Okay but can we please appreciate how Rin is practically not even in this movie and yet the entire conflict centers around Haru not wanting to participate in any team event *because Rin is not there* 😭 THESE TWO I SWEAR. And remember, *Rin was only in Haru's life for only three months or so,* a semester of elementary school. *This is the power of Rin Matsuoka in Haru's life.* 🥺💜 The reactions and dynamic they produce in each other truly is incomparable 🌸

I literally cannot understand how anyone could watch this movie and see makoharu over it, like.. yes that pool scene was cute but it only proved that makoto allegedly liked haru, it did'nt look like haru reciprocated at all, considering the whole conflict is how haru misses rin so much that he hallucinates some other kid for rin and being all angsty and lonely ( even with makoto and nagisa there). He missed RIN, the impact that rin left on haru is HUGE. I mean just look at him reading that letter with sparkly eyes and thinking that he wants to be like Rin too( with romantic music playing in the background).

I appreciate Makoto's friendship with Haru and what they mean to each other...but yeahhhh, the MakoHaru pool scene was sweet and I'm sure very special for MH shippers, but like you said: *it only proved Makoto's feelings for Haru,* and also that Haru was touched that Makoto felt that way. It solidified the mended friendship. But even with this, Haru doesn't reciprocate the same kind of enthusiasm for Makoto that Makoto has for him. *It's while reading Rin's letter-it's while Haru reads that Rin wants to be like him-do we see Haru show the same level of enthusiasm and feelings for someone that they have for him.* And this is shown so many times throughout the entirety of the Free! series: Haru and Rin both have mutual and reciprocated strength in feelings for each other.

yeah def, Also both haru and rin are shipbaited with a bunch of people like makoto, souske, Ikuya and all. But in case of haru and Rin the imagery is mutually romantic like standing under cherry blossoms with a white background, walking towards each other inside a sparkly pool, not to mention the sensing each other from countries apart scene. I think both souske and makoto have crushes on haru and rin but souske has probably gotten over it since he's saying things like, "You have such a nice face when you talk about him" " I can see why you're so taken with him" Makoto is an amazing friend but it often feels like he gives more than he takes( esp with haru, their dynamic is'nt exactly equal). But Rin and haru inspire and drive each other to grow and change and in the end it's THEM who gets in the national team together. Its their relationship which drives the plot forward so their bond just feels really special.

@@Pallavi_here yes! *"Imagery is mutually romantic"* that's so key. It the reciprocity in feelings for each other that seal the deal for me. I've had friends try to push guy friends onto me just because they liked me, but I didn't reciprocate the feelings, and tbh it's NOT fun. That's prob a reason why I just can't get on board with MakoHaru as anything other than friends because imo, Haru just does _not_ feel the same way towards Makoto that Makoto is hinted at feeling towards Haru. I came into watching Free! blind, so I had no idea about any ships and tbh wasn't expecting to ship anyone. And throughout S1, I couldn't help but feel like Makoto's feelings towards Haru-whether romantic or platonic-were unrequited, like he gave too much for what he got in return. But when it came to RinHaru, Haru was so obviously preoccupied with everything Rin and vice versa. I agree, like Sousuke doesn't come across as "too eager" for Rin's affections (while Makoto to me does); he's pretty chill about it all. And that's one reason why I'm drawn to SouRin's friendship more than MakoHaru's (plus, SouRin just has more chemistry and is fun to watch interact). I'm all for a caring, attentive guy, but sometimes Makoto comes across as a little smothering to me. Haru is obviously fine with it and they are indeed really good friends, but for me, it puts me off shipping them. More importantly, I just don't see Haru feeling anything for Makoto other than a close friend, especially when we see just how viscerally he acts and reacts when it comes to Rin. And yes! Utsumi herself said that Haru and Rin are the core axis of Free!'s story-the whole reason the story exists is because of Rin's continual impact on Haru's life. I can only see Sourin and Makoharu as one-sided at best. For me it's clear that Harurin is supposed to be. I see the friendship between Makoharu and Sourin more as brothers (or one-sided romantically). I think the few interactions Soumako have are cute though. Sousuke basically asked Makoto out for dinner. I like to think that Sousuke and Makoto had unrequited feelings for their best friends but then found each other.

man, the way haru thinks of rin and then says "was i lonely too?" to himself like he's JUST realised he'd been withdrawn because rin isn't there with him is so.. ouch. the fact that he realises this and then later beats rin in a race and thinks he's the reason rin quits swimming for a while..? somebody drown me 😭

Actually I think he means it in a different sense. 'was I lonely (back then), too?' Back when he didn't know Rin and only swam free and talked to nobody but Makoto. He didn't realize it then, but he was lonely. Rin showed him what it could be like to interact more with people, and for the first time in his life, the world kept expanding and filling the loneliness he didn't even realize he held within. Rin really was the one to bring Haruka out of his shell, to fill the void. The impact of their meeting and friendship is just so incredible, and it goes both ways, Haru not even knowing how much Rin thought of him. I really don't know how people can see Haru with anyone but Rin, when it's so painfully obvious they yearn for each other and make each other complete. Ahhh, sweet boys!

LoL poor poor Haru. Got hooked line n sinker cuz he is good in swimming, then left behind out of the blue. Tried to forget, got hooked by letter. Tried to swim fairly (cuz he is good) Rin cried due to personal problems and traumatized him till he stops swimming. Found Rin again, found out he is in separated school n got a rival. Tried to lose in hope that Rin felt better, got told off. Really lost, Rin said well see ya loser. Tried to chase after the same dream to swim together, got discouraged and told off again cuz he got overwhelmed by everyone’s expectations while he just wanna do it for the sake of doing it with his pals. Tried again, he had to let Rin and friends go, his motivation cuz graduation is enemy of all hs anime. Last but not least, felt abandoned by Rin again when he wanted his support in the same pool of water. Poor boy must feel like Rin is a scum that played his virgin heart. But then again he shouldn’t have taken the other’s whims too personally and still ended up as a heartbroken simp. Such a depressing dolphin.

Haru loves Rin 😢 His eyes at 10:16... 😢💙❤️ The poor boy's heart was broken for four years after Rin said he was going to quit swimming a few months after this (according to the novelization, Haru went to buy a good luck charm for Rin before they met at the railroad tracks 😢). I'm so relieved that they made up 💙❤️

I watched this compilation a year ago, and i came back to this after watching the Final Stroke movie. I always shipped RinHaru and i clearly remember the whole letter thing and many other things not included in this, and was always wondering why would people choose MakoHaru or SouRin, since to me those ships always felt like BFF or even siblings, too close and supportive of eachother to actually be romantic partners. The whole Free! franchise basically revolves around Rin and Haru and their connection and/or lack of it. The ones who watched the last movie know what i'm talking about...it all comes down to Rin and Haru. P.S. I respect all of your ships. Don't come after me lol. 😅

even tho i watch all cd's movies and episodes of this , my mind still choose MakoHaru over anything , i do also respect RinHaru, but what made me strongly approved of MakoHaru is the way Haru cant live without Makoto, like hes the air that he needs to keep going ,as to went the length of staying to tokyo ,what he did to Rin, like losing composure, he also did those to Makoto and even broke down when Makoto brought up the news of going to Tokyo, ik hes just confused to whys he hadn't come up what he wanted in his future but to literally stayed on Makoto's side? depicts how he cant live without his presence, i only see rin as someone like Haru, like theyre the two sides of a coin, rin gave impact to haru's life cuz for me , i think he finally found his other par in a sense of swimming and water, Mako introduced swimming to Haru and Rin enhanced Haru's potential of becoming a good athlete swimmer, both these guys are amazing to Haru's life and with the recent art of final stroke, i finally confirmed how precious and important Makoto to Haru's as to putting his very first pro athlete medal to Makoto's ,pure bliss and contentment that Haru acknowledged Makoto's all along 😌

@@Fabbiiii I totally get it, believe me. The potential for MakoHaru was always there and was always very strong. I think the whole trope childhood friends to lovers is very popular and soo powerful, that it's just hard to not see connection. With that in mind, i can see Makoto clearly having crush and strong feelings for Haru (even the last movie clearly showed that) but i can't say the same for Haru. Maybe because of his personality or something...but i wish they more strongly conveyed Haru's feeling for Makoto, if they choose to make that couple canon. I think the beauty of Free! Is that there is soo much pairings you can choose as your favorite while still finding some sort of 'proof' of their legitimacy 😇. So everyone's valid in their own way.

I’m a hardcore RinHaru shipper. Have been for 6 years 😭 ❤💙but, I don’t dislike makoharhu’s relationship. In fact, I feel really bad for Makoto cause it’s so clear that he’s in a situation of unrequited love. Makoto loves Haru unconditionally, but Haru doesn’t feel the same feelings back since RinHaru is where it’s at and the whole show centers around their relationship and so do the movies. SouRin is Kinda similar to makoharu in terms of unrequited love but I feel like MakoHaru just has more history and Makoto’s unrequited love runs deeper. Either way, RinHaru are meant to be. Maybe Makoto and Souske can date each other 😂 they also deserve a nice relationship with someone who will love them fully.

This is from Free!, though this is High Speed: Starting Days, a side movie that comes around #4 in the sequence. It goes: Free! Iwatobi Swim Club (S1) Free! Eternal Summer (S2) *High Speed! Starting Days* (this film) Free! Take Tour Marks (4 eps relevant to the plot) Free! Dive to the Future (S3) It's totally worth the watch! 😊 I actually got into Free! because of Haikyuu (love your Kenma pfp ❤️). I was so obsessed with Haikyuu so I looked up similar anime and Free! was on the list. They're different though, Free! IS a bit more slice of life/character relationships driven than sports-driven. Still, SO worth it! 😊

Their dynamic together, the way stoic Haru shows so much emotion when it comes to Rin...😩💜 My biaswreckers in Free! are Ikuya and Natsuya Kirishima (they first show up in the High Speed movie and then in the S2 recap movie and S3). Sousuke from S2 is swerving in my lane ngl. Haru actually is at the bottom of my top 5 though I do love him. But Rin...he stole my heart literally within the first minute or so of the very first episode (his elementary school personality is just so 🥺). Anyways! There are lots of characters in this so hopefully you find a bias too :)
