The Romans had many different ways to find out the future. Perhaps the most disgusting involved looking at the entrails, or guts (like the liver), of a sacrificial animal. This was the job of the haruspex, and this practice came to the Romans via the Etruscans, even if the practice itself was widespread throughout the Mediterranean and Near East.

makes sense if you think gods want animals sacrificed to them, that there's writing for you inside them.

They really are a fun and easy video to make, compared to the ~5-10 hours it takes to create a 10 minute video!

And the fact that after sacrifice, there would probably be variability in innards-quality, due to malnutrition and disease in the herd. What else could it be except communications from the gods about future events. Especially is the battle comes out favorable after a high quality liver. Post hoc, ergo propter hoc!

Something really cool I read is that this practice existed until very recently in our modern day. People looked at entrails and birds until 1900 or something. I specifically know that this happened in my Italian region of Sardinia :D
