I was there with my brother and my parents. I was 14. I'm 39 today and live in Southern California...and I still remember walking into the civic center and seeing "Thanks For The Memories" painted under the ice and feeling so sad. I will never forget the last 2 years when Karmanos was toying with the emotions of the fans. When he said he'd keep the team in Hartford and build a new arena if they sold 10,000+ season tickets for the 96-97 season, and THEY DID! My family was one of the families that came in and bought 4 season tickets that season... and he still took The Whalers from us. Because of this, I still hate Karmanos, and I still root against the Hurricanes to this day. Our Whalers were stolen from us. I still bleed green in 2022!

Mason Grace Things could be worse, at least you have a minor league hockey team, Baltimore has no hockey. I've e-mailed Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake that the 53 year old Royal Farms (formerly Baltimore) needs to be replaced, and all she says is it needs upgrades, you can't keep upgrading a arena that old. They had a couple of Caps exhibition games here and the ice was terrible. I support rebuilding the Convention Center site with an 18,000 seat facility attached to it. If they don't the only indoor sports team will be the Baltimore Blast indoor soccer team. About funding I suggest they use the lottery like we did for both stadiums at Camden Yards. Most fans up there just root for the Caps. I'm rooting for NHL expansion because the minors will too.

I wish you good luck that you are right. Tbh, it's not that likely as there are more promising candidates (Quebec, Houston), but then again, relocations are often surprising. Who would have thought that the Jets would come back before they suddenly did so in 2011? Let's not give up hope that the same thing will happen with the Whalers and Nordiques one day - teams like these are the real NHL to me, not such unnecessary, unwanted, unloved southern states atrocities as Arizona, Florida, Carolina or Las Vegas.

@@magpiemaniac Yeah, sad but true. As much as I'd love to see Hartford make an NHL comeback, it's obvious why they were moved back then. Habs fan here. Even though our teams were rivals,I miss them- and, after this video,I dare say I miss them more than the Nordiques. Living on Long Island,we would get Whalers games on SportsChannel America, and later NewSport, during the 90s. I remember watching so many games, and just being so happy to see a game. I even went to their first game at Madison Square Garden as the Carolina Hurricanes, and there were lots of Whalers jerseys in the crowd (the Rangers won,4-2). I can't imagine losing my favorite team, and you could see the emotions on the faces of so many fans. It wasn't right, and probably the only time I'll ever agree with Jack Edwards is that Carolina shouldn't wear the Hartford colors, not even as a Reverse Retro. My favorite Whalers look, though, was their last look, from 1992-97,and I'd love to find their dark blue jersey. You guys survived as long as you could, what with having to pay the Bruins, Rangers and Islanders. Thank goodness we have videos like this to keep the memories alive. Long live the Whalers! 🐋🟢⚪🔵

Hang in there Hartford. Winnipeg got their team back after 15 years, when everyone said that was never anything more than a mere pipe dream until the day it actually, finally happened. Quebec getting the Nordiques back will also soon be on the way too I'm sure. It'll be worth the wait, no matter how long it takes!

Sadly Quebec didn't get the Nordiques back this time because that weasel Gary Bettman is so hellbent on placing teams in the desert where they don't belong. I hope it fails just like the Coyotes have been failing.

@@sjdrifter72 But I should say that I am glad Seattle did get eventually a well deserved hockey team, after losing the Supersonics. That of which was the best possible U.S. market to get a new team. Hopefully Quebec is next, even if it would be great if Hartford does indeed return one day, as increasingly unlikely as that's becoming unfortunately though. I wonder if there's possibly any extensive videos, and/or photos of the old mall which used to be attached to the Civic Center anywhere too?

As a Sabres fan...I loved when the Sabres and the Whalers played each other. I remember being at a game at the old "Aud", watching Howe and Hull playing together on the same team. One thing the NHL will never be accused of is proper thinking behind the moving of franchises. To make a mistake by putting an NHL team in Atlanta, having to move it, and bringing another one back to Atlanta only to have that one fail. Another example of the NHL thinking they can get rich by expanding the league south.

I am from SC. I love hockey. My favorite team was Hartford. My first live game was at the Civic Center in 1992--Hartford vs Los Angeles. Kay Whitmore got the shutout on Gretzky, Coffey, Kurri, et al. Zarley Zalapski scored twice for the Whale. I will never forget it. I saw them one more time the following year. When they moved to Carolina, I wasn't happy. I hate the Carolina Hurricanes. Now I am a dedicated Bruins fan--but should the Whale ever return, so shall I.

Now that we already have the Jets back, the next step should be to reintroduce the Whalers and Nordiques as well. Teams like these are the real NHL to me - and not such unnecessary, unwanted, unasked for Southern States atrocities as Arizona, Carolina, Florida or Las Vegas.

It goes to show how better off the south has done compared to shit shows such as the way Hartford treated the whalers.

Seattle already has well-supported NFL, MLB and MLS franchises and is still struggling to get the Sonics back. Who needs an NHL franchise there? A Sonics comeback would certainly generate more interest. Hartford on the other hand never had another Big Four franchise, so a Whalers comeback would certainly boost the city's economy.

Whenever a city loses a franchise it HURTS! I grew up in a city that didn't have a NHL franchise. We had a AHL, IHL, or whatever acronym was used at the time. We had/have the Milwaukee Admirals, so we rarely got to see regular season 🏒🥅Hockey🥅🏒 games on 📺TV📺 so this is a bittersweet game. I used to collect the NHL Hockey team magnets ad well as the NBA, NFL, & MLB. I love watching sports. Whether it's again the NFL, MLB, NBA, or NHL I enjoy spending 2-10 hours of televised sports. But again back the issue at hand, losing a team. Back in Milwaukee during the late 50's we lost the Milwaukee Braves to Atlanta. I wasn't born yet, but in the later part of the 80's and early to mid 90's we almost lost the Brewers as well. Same happened with the Bucks. The reason? A new stadium. People didn't want to have to "pay" for the teams new ballpark or new stadiums. I don't know why the Hartford Whalers left their city, but whatever the reason? Whenever a team either leaves or there is a "threat" or possibility that the team could leave, I personally was scared! I COULD NEVER EVER THINK THAT IT COULD HAPPEN. Losing a professional sports franchise, whatever League or sport it is, well it SUCKS! Again we didn't have a NHL franchise here so I adopted a team or three...lol. I loved Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Patrick Roy, Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, and some other iconic players who made the NHL a intense game to watch! As a younger boy I loved a team's logo and/or their jerseys and colors. I liked the Whalers look. It pi$$es me off when a city loses their team! It seems as if greed and money always seems to be the biggest contributing factor to them leaving or their moving to another city. A promise of a new State of the Art 🏟Stadium🏟, and I'm sure major perks for the owner? Again, greed seems to be the biggest motivational aspect involved whenever this happens and it never ever takes the fans into any consideration. The fans, who are the backbone of the league. I am sorry the🐋🐳Whalers🐳🐋 left Harford! The fans deserve more consideration and more input!
