyway. Other stuff is either just as easy as buttons, or has a button (there are two scroll wheel / buttons on the steering wheel), or has a voice command that works well. Even the much maligned windscreen wipers have a physical button you can tap to make it wipe the windscreen, or a push to make it wash/wipe. I've gone from being worried about it to a complete change around - I would not buy a new vehicle that didn't have a large, landscape-orientated central touchscreen. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

I'd rather something with more electric and less petrol - like the range-extender motor idea. Basically a pure electric car but with an on-board emergency generator. If the rumours of Mazda making a little rotary suited to the task are true, that could be a real neat solution.

The Panemera in my country for this specific model is more than 100K £ more than the regular 4S taycan. The taycan Turbo S can actually be had for less than the car in question 😅

I eventually found out the reason for the vent controls being on the touch screen. It is to satisfy the needs of the Chinese market where cars in this class are largely chauffeur driven and the owner controls the vents from a screen in the back (an optional extra of course). Needless to say, I agree with those that have commented about how dangerous the touch screen controls pandemic has become. Time was when motoring journalists would pan a car for having look-alike & feel-alike switches etc. Time they started doing this again.

I love the Taycan, but I’m in California where charging infrastructure is plentiful. I realize that’s not the case yet for the UK so I understand the uneasiness of taking the plunge to pure electric. That being said, only one set of propulsion systems is always a better thing for reduced complexity. The Taycan Sport Tourismo is coming soon.

Silent zero-emissions local commuting/good neighbour mode plus strong performance and the range of a petrol car... yeah, it's a compromise, but less of one than the Taycan.

Harry: Love the videos. Do you think that, with all this tech, these cars will be basically totaled by repair costs in 10 years or so (much like the Mercedes S and CL classes of 10 years ago)? ie so expensive to fix that it's just not worth fixing?? I fear what the future of the used-car market will look like due to all of the fancy bits these days. I love my 2004 911.... it's a great car with just the basics. Would love to hear your thoughts on what the future used-car market will look like.

Like many others i also wonder about the revving of a cold engine, but also what about cooling down the engine and turbo(s)? If it just drops dead the second you let go off the gas there's no oil going through the turbo (unless they have separate electrical pumps) which would burn the bearings quite fast.

I don't get these expensive hybrids. The only thing they save is fuel but if I can drop 100K on a car why would I be worried about cost of fuel? If I'm concerned about the environment I'd get a Taycan (If I did the miles to warrent it). I'd love to see a Taycan Turismo.

One thing worries me,....you start off on a cold, frosty morning and bowl along on electric power..then comes a need to overtake something and the poor engine fires up and revs straight to 5000rpm whilst stone cold...just what does that do for engine life?? I like this car...but it suffers tremendous depreciation so best bought at 50% of list when 18 months old...then it makes more sense. 🧐🧐😃😃😃

A likely problem for all buyers of pure electric cars will be the impact on used values of the greater driving range of newer EVs as battery and motor technology advance. I might lease an EV, but I don't think I'd buy one.

Had one of these, just replaced it with a turbo S Taycan. Except the range, the Taycan wins hands down for me. My conclusion was like Harry’s on the Panamera at first but then I got really bored of it. It’s just not exciting to drive. You can drive it fast but you have to press various buttons and get not enough reward, frankly, the car encourages you to drive very slowly. It is a comfortable cruiser that tries to get you to fall asleep rather than excite you. That’s not a Porsche for me. The Taycan has one power source, drives like a sports car (I have some really good ones, so I know) and is a much better car for mixing practicality and fun. The only journey the Pan is better for is a ski trip to the alps or something like that. Otherwise choose the Taycan. Not for saving the planet, because EVs are a bit of a dud in that respect, but because it is the better car most of the time.
