So sad that the only remaining 19th century building left isn’t landmarked. Those older structures on the print all had architectural character as opposed to the boxes they later put up.Thanks for thoroughly explaining each era and showing the dramatic changes this one block went through.

The fascinating aspect of this video is how powerful G. Fox was as a company...to be able to buy-out Brown Thompson's real estate, allow the store to run independently and then afford to move their huge building a couple of hundred feet south to allow G.Fox to add to their store in two later phases, decades apart. Few stores had such foresight or such resources, especially around the depression era. The civil engineering aspect of moving the B-T addition alone is worthy of its own story being told. What were the economics that underpinned the decision to just move a 9-10 story building rather than just tear it down and relocate it? I would imagine at that time...given that the depression was still around...it made more sense to just keep things as much as they were ....and let B-T operate as normally as possible...and still allow G.Fox room to expand...which then helped Hartford with growth and jobs when people needed them.
