Way too heavy. These pods are built to withstand serious impact with the sinking vessel and/or rocky shorelines and are weighted on the bottom to be self-righting.

The way radar reflectors work is pretty neat Imagine a 2D scenario where you have 2 orthogonal mirrors and a laser. Since angle of incidence = angle of reflection, and the two mirrors are 90° from each other, the laser leaves this reflector with the exact angle it entered it. If you add a 3rd orthogonal mirror, the reflector now works for any incident angle in 3D space. Assuming theres enough signal to bounce off atleast 2 mirrors, you'll reflect that signal directly back to whatever generated it. The end result is that the radar operator sees a much louder return than what your vessel would naturally reflect.

I was involved in COASST (Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team) for a few years when I lived in Olympia, Washington. I did the marine debris part of the surveys. I just found your videos and they remind me of how much I miss doing that. I wish I was closer. I would like to start up a COASST program here in Texas.

I haven't done much beachcombing by the ocean, but I've done a lot around fresh water lakes. There's a lake near me that's a popular hunting spot for duck hunters, because it has places along the shore that hunters without boats can walk to and set up. I usually walk the north shore that's pretty barren because it's low and floods easily. But, I usually find lots of duck decoys that came untied and floated out of reach of those hunters without boats. I also find quite a few floating fishing lures washed up there as well. Of course there's always an occasional life preserver, boat cushion or Styrofoam life ring. I've even found a few boats washed up there after a bad storm and was able to return them to their owners through the Parks and Wildlife department.

I do the same here in middle Tennessee. Wish u could go beach combing but I guess the rivers and creeks will have to do for now. I grew up on the river and every winter I would comb the banks for lures, decoys, old unopened beer cans and whatever else was out there haha

She sank and all three crew members on board were saved ona similar fishing boat called the Hillary , they never entered fhe rescue boat. It likely was freed from deck when they took on water that’s why it washed up on shore . As far as towing it or taking it it prob has 1000 pound of lead ballast to keep 4 persons up right prob more . It’s also lodged in sand . And marked by coast guard so re sell is silly . Cheers awsome find !!

The reflector thing reflets both light and radio waves back at 90 deg no matter where it comes from. You see them on boats so it's easier to get a location on it... I think!
@Omegajet223

It's a radar reflector, designed to increase the radar cross section of any small vessel, especially GRP or plastic vessels which naturally absorb a large portion of the radar signal.
@UguysRnuts
@UguysRnuts 8 ай бұрын
Wrong about reflecting "back at 90 deg(rees)". It is designed to reflect in all directions, but most importantly 180 degrees back towards a radar transponder/receiver. The silver metallic coating is to reflect radar, not light. The greyish silver 3"x18" rectangles on the sides and top of the pod are for reflecting light.
@lav25og83
@lav25og83 9 ай бұрын
The reflectors are radar reflectors so radar has a good return and can see you. Sailboats have them because they have a very low radar return. Those things light up on a screen. They put them on weather balloons too.

That little survival pod and the contents cost a small fortune when it was bought as safety equipment for its mothership. No wonder the company/fisherman wanted it back even though he lost his boat. You could claim it as salvage. The insurance company could try to contest the claim, since they probably paid off the fisherman already and now "own" the boat, equipment, etc. loss claim they paid off for. Doesn't seem to me like the company/owner of the mothership has much of a legal claim to it at all. But, even if he gets it back, getting it re-equipped, tested and recertified ain't gonna' be very cheap either. Great beach find, though. I wonder who got there before you and grabbed the stuff you found on the beach? Moreso, I wonder why they collected it only to leave it where you found it.

The boat owner's family contacted us and said they were looking for the pod after the shrimp boat sank. Nobody was hurt in the sinking. We have them the lat. long. of the pod, so hopefully they can recover it. Thanks! Jace

It would be swamped by it's wake as it tried to climb over it's own bow wave. What is not visible are two external metal keels buried a foot into the sand.
