In this series of Screen Gems takes, former president Harry S. Truman discusses and justifies use of the atomic bomb. He states “It stopped the war.” These takes are variations on the same theme. He tells the story of speaking with college students at the University of Wisconsin. A young woman asked his opinion on birth control. Later, a young man asked about total war. Mr. Truman responded that, in an age of nuclear weapons, a total war would mean that the young woman would not have to worry about birth control. He also tells the story of a dangerous intersection in Jackson County, that it was so dangerous that it's safe. He also recalls the old saying, "nobody throws a stick at an empty fruit tree." Several of the takes are the same, but use different camera angles.
This item is from the Screen Gems Collection. The Screen Gems Collection consists of outtakes created during the production of the film series, "Decision: The Conflicts of Harry S. Truman" which aired on television in 1964 and 1965. This item is in the public domain. Please credit: Screen Gems Collection, Harry S. Truman Library.
